Darlene, alongside her husband Mark, are Senior Pastors of Hope Unlimited Church on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia.
As a songwriter, Darlene is perhaps most famous for the chorus “Shout to the Lord,” a song that is sung by millions of churchgoers every week and has been covered by many other artists. “Shout to the Lord” was nominated as Album of the Year for the 1997 Dove Awards and was nominated as Song of the Year for the 1998 Dove Awards. In 2000 Darlene received a Dove Award nomination for Songwriter of the Year and received the International Award for influence in praise and worship.
In addition to “Shout to the Lord,” Darlene has written many songs that have been published worldwide, which apart from Hillsong Music worship projects also include solo projects : “Kiss of Heaven”, “Extravagant Worship”, “Change Your World”, “Simply Darlene”, “You Are Love” and “Revealing Jesus” a live worship album recorded with Grammy award winning Israel Houghton. Through the Compassionart project 2008, Darlene was honoured to be allowed the privilege of writing with some of the most generous-hearted worship writers and leaders of our day, with the goal to write an album where all the monies raised went to others in less fortunate circumstances. Darlene is also passionate about raising and training other worship pastor, leaders, teams and writers and has written four books – “Extravagant Worship”, “The Kiss of Heaven”, “The Art of Mentoring” and the new “Revealing Jesus” devotional. These titles combined have been translated into over 20 different languages.
Many years ago Mark and Darlene made a life commitment to do whatever they could to bring answer and relief to human suffering, and one of their great joys in life is to work with Compassion International, serving the world’s poorest of the poor children.
It was during a Compassion trip to Central Africa in 2004 that Mark and Darlene were prompted to initiate Hope: Rwanda, a global endeavour designed to bring hope to a nation seemingly forgotten since the horrific genocide of 1994. The 100 Days of Hope (April 6 – July 15, 2006) project was strategically coordinated to cover the same 100 days that saw approximately 1 million people viciously slaughtered. Now HOPE: Global continues to bring hope and healing to Rwanda, and a new ‘HOPE’ has spread into Cambodia, Vanuatu, and India. The HOPE team are excited about all the future endeavours that continue to gather great momentum.
Darlene and Mark live in the beautiful Central Coast of New South Wales with their three daughters, Chloe and Zoe, Amy and son-in-law Andrew and beautiful grand-daughter Ava Pearl, grandson Roman Emmanuel Mark and brand new grand-daughter Ruthie Feather. I bought this book in 2002 or 2003. I read the first chapter and then quit for some reason or another. It's an easy and quick read, so I decided it was time to finish it or get rid of it.
I come from a charismatic background, so I know where Darlene is coming from, but now I see some holes in this type of approach as well. I think the most obvious one is that worship and praise seem to be emotion or expression based--what I say about God, what I feel about Him in my heart.
No doubt this is an element of worship, but I feel that there is a lot to say about worship in terms of right thinking about God and expressing our esteem for God through acts of service etc.
Several times throughout the book she does say that worship is more than songs and a service--that worship is "a lifestyle." But a lot of the time she talks about worship in terms of singing in a corporate service.
She did offer a lot of practical anecdotal advice for worship leaders in the church. I appreciate that she is vulnerable about her missteps and flaws.
Here are some good lines from the book:
--"Even if you are a part of a worship team, your most glorious moments of worship should be off the platform when you are alone with God" (29).
--"Learn how to seek God's face without worrying about saving yours" (45).
--"A worshiping church attracts worshiping people" (144).
--"True worship is not about stirring ourselves into an emotional frenzy" (169).
If you're looking for theology, you won't find much here. She does ground a lot of what she has to say in Scripture, especially the Psalms, but she doesn't get very intellectual about any of it. Still, there are some good exhortations in here.

