Can you ever out run a broken heart?

2016 RONE Award Winner - Best Contemporary Sweet
"Vocal Crush" is a great choice to top any to-read list! - InDTale Magazine

Lexi Court spent seven years traveling the world, living the nomadic Broadway life, in an attempt to outrun the broken heart Nick Rivers gave her. Now, there’s nowhere left to go.

When she accepted a position as a high school drama teacher in Las Vegas, Lexi hoped to get over Nick, find a nice guy, and settle down. But what should be a quiet summer gets turned upside down when Lexi's best friend, Taffy, drafts her to be an emergency replacement coach on a televised vocal competition.

Feeling out of her league among the other three celebrity coaches, Lexi fights for the most promising contestants to be on her team. One note from a single voice shatters her summer. Nick unexpectedly auditions and joins Lexi's team. With her vocal crush on him raging as strong as ever, she has nowhere to run from Nick’s dreamy looks or siren voice.

Lexi has no doubt that Nick can win the competition. The question is does he want to win her heart as well or will he damage it beyond repair?

Think television reality show The Voice meets Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

I am a music lover through and through and this book was so much fun to read. If I were a candy addict, this would be my candy crush for sure. But since it's music, it was my musical crush. Yes, I'm having a little play on words for a minute with that fun title. Do you have a vocal crush? Someone you could listen to sing forever? I have several vocal crushes and am constantly finding new ones.

Lexi has one major vocal crush and it is somewhat crushing her life. Crushing her ability to move on. Crushing her ability to make friends. Crushing her ability to feel comfortable being in a certain proximity of said vocal crush. But she's going to let it all go. Start moving on...if that's even possible.

The blurb for this book says to think of The Voice music competition mixed with Jane Austen's Persuasion, and I would completely have to agree. Timing is very important, but also healing and understanding, forgiveness and letting go. So you might be picking up this book thinking it's going to be a fun lighthearted chick-lit story (I'll admit I did), but it's so much more than that. There's a lot of depth to these characters and their personal healing as well as their learning to have a broader perspective.

I loved all the music and music references throughout this book. There were times where I had to pause what I was doing and go search for a song. I loved it! And, the author has added a playlist at the end of the book that includes all the songs she references throughout the book. Sweeeeeet!!!!!!!!! Yes, I'm a total music nerd. I listen to, sing, and play music all the time. It's a constant in my life (very much so like reading is).

Lexi and Nick have a complicated history. One that isn't quite clear at the beginning but the more you read into the story, piece by piece is revealed. Sometimes I was frustrated with Lexi for how she handled situations. Other times I was frustrated with Nick and how he handled situations. So I guess I could say that I had equal parts frustration for these two characters and their lack of communicating and fixing the problems. But if that had been done way back when, we wouldn't have this lovely story. Hence the need for the frustrations. There are some great moments between these two, as well as with some other characters.

So, my recommendation is if you're a music lover, clean romance lover, both like me, grab this and be pulled into this love story with lots of drama, fun and enjoyment.

Content: Clean. Some very mild innuendos, but no sex scenes or anything more than kissing. There are a couple scenes with more sensitive/intense moments, but I thought the author did a great job of being sensitive to those topics and writing about them in more of an advocate sense. There is a scene where a minor character has made mistakes and is suicidal. As well as a couple scenes with that character being emotional, and the author shows the buildup of the character's emotions and insecurities leading to the attempted suicide. All in all, I would definitely say this is a clean read but be aware that the topic of suicide is addressed in this book.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Enjoyed this but there are some very simple continuity errors that should have been picked up by beta readers and editors.

Lexi spent seven years singing and dancing in Broadway musicals as long as they took her far away from Nick Rivers, who broke her heart when he left with just a text message. Then she left it all behind and moved across the country to Las Vegas to be a high school drama teacher. Lexi may have moved far away from NYC, but she hasn't moved on. Nick still has a hold of her heart, which becomes a real problem when her best friend, Taffy, gets her to be a coach on a vocal competition, and Nick is one of the contestants.

I really liked this book--the main characters are real with flaws like being really, really stubborn. Sometimes Lexi drove me crazy--she was upset with the way Nick left things, and anyone with feelings would be, BUT she deleted all his emails, voicemails and text messages without reading or listening to them, and told her friends not to pass on any messages from him, but then was upset because she didn't know why he left like he did!! I did understand her cravings for chocolate when she was upset, and it made me want chocolate every time she and Taffy had brownie sundaes.

