'At night when you are sleeping There's a party in your house, It's a pumping, jumping, funky bash When all the lights go out . . .'
When the sun goes down, the Kitchen Disco starts up - and all the fruit in the fruit bowl come out to play. There are lemons who break-dance, tangerines who twirl and some very over-excited apples.
'Kitchen Disco' is a zany and hilarious rhyming picture book for young children, featuring a stunning holographic foil spread in the middle of the book.
"Mummy, this is so funny, does this really happen when I go to bed?" - Josh, aged five
Fun book about disco dancing produce in your kitchen! Bright and bold colors really make the illustrations jump out at you! Fruits and vegetables have a fun time turning the kitchen into a disco! This would be a fun 'party' book to read to small children; maybe at a birthday party where everyone is dancing!
No wonder Josh, aged five, asked his Mummy, "Mummy, this is so funny, does this really happen when I go to bed?" because Clare Foges and Al Murphy's 'Kitchen Disco' is a zany overnight trip around the kitchen when the various fruits bop around to their hearts content!
It's all sweetness and light in the household in the early evening but once those lights go out a pumping, jumping, funky bash begins! The banana is the DJ and as he plays the latest hits, he spins, jumps, somersaults and even does the banana splits!
The other fruits join in the fun; the cheeky coconut dives into the washing up and has a bubble bath, the mango shakes his hips, the pear enjoys the party and the apple wiggles around. They all dance like they don't care!
The tangerines scream and shout as they go bouncey-bounce - one even spins around so much that all her juice comes out -, the cool pineapple, complete with sunglasses, wears his hair in spikes and the grapes are such a silly bunch they boogie in a conga and when all the other fruits join in the conga line gets longer.
The pears, with their big fat bottoms, groove across the floor and the apples wave their stalks around and scream for more, more, MORE! They all dance like they don't care but when breakfast time arrives, the party slows and the fruit must go to bed. So into the fruit bowl they climb to rest their sleepy heads.
So remember when you hear a party going on in the night, don't be shy, go and join in because everyone's invited to join in the fun … and this colourful book is certainly great fun.
Who knew a book about dancing fruit could be so amusing?
That's all this is, really. It's a rhyming picture book about fruit having a party in the kitchen after everyone goes to bed. Each fruit has their own moves, and they all sing a catchy song. Even being found out by the homeowners doesn't stop the party!
The illustrations are colourful and fun, with plenty of different fruits represented (yay for diversity!). I feel it got a little repetitive toward the end (I was reading the e-book version and I actually checked to see how much further I had to go, because it seemed like it was going on forever), but kids will probably enjoy the catchy fruit song and the antics of all the delicious snacks.
This book has a ridiculous title, with a silly cover, and maybe even a crazier story. I was intrigued, though, and in reading through, I laughed, smiled, and enjoyed. I know my students and children will enjoy this book too! Think of Toy Story - kind of - but only in your kitchen when you have a lot of fruit and produce stored in your house! When you're in bed, the fruit and produce like to awake, stretch out, and have a good old disco party.
If that sounds like a fun book to look through, possibly read aloud, or have available on a shelf - this one is for you!
I picked this up in Sainsbury's recently - mainly because myself and my daughter thought the title and cover were funny. It's a great fun book in which all the fruit and vegetables in the kitchen get to do their bit at the kitchen disco, all told in rhyme.
OMG, I immediately love any book with a holographic/glitter paper surprise and Kitchen Disco delivers. Super funny, well rhymed. Good for a read-a-loud.
Kitchen Disco is the Toy Story of kitchen fruits. When you're asleep, the fruits get down and dance, thanks to a DJ Banana who spins Bananarama. This is a colorful book with a fun, catchy song. It's packed with colorful details. One spread includes a flashy flourish -- a disco ball with metallic accent. Wild and fruity fun.
My son's favourite book and I can see this cropping up as an annoying chart song. Visually impressive and lots of little jokes too so it doesn't become annoying for a parent reading the book. Highly recommended.
Illustrations are very cute, but, it just wasn't for me. I didn't like the text much at all and sort of wondered what the point of the book was. It wasn't about healthy eating or anything like that, it was just a weird book in rhyme featuring fruits and vegetables.