This book has been completely eye-opening for me. I can honestly say that this book has changed my life. “Extravagant Worship” by Darlene Zschech was written to inspire people to become extravagant worshipers. Through sharing her experiences within her journey of becoming an extravagant worshiper, Darlene paints a clear picture of what it truly means to worship God. She expresses the importance of worship not only through music, but through our every day lives. “Extravagant Worship”, though written only in 2002, it is still reaching out to the hearts of believers everywhere, being an inspiration to all.
The purpose behind the creation of “Extravagant Worship” is to teach people of the significance of worship as well as what it truly means to worship Jesus wholeheartedly. An ‘extravagant worshiper’ is a term Darlene invented to describe someone who wholeheartedly worships God with everything they are. Through her journey of worshiping God, the desire to become an ‘extravagant worshiper’ was sparked within Darlene and is became a dream that would change the lives of many people. “My heart’s desire is that as God searches the earth, He will find me to be an extravagant worshiper. And now that this book has found its way to you, I pray that it will establish this quest to be an extravagant worshiper in your heart too”(18 Zschech). Darlene teaches that worship is much more than singing songs and making music. She teaches, “Singing lovely songs about the Lord is fantastic, but it is not enough. To worship is to speak to the Lord with words full of adoration”(30 Zschech). She also says, “Worship should be a way of life, with many facets of expression”(31 Zschech). Darlene dives into what it truly means to worship, reaching depths that open the eyes of the reader, revealing to them a new, fuller understanding. Not only does “Extravagant Worship” reach extreme depths of understanding, but it is written in a way that emits love to the reader.
“Extravagant Worship” is written in a way that draws that reader into the words that are being taught. Darlene writes every word from the bottom of her heart, genuinely wanting the absolute best for each person who reads her book. She uses language that is easy to understand, as though she is talking to a good friend. The language Darlene uses makes it easier to relate to what she is trying to get across, and captivates the mind of the reader. She uses many words that have to do with love and compassion, and writes about God’s love frequently. One example would be, “To be a worshiper is to fall in love with God, the Author of love, and accept the love He has for you. He adores you”(36 Zschech). Darlene’s tone is full of love and admiration for her readers. She organizes “Extravagant Worship” in ten different chapters, each chapter based around a different aspect of worship. She dives deeper and deeper into being an extravagant worshiper as each chapter progresses. Darlene Zschech’s book “Extravagant Worship” is an inspiration and an important lesson to learn, especially for me. “Extravagant Worship” has been an inspiration and eye-opening journey for me. It was a huge wake up call in many ways, and a comfort in many others. Darlene taught me things that I never could have learned from anyone else, and has a huge influence in my life. Her songs touch the hearts of everyone who hears them, and her passion for worship has been such an inspiration for me. “Extravagant Worship” has taught me not only how to worship extravagantly, and what it means to worship, but also why I worship. God is everything to me, and the love I have experienced in Him is something that is irreplaceable and unforgettable. Insightful!
I quite enjoyed this book because it took worship out of the conventional church building setting and brought it to everyday, real life. And it's actually what the Father demands from me. And it's my choice tho respond to that calling and be an extravagant, excellent worship. That is not possible if I don't lay everything down at the feet of Jesus throughout the week and be obedient in everything.
I would have liked to see more personal examples, that's why I gave a 4 stars rating instead of 5.

While it has one or two good quotes, this book wasn't worth the time it took to read. Some of her ideas seem good and scriptural. Other ideas might be good, but who knows where she's getting them from... she just seems to spout them as truisms with no support. Overall, there is a bit too much hype and "dream for success" kind of philosophy in the book. I'd wish for a more humble and profound book about worship. This one, in the end, was kind of annoying for me.

I loved this book. Darlene is such a humble person who just wants to worship her King but wants others to do the same. She gives great insight about worshiping God in that secret place. The way she writes and the experiences she talks about really makes you want to worship God in a new way.

I read this about 10 years ago and took it out again this past fall. God had many different things to show me this time - I love how He does that:). For those who are looking for some insight into worship through music, this is a book you want to spend some time reading.

This book has long been one of my favorites for dispelling the idea that worship is mere song. Darlene Zschech is an incredible singer and her heart as a worshiper is shown quite clearly in her writing here.

This book is full of toxic positivity. Darlene says that when we are angry or sad or frustrated, we should put those feelings aside and just praise God. As a Christian, I do believe that praising God and trying to look on the bright side of things can be helpful, but burying negative feelings all the time is not healthy and she doesn't seem to give any room for expressing those feelings. I only got through the first 4 chapters so that's what my review covers.
I especially had a problem with chapter 4, Emotional Fervor, where she starts out talking about feeling discouraged because your performance at church wasn't good, saying that we shouldn't take that to heart and spiral, but then goes on to say that "Van Gogh was manic depressive" as if those are at all the same thing. She quotes Psalm 88, one of the Psalms crying out to God in despair, saying that it "expresses a creative person's 'down' side" and that "When a creative person... is not yielded to the Holy Spirit or lordship of Christ, Psalm 88 is an accurate picture of how [they] might view life." I find this a troubling and confusing conclusion since as Christians we are supposed to believe that Scripture is divinely inspired. I'm not a Biblical scholar, but my understanding of the Psalms is that they provide an example to show that God cares about our anger and frustration and despair, and we absolutely have room to express those "negative" feelings, as Zschech calls them.
In chapter 2, Explosive Praise, she talks about going to a hospital in Africa full of children dying of AIDS, and talks about them performing the song "All Things Are Possible" for her. She says, "They put the reality of Christ ahead of their AIDS-riddled bodies. They sang with such faith!" She includes the song lyrics and writing credit in this chapter and, as it turns out, it's a song that she wrote. Maybe I'm cynical, but I don't think these sick children were singing this song only out of having faith and putting Christ first. Also, people who are sick and dying aren't necessarily sad every single moment. I just was not happy with this romanticizing of this situation. It felt exploitative.
Essentially, I feel that Zschech is advocating for an unhealthy relationship with your emotions, and I don't think that your relationship with God is helped by always pretending that you're happy. I think that there are definitely times when we should put aside our own feelings and focus on God and His greatness, but He also cares about us and I think that there is room for us to share feelings of sadness, anger, despair, and frustration with Him. She doesn't make this distinction, and that's my problem with this book.