Nick is sweet and truly sincere with his efforts to apologize to Lexi, but he also drove me crazy with his lack of communication. There were misunderstandings that could've been avoided if he had just told Lexi he wasn't dating anyone, etc. I hope these two learn to communicate better before they tie the knot. I think his dive into the lagoon to get to Lexi's gondola was quite the attention getter.

I loved Grant! He was perfect as a girl's best guy friend. I loved the brother/sister type of teasing and he was there for her when she had a meltdown and needed to cry or make Nick jealous, which I thought was funny. And any guy who helps paint your house is great in my book.

Because this story takes place during a singing competition, there's a lot of music references, but because Lisa Swinton is awesome she has a playlist at the end of the book.

What a fun little sweet romance. The last book I read was sort of dark and gritty so it was a very pleasant change of pace to read something light and romantic. If you like reality shows, specifically those of the song variety, then you will definitely love this book! This story goes behind the scenes of a Voice type show, Las Vegas style, including all the glitz, glamour, music and drama. I have to admit though, I was kind of rooting for the wrong guy the whole time but I was glad that everyone got his or her happy ending. I loved Lexi and her spunk and even her stubbornness. Grant was, well, adorable. And Nick? What woman doesn't dream of a man with a smooth voice who will sing her a love song every now and then. If you're looking for a clean, well-writien, romance that will keep you turning pages all the way to end, this novel is a great place to start.

Ooh, I really had fun with this one. I was drawn in by the blurb and the title. Lexi is so stubborn, she drove me nuts but I liked her despite it all. I ran the full course of almost every emotion in this book. I was frustrated, I was sad, I was happy, I was feeling those butterflies of anticipation. The emotional dynamics of this book were fantastic. I stayed up waaaaaay too late to finish it. You've been warned.

This is the second novel of Ms. Swinton’s that I’ve read, and it’s the best so far.

Even though this genre is not my favorite, the story is wonderful. It’s sweet, heart tugging, and has a lot of action. I’ve been pretty entertained. This is good work. And the novel moved along smoothly. Not a moment of the reader’s time was wasted.

I was vested in all of the relationships between all the characters, especially the friendships that Lexi had with Grant, Kari, and Taffy. Great dynamics.

There were moments when I was gasping, moaning, and even cheering. Along with loving and hating. I was all over the place. Very edgy. The author really gets into the MC’s head. Which I loved! I love inner turmoil rolling around in a character and love being able to experience it as the reader.

The main character, Lexi, has shoved some walls up. She’s happy where she is as Miss Independent, so reluctant to change until a few people walk into her life, or rather, walk back into her life. Lexi is a strong person and emotionally charged. At times, she would fall in my eyes, but then redeem herself. So very human that it was easy to connect with her.

As the story progresses, Lexi becomes more fiery than I took her for, so fiery, that she’s a bit too stubborn to listen to Nick. Poor Guy.

But the chemistry is Uh-Maz-ing! And I won’t tell you between what characters. Though, more than one pair of characters has chemistry worth drooling over.

Clean, sweet romance

I'm Crushing

This was my first book by Lisa Swinton, and now I'm holding myself back from starting Ring on Her Finger immediately.

Vocal Crush centers on Lexi and Nick, who met each other on Broadway seven years ago. Nick broke Lexi's heart, but has never let him explain his side of the story. Now when she's the coach on a vocal competition TV show, he reenters her life, and finds a spot on her team.

We all know he's going to win her back over, right?

What I really loved about this book, was how I felt like I was there. I could visualize the show, and wanted to know the characters. I wished that Las Vegas Voice was a real show that I could watch.

I ached for Lexi and her heartbreak, and also wanted to yell at her a few times. Yes, she has suffered, but she should have let Nick talk to her.

The romance was sweet, believable, and I loved the way that Nick and Lexi sang together. I now need to download some songs mentioned in this book

Oh my heck. Chapter 16 ruined the story for me. The main characters were ridiculous in my opinion. Especially the reason for them not being together. Wow. Basically the guy left her with a text that said he had to go, that he would explain later, and he loved her. She flies off the handle and blocks him for it. WHY?? Like she NEVER lets him explain because she’s pissed that he left without telling her first. Then spends SEVEN YEARS avoiding him and acting like a bitter shrew. He shows up in person and she STILL won’t let him explain anything. And gets pissed because he dared to date anyone else during these seven years of her going out of her way to avoid him. What the crap? And he wants to marry her after all this and more? Seriously? She treated him like dirt.