I did like the illustrations quite a bit, just felt they were a bit wasted on the text. I know that sounds mean, perhaps I was just in a bad mood when I read it.
A banana DJ that plays Bananarama? Yep. Pears with big butts? Yes. Shake like a Mango- everyone's invited! Yes, this book makes fruit cool so get up and dance --excited! Love this! And it has a website and a song! Cool!
I was given this book for free by the instructor of Talk to Your Baby through BookTrust. Personally, I would not have chosen this book if it was sat on a shelf, but I leave the read of the evening to Baby A.
Baby A may only be 4 months old, but she knows what she wants! When given the choice of Kitchen Disco or a Kipper book, Baby A ended up immediately clawing at Kitchen Disco. It's hardly surprising really; the bright colours and wonderful illustrations make it attractive for young children and it kept her interest throughout, even though she did not understand the story. She kept grabbing the book too, which means it was a 5 star read for her.
So why a 3 star from Mummy? The illustrations are better than the story and that isn't a good sign. I didn't realise it was a song, or even that it was rhyming, until the shaking started and that wasn't until quite far on in the story. That being said; what's the tune?! I think it's more of a rap, so I will be practising my (appalling) rapping skills before this one is read again.
sIs is possible to give this book a 10 star review? I would if I could. It is nothing short of hilarious and amazing. This book captivated my daughter from the very first page. It is sing-songy (which she loves) and it says "shake it like a mango, party like a pear" and my daughter has been walking around shouting to the top of her lungs "SHAKE IT LIKE A MINGO (she thinks it says Flamingo) AND PARTY LIKE A BEAR (she also thinks it says Bear)"....ha! If you just want to have a good laugh, I highly recommend locating this book. As a side note, it would make a GREAT read-aloud for a rowdy, little PreK-1st classroom.
In this comical book, kitchen produce decides to bust a move while you are asleep in your bed. The pineapple, apple, pear, mango, grapes, lemon, and other fruit each have their own personalities in this Kitchen Disco. Near the end, the family wakes up from the party, and decides to join in the Kitchen Disco!
This book was so much fun to read with my ID kiddos. Every time the 'chorus' came on I turned on Justin Timberlake's Sunshine in my Pocket and we boogied for 20 seconds and then came back to the book. The kids loved it.
**4 stars because there were some very weak rhymes in the book - conga with longer - really?
Amusing story about a dance party that happens every night after the humans have gone to sleep. All the fruit dances and play music. Apparently, this is a song which you can listen to and watch on youtube or the books website-but the song doesn't cover the entire book. There is one part that sorta ruins the flow for me when the words conga and longer are expected to rhyme. I'm not surprised that fruit didn't make it into the music video. But overall it is a cute book, a cute song. Kids will enjoy it. If you don't pair it with 'fruit salad salsa' you are wasting an opportunity that doesn't come around often.
This book would make a great read aloud, but the reader has to be willing to loosen up and groove a little! Seriously, the reader will set the tone for whether the kids love this one and wiggle along, or think dancing fruit is the most ridiculous thing they've ever seen. Such potential! The illustrations are great and the tiny twist at the end just adds to the fun. I will definitely be using this one for either a food or movement themed story time. Preschoolers will enjoy it and if you paperclip a few pages together, toddlers can get it on the fun, too!

Good book to use for ks1, it’s highly entertaining and the illustrations are great with different textures and styles. Good talking points for children about fruit to use in health and well-being lessons. Children find this book funny, but I am yet to see any GREAT teaching ideas from it. It’s good, but average!
A really fun, brightly coloured story about what fruit gets up to when we all go to bed. I used it in a semi-guided reading session with two children in a special school. They loved it and it provided lots of opportunity for book talk (including prediction, looking at the pictures, thinking about how they would feel at different moments in the story).
A story of fruit that dances disco while the household is asleep. Cute story, fun illustrations. Might be a bit difficult to read in storytime if you don't have a disco rhythm.
There is an official Faber & Faber YouTube video for this book/song but there is a better version by YouTuber "Wordy."
Love this book, and so do the children! lots of repetition engaging and involving the children in the story time. Really good for reception children, and enables them to learn all of the different types of fruit etc. Would definitely recommend.
