As Crown Prince of the Kalquorian Empire, Dramok Clajak seems to have everything he could possibly want. He lives a life of carefree adventure, with scores of lovers to indulge himself with. Yet he still wishes for what he can’t have: the two men he loves above all others.
Imdiko Egilka has been promised as Clajak’s clanmate for 14 years. The prince is a duty to the elder Egilka, a boy he helped shepherd through his formative years. Yet the boy has become a man, one whose passion and penchant for trouble jolts the Imdiko from his quiet, studious life. Love becomes a possibility ... if Egilka can survive Clajak’s adventures.
Nobek Bevau is not the typical Kalquorian warrior. As a rare dual-breed, he knows Kalquor will never accept him as its eventual monarch. His only choice is to walk away from Clajak and Egilka, the two men who own his fierce but loving heart.
Life and love are a struggle, but real tragedy awaits the three men and the Kalquorian Empire. Unthinkable catastrophe will drive Clajak, Egilka, and Bevau together, forging an unbreakable bond ... or it will tear them apart and destroy the Empire’s leadership.
Born in a small town on the coast of North Carolina to strict parents, Tracy St. John started out as a quiet, shy child. She was typical for her small town: studying hard for good grades, fishing with her dad on Saturdays and attending church on Sundays.
When adolescence kicked in, so did full-on rebellion. School, family and church fell by the wayside as Tracy partied too hard with the wrong people. Somehow surviving her wild-child phase, she pursued several careers before finally settling on video production and writing.
A string of failed relationships prompted her to give up on love…which of course meant fate immediately tossed Mr. Right her way. After only 4 months of dating, she eloped with the love of her life. They just celebrated 14 years of wedded bliss.
Prior to penning her first erotic novel ‘Alien Embrace’, Tracy wrote commercials, television and radio promos, and training films for various government entities.
Tracy St. John now lives in coastal Georgia with her husband and son. She still enjoys fishing, and you’ll often find her haunting train museums with her locomotive-loving son. Besides writing, she also works in video production both in front of and behind the camera. She’s usually cast as the gun-toting bad gal, getting handcuffed in the end. She has no complaints.
Little known Lilia Ford fact: the first M/M title I ever read featured outer space dudes with two cocks. And you know what? That shit just never gets old.
Unfortunately, this book wasn't my cuppa. I like more plot to go along with the sex and this one was lacking in that respect. Which is too bad because I really enjoyed the first book in the series. I will give this series another shot in hopes that this was a one-off.
I'm really loving these "Clan Beginnings" books...which are prequels to the books in St. John's "Clans of Kalquor" series.
Crown Prince Dramok Clajak knows he should get serious about clanning with his long-time mentor, Egilka, but he's having too much fun being the playboy prince to settle down with the introspective Imdiko, and besides, he's not sure that Egilka sees him as anything but a young and impulsive boy. Egilka has guarded his heart from falling too hard for the Prince, but Clajak's playful exuberance wins Egilka over, and soon they've formalized their bond. However, as they begin their clan life together, they come under pressure to clan their third member, but haven't found anyone compatible....at least until they encounter Nobeck Bevau, who is everything that Clajak and Egilka could want. Bevau's reluctant to get too involved with Clan Clajak. He's a rare dual-natured Nobek..one carrying Imdiko traits, and Bevau knows he won't be welcomed by the Imperial Family. However, when tragedy strikes, Clajak and Egilka both realize how much they've come to rely on Bevau's care and support, and are determined to do whatever it takes to win him over.
It's so easy to fall in love with these guys! Clajak's smart and savvy, but doesn't take life too seriously -- there's too much fun waiting out there to get too worried about being a real adult. Poor Clajak -- he has so much going for him, but he's so insecure! When he's forced to confront a terrible reality, his reactions are so very real and profound that you want to cry for him.
Egilka is perfect for Clajak. He's older, but his quiet confidence and calm reserve balance Clajak's playful impulses. Not to be too maudlin about it....he's the wind beneath Clajak's wings. Clajak can soar because he knows that Egilka will catch him if he falls.
Because of his dual nature, Bevau's accustomed to doubts about his ability to defend and protect those he serves. Rather than face eventual rejection, he just keeps from getting too attached...he's willing to have fun, but nothing more. As a result, it's easy to sympathize when Clajak and Egilka mount a full court press to break down the barriers to his heart.