This is an emotionally charged story of lost love and redemption. Nick and Lexi met years ago while they were both singing on Broadway. After Nick left her behind in order to further his career, Lexi has shut him out of her life. Now they meet again. She is a judge on a reality singing competition show, and he is a contestant. Lexi struggles to remain professional and keep her emotions at bay, while Nick desperately wants to explain the choice he made. He sees his presence on the show as his last chance at correcting the mistake he made in leaving Lexie. The author has presented their story in a way that channels the raw emotions of the characters, and evokes empathy and compassion.
The interactions with the secondary characters add further depth to Lexi and Nick. Well done, Lisa!

I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

So I really liked Lisa Swinton’s book “Silver Star” and wanted to try a different book by this author as well.
I figured I’d give this one a try because the premise sounded fun by being centered around a type of show like ‘The Voice.’
However, as much as I wanted to love it, I struggled connecting with Lexi. Her personality was too stubborn and angry at times...I think this book would have made a perfect novella because it felt too unnatural to be so resentful at an ex love (who she still loves) and not want to listen to an explanation for 7 years...and then throughout most of the book, too.
Also, there is a section about an attempted suicide, and I just didn’t see how that really added to the story line. It’s such a sad and heavy topic, and felt kind of minimized and randomly thrown in...
I’ll probably try a future book by this author but this one just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Music and reading are my 'go tos' and have been blessed with music education, so enjoy good stories involving music. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and what a fabulous love story intertwined with music and so realistic, too. Love the main characters, Lexi along with her good friends Taffy and Kari along with adorable daughters and Grant, Lexi's new first guy friend. Nick's character was more withdrawn though out, but with reason, and enjoyed how Nick got close with Jake and other team contestants under Lexi. There was plenty of drama, twists and turns making me cry and laugh both through out this great story. Enjoyed it immensely!

Vocal Crush is a truly wonderful book. Lexi and Nick had it all seven years ago until Nick left Lexi heartbroken. Now he's back and this is their story. Set against the backdrop of a Reality TV singing show Vocal Crush has music, drama, action, heartbreak, humour and romance. However, description does not do this book justice, you need to read it for yourself to fully appreciate it. Lisa Swinton has written a brilliant book that will keep you reading until the very last page. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I enjoy Lisa Swinton's writing style; it's easy to read and flows well. The characters are fully developed. I felt along with them. The setting, a Las Vegas singing contest, was interesting. There were fun twists and turns in the story. I was frustrated that Lexi had avoided Nick for seven years, never allowing him to explain his side of what happened. I received an ARC. I chose to write a review and share my opinion.

Las Vegas Love Story
This is a clean, second chance romance that takes place during a Las Vegas Voice competition. The plot is pretty twisted for a romance. There is so much going on that the reader has a hard time keeping up. The characters are totally believable and real. I have read several of this author's books and this is of the same high quality. I received this book for free and voluntarily chose to post my honest review.

I enjoyed reading this story; the only reason I gave it a three was because I don't see cutting someone off with explanation. waiting seven years in turmoil, just too long. I liked the characters they were well-developed with humor and romance; Nick and Lexi had great chemistry. I would still recommend this book.

This was alright, the female mc was too stubborn and annoying.

The book could do with another edit and I wasn't a fan of women being judged by what there wearing. It's ok to want to dress modestly, but it's not ok to shame others for not doing it.

Fantastic read!

This was a fantastic read! I connected with the characters and loved the premise of a vocal competition. There was depth to this story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd rate the romance sweet and clean, PG, for a suicide attempt and thematic violence.

The premise of this story is cute, and it has some really good moments, but ultimately, the characters (and the many situations they get into) just aren’t believable. I did enjoy the music aspect of the story.

So it took me a bit to get into Lexi and her dogged-determination to remain single but I persevered and I'm so glad I did. The Petra twist wasn't exactly a twist and needed a bit more oomph to sell it but the storyline was totally new and fun to read.