This is a great meditation on worship, what it means to be a worship leader, and how to worship more fully as an individual, as a leader, and as part of a team. Zschech uses so much scripture along with her own experiences and songs to point people to the only one worthy of our praise.

Darlene Zschech begins her book Extravagant Worship with the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with costly perfume. This woman is an extravagant worshipper. Darlene describes this woman’s worship as: excessive, abundant, expensive, superfluous, lavish, costly, precious, rich, priceless, and valuable. This story is a great introduction and explanation of the theme – extravagant worship.
The book covers all the aspects that create extravagant worship such as, having a godly lifestyle, talent, the power of praise, having a commitment to excellence, being emotionally connected to God and others, having a serving attitude and working with others. Darlene focuses on the importance of the worship leader having a humble attitude towards being upfront, remembering that they are there to serve, not to draw attention to themselves.
Mostly this book is written for worship leaders and those aspiring to be worship leaders. It helps them understand that first of all they need to be worshippers, then they need to be spiritually mature enough to understand what is required to lead people to a place of worship and not just doing what they enjoy or what will impress others.
Interspersed throughout the book are songs, poems and prayers that Darlene and others have written. This adds visual interest and character to the book. Side bars are also used effectively.
Overall a very useful resource for those who are on a worship team.

A central part of my life includes the need to connect with G-d, and to read and explore my faith and my connection with G-d. This book allows you to reflect on Him and to pray to Him, and to praise His name. The only thing I'd change in this book, aside from the cover, is that the book's author spends a lot of time telling us about her life. I know this is how her faith group preaches - by rooting their preaching in their lives and living by example, and by opening their experiences to be shared with others. However, I really did wish she'd spend less time speaking about herself, and more about G-d and how to draw him into our lives fully.

It's not an exclusive read for the worship leaders. Even the church goers can read and relate. It may talk about how we worship but we can also apply some of the points in our everyday lives. Somehow it helps renew our hope and faith. Extravagant worshipping is not just for the worship leaders, each of us should lead our worship in our hearts and really worship extravagantly. We need not to be really good, but we should know that in ourselves that our worship to God is the best we have, because God gave never gave us anything that's not whole. Don't you think it's just proper to rightfully offer everything we have in our worship to him?

An excellent, inspiring and thought provoking book. Very practical and I love Darlene's obvious passion for the church and bringing your best before God to encourage others to also engage in worship with Him.
Well worth reading for anyone involved in the worship team or wanting to reach others through worship music. A great read for those who want advice on how to be an authentic church member in any congregation.

Extravagant worship is being offered to our King across the planet, increasing in intensity and intimacy… cutting across all denominational barriers and all religious preferences. Our heart's quest should be that as God's eyes search the earth, He would find us to be an extravagant worshipper. May this book will not only finds itself in ones hands… but that it finds itself planted in our heart.

Great Non-Fiction book for church goers. The Author really focused on the worshipers attitude while praising the Lord in a worship service. A lot of the book was geared toward a worship team member or leader. But I still enjoyed the nuggets of wisdom for the average church attender. This is a good pairing with "Kiss of Heaven," also written by Darlene Zschech.

August 3, 2011I enjoyed this book. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I am neither a worship singer or musician and there is much in this book that is specific for them. In spite of that, I constantly found myself writing little quotes here and there that inspired me in my journey to be closer to God and to worship Him more. I highly recommend this book.

This is a must-read book for every worshippers (both personally in daily live and on stage), as the basic to prepare our heart and attitude towards the worshipping action as a believer. Well done. Blessed you all :)
