Sterek
A coming-of-age story.

After killing Peter Hale, Derek and Stiles have to deal with the aftermath: Scott doesn't want to forgive Derek for taking away his chance for the cure, Jackson struggles with adjusting to his newfound powers, and Lydia remains in a coma.

Derek has his own demons to wrestle, and the more time he spends with Stiles, the less sure he is that he'll be able to control himself.

" ... You're young and you're human, and you're going to make mistakes. And you're going to get over those mistakes, just like you have been these past few months. Because you have to. We're not built to stay fixed on the past. If we do, we can get lost."

This is a completed seven part series Sterek. It begins the moment season one ends and the author pens a complete divergence of the series from that point on, however, each installment reads like it could have been (should have been?) a season of Teen Wolf. Imaginative and well plotted. It is what it says it is: A Love Story. In fact, when viewing it as a whole, it is probably one of the sweetest, most tender love stories between Stiles and Derek. But this love story is set against a back drop of gruesome tragedies, and a profound dialogue from both Derek and Stiles provides a sub-commentary on life's inevitable changes, battling evil literally and internally, how relative "right" can be contingent on perspective, and the endless hope that all the curves life throws at you, you don't lose intrinsically who you are. About half of it is told from a self loathing Derek whose mind is in a particularly dark place and half from a morally struggling Stiles, whose coming of age juxtaposes death and life and catalogs his growth from an innocent virgin to being unconditionally in love, from being an unpopular, but light-hearted high school sophomore to being a killer, a protector and a self sacrificing leader.

One of the things that I liked best about this fic, is that it was written from March of 2012 to April of 2012 - which apart from being impressive to have been written in under a month, also means that the author was completely unsullied by season two of Teen Wolf. Meaning that the dark, campy, horror show atmosphere of season one is continued throughout this fic. Revenge, mystery teenage angst, teenage curiosity circle the air. There is a good bit of action in this fic, but I wouldn't say it is "action packed" rather "action plotted", over all it is very well paced. And had the writers of Teen Wolf kept with that atmosphere, I could see the story spun here emerging. As in season one, the characters are kept constantly on edge (with the reader/ viewer).

The whole thing is very well written - in a few of the later installments I noticed some typos, but nothing that bothered the story. The descriptive prose are poetic at times and allowed me to easily visualize the setting. The writer really picked up on the spot on characterizations, inclusive of secondary characters - without having known of the other seasons yet. Particularly Chris Argent, Allison Argent and Danny - who, personality wise, seem to evolve in the same manner the TW writers eventually steered them. There is also a lot of well spun existential contemplation threaded throughout the whole seven parts. Particularly focused on changing and choices and how in some manner we are "X" number of choices away from becoming the monster we are hunting.

Warnings:
Since this appears to have been posted at the start of the fandom, I am not sure if tagging wasn't big or not, but some things I would tag for or give a heads up about.

- there is some graphic, brutal violence in this - detailed gore at times, I will admit to finding some of the images (a particular one that I am trying to get out of my mind) too disturbing for my comfort. It is not so much that they are gross (and a few are), as they are ghastly horrific. The villains that are created in this are particularly sadistic and you will be as eager for a fight as our protagonists.
- A rather major character dies in a very disturbing manner. I can see some people not liking this.
- A few bunnies and a deer meet unfortunate ends.

For those who enjoy season one Derek and atmosphere - where we got a great introduction to truly intriguing characters, this fic runs with those characters and atmosphere and gives us a full alternate from Davis' version of where they could go, while keeping true to foundations season one set.

A bit depressing, really. Not bad at all, just not what I am in the mood for. So now I am off to read something fluffy and funny and cheerful.

Really lovely au, hate what happens to Stiles, love what happens to him at the same time. Beautiful character growth, wonderful pack dynamics, delicious bad guys. And such a fragile bamf Stiles!