The characters are terrific, the story has compelling emotional impact, and there's enough suspense and action to keep you turning the pages. Oh...and did I mention the incendiary sex? Yes -- lots and lots of torrid, kinky, but oh so fun M/M shenanigans. Best of all...there's just a lot of heart...:)
Of all the Kalquor books, this one was somewhat of a disappointment for me. There was very little plot to the book except the two princes wanting a certain Nobek as clanmate. Other than that, the book was about these three seeing who could get the upper hand on who (sexually) and plotting to get the upper hand. Tracy’s Kalquor books always have a lot of sex but this one was centered around sex as - a Lot of it. As an aside, the model on the front cover depicting (I believe) the Imdiko is perfect. The scowl matches perfectly to what was described in the book - and the model is gorgeous.
IMHO the weakest of the bunch but that's not to say it's not good. It is. The others are just great. Enjoyable - and good to see Clajak getting his clan together.
Ok let me start By saying I have not read all of this authors past books...I only read certain authors in the M/F genre...didn't know anything of this author til I read the 1st book in Clan Beginnings.. then I read each book of the clan finding their Matara...and to be honest the only one out of the 3 I liked was book 3...the other 2 were not good in my opinion...that being said this book.was a little disappointing for me...I felt no real love for real...too much sex not enough emotion...the relationships were just about sex..no real plot like the other 3 books...I don't really want to read the book with the matara but I feel like maybe I' ll get a better feeling for the Clan...This book had some good parts but overall it fell flat...
This was my first m/m book. I thought I woud start it and drop it, but instead, I loved it! I definitely rate it a 5! Now that I have several of these clan beginnings to read, I will go back and read the original stories after their associated clan beginnings stories. I am sure those stories will be enhanced by having read the clan beginnings stories first.
What stands out most vividly in this story is 'love'. Love between clan members and the love the princes have for their Emperor Fathers and Mother. Clajak is trying his best to avoid his responsibilities. He must have both an Imdiko (clan caretaker) and a Nobek (clan protector) before the clan is complete, and before they can clan their promised Matara, Narpok. Neither Clajak nor Ejilka are at all fond of Narpok. They think she is shallow and immature. They also detest her father who heads the Royal Council. Clajak has known since childhood that Ejilka would be his Imdiko. He thinks Ejilka thinks of him only as a spoiled pleasure seeking child. There is some truth to that impression. During this story fate steps in and Clajak is forced to become the mature man his family knows he is capable of being. He must accept his role as Dramok (leader)for his clan and he now needs to learn how to govern all of Kalquor with the help of his clan and his Emeror Fathers.
A large part of the story deals with Clajak and Eljika trying to gain Beveau as their Dramok. And, the game is on. There is sex, love, several tragic and scary parts. The whole makes a wonderful story.
You should get this book if you have read any of the Kalquorian series, especially Jessica's story in Book 2. It really follows this one, and I plan to reread it starting tomorrow! Tracy St. James crafted a detailed story that not only has delicious sex, but several other interesting plot lines to follow. A story I will long remember, treasure, and reread. A great introduction for me to m/m stories.
Really loved this! At first, it seemed lighter than the other stories that I also loved, like Clan and Command and Clan and Conscience, but its difference made it seem more refreshing to me. I could really focus on the development of their relationship with one another.
This also made me cry along with Clajak and the others when that tragedy occurred. Didn't expect that in the middle of my reading. But I guess it's to be expected, it can't all be butterflies and rainbows so it was really a sucker punch to the heart and the tear ducts. 😭❤
I don't know if it's just me but I think their stories are perfect as they are even without finding a Matara.
I think this is my favorite among the Clan Beginnings series!
The first half feels cotton candy sweet when you compare it to the second half. It was probably necessary evil for the empress to die so our dramok prince and his clan would be able to grow individually and as clanmates. I really admire bevau and his love. I don't really agree with the way they made him consent to his place as the crown prince nobek, but hey, all's well that ends well!

I actually enjoy the stories about how the clans came togehter before meeting their Matara. I would recommend reading these before the actual Clan of Calquor series.
Like one of the other reviewers, I laughed and cried. The magic in this series is that, after falling in love with the clan members in the book where they meet the woman of their dreams, you get to go back to the before-time, when the three men first met and fell in love with each other. Yes, it's all gay erotica, and a lot of it, but it doesn't matter even if it's not your usual cup of tea, because you fell in love with these men in the regular Clans of Kalquor series. Frankly, I thought Clajak especially, but also Bevau and Egilka were royal shites when I first met them in "Alien Rule" - though I did fall in love with them by the end of that book, but here in Clan and Crown I started out already in love.
Caveat - do not read this book unless you have first read, "Alien Rule". Unless, of course, gay erotica is your favorite genre.