I got quickly engrossed in this book for several reasons. The author did a great job with characters, the plot was fun and fast paced, and I wanted to know what happened to Lexi as she was helping with the competition.

Lexi is a great character. I loved that she seemed real and she was not a perfect person by any means. Lexi has run from her old life because of Nick, a man she once loved. She's trying to do everything a normal high school teacher would do and also hide from her past. Which becomes really hard to do when she helps her best friend with the competition and her ex-boyfriend Nick ends up being on her team. I loved the way that she tries so hard to hide from Nick, but he keeps getting shoved into her space, at home, at work, everywhere.

I liked Nick too, I thought he was a gentleman, and a true romantic. It would have been fun to have seen some of the story through his eyes as well.

I liked the plot of this one too. It was fast paced and fun. I loved that there were several places where Nick and Lexi had misunderstandings about who loved who, like when Lexi was helping a friend pick out an engagement ring for his girlfriend and Nick was stalking her, not knowing what she was doing. It made the book that much more fun.

This book is a cute, fun, clean romance that you won't want to put down!

I was disappointed. The premise was good but the execution could have been better.

There are quite a few errors in the book that should have been picked up. Pretty sure some character names changed. I am sure the contract forbade relationships between the mentor and contestants, but then the producer is encouraging them?

Aside from that, all the main characters were annoying.

First, we have Lexi. Stubborn to the point of not being believable. In the course of seven years she never once allows a friend to explain what her ex did? Never reads any of his messages? The emails from his mother? She basically has a seven year tantrum. Such a good friend who essentially threatens to cut off contact with them if they dare mention her ex.

Grant, the good male friend is half Mr Nice Guy and half Mr Slimy Guy (not sure if intentional.) Likes Lexi, but quickly falls for her neighbour, but has to make comments like "he is still a guy, after all" when Lexi isn't wearing a bra. Charming.

Nick, either has the patience of a saint, or needs some help. Even though Lexi treats him terribly, he's still keen to chase her but his actions after the final make him seem crazed and desperate.

The plot has many misunderstanding and miscommunications between the characters. I thought somebody ought to knock their heads together to get some sense going.

This book has a really fun setting. I don't watch music reality shows, but I found myself pulled into the story and the dynamics of the voice competition. It was interesting to see how it all worked backstage and it felt very realistic how it was portrayed.

The main story revolves around Lexi and Nick, who had a relationship seven years prior. Due to some poor choices by Nick, Lexi's unflinching stubbornness, and a lack of communication on both sides, they've been apart and never resolved their issues before. When Lexi finds herself a last-minute judge in the competition and discovers Nick is one of the contestants, they are once again in close proximity and are eventually forced to discuss what happened.

The secondary characters did a good job of adding to the story, but at times I felt that there was too much drama going on, which is probably normal in reality TV and in this type of thematic situation.

3 1/2 starts elevated to 4. It's a clean story with a sweet ending, appropriate to young adult readers.

Very entertaining to read this fun, fast-paced, music reality story. Nick and Lexi were 'stars' in a plot that keeps readers turning the pages with excitement. The character development and swoon were perfect in this clean romance, with personalities that provide just the right amount of intrigue and interest to ensure a read that got me lost in the book - out of my own personal reality!

I especially enjoyed the chemistry between the characters and love how they gave a taste of drama that wasn't too heavy or serious in its contemporary atmosphere, since I expected it at the start. Swinton has once again shown that she is both creative and a visionary when it comes to her talent. I appreciated, more than anything, how I felt so involved in the setting, plot and life of the characters - which is something that is rare in romance novels. Once again, I find myself counting down to another novel from Swinton!

I love the heroine in this book! She's so principled, and so good and knows what she wants. I think she's an excellent role model. I guess I'm surprised she could have let the Big Misunderstanding go on as long as she did (I'm not wired that way), but it makes sense. 4.5 stars loved the chemistry! I'll definitely read more of this new to me writer. I'm so pleased I bought the Kindle version!

I loved this book I couldn't put it down. I loved that Lexi was able to find such a great friend in Grant. It is always good to have someone to vent to. I understand Lexi wanting to run from the pain and not face the reality of what happened and I love that Nick finally manned up and was willing to fight for her. That is what every girl really wants a man to love them and to fight for them. This was a great book. Can't wait for the next one from Lisa so far I've loved them all!
