After unearthly beings strike without warning or mercy against humankind, Buddy, a German Shepherd, must band with other dogs to find food, water, and shelter in a world suddenly without their owners. But survival is not enough for Buddy, who holds out hope that he can find his human family again.
Go inside his mind–what he sees, hears, smells, thinks, and feels–as he tries to reunite with those he loves before it’s too late.
LOST DOGS by KENTON KILGORE is an innovative read that endears you even more to humankind’s best friend! I gave it 3.3 stars.
MY TEASE…
Something is wrong, and not just because a plane crashes near the “Home” where Buddy lives. His “Belongings” (the human family he protects and loves) are frantic and packing the car. Whatever is attacking Earth, it’s bad. Buddy can sense it. He can hear it, too. There’s an unfamiliar vibration in the air.
During the panic, Buddy loses track of Sally (a rescue) who also lives in the Bennett household. They can’t leave without her! Everyone is screaming and “Wet” is tearing from their eyes. And the strange sound is getting louder and louder, hurting Buddy’s ears.
He runs back into the house to find Sally. Their “Belongings” will wait. But after he convinces Sally it’ll be safer to leave than stay, they can’t find the car. It’s gone! They’re alone in a hostile world with “Scents” they’ve never smelled before.
Will they survive when they’ve lost everything that matters to them? And can they find their “Belongings,” if they’re even alive?
THOUGHTS…
Tail Wag:
The author clearly knows and loves dogs and that passion is shared throughout the pages! I also thought some of the language creation (the words that conveyed immediate understanding or were easy to acquire, such as “Belongings”) were innovative.
Tail Tuck:
For me, the dog language (words that are always capitalized, like “Not-Real Window” for TV set) and the everyday needs of the “Friends” (dogs) trumped the plot (the alien invasion that separated Buddy and Sally from their family). I felt it should’ve been the other way around. I wanted the plot to be the main entrée and the dog language and needs to be the sprinkle of spice.
Here’s a sample of writing:
“They go through the Trees, across a wide, open place were the tufted ends of the Yellow—like the kind around Homes—reaches almost to Buddy’s chin. Flaps wheel about, some of them perching on the Yellow, holding on as it sways under their weight. There are Littles here, lots of Littles, Buddy can smell, the same as in the open Home they found this morning. The Scent of Feed is strongest now: Buddy knows it’s on the other side of the field.”
QUICKFIRE RATINGS from 1 (ugh) to 5 (woo-hoo)…

OVERALL…
LOST DOGS is an innovative approach to understanding dogs and their loyal connections to humans.
I love all animals, but dogs in particular. They are my best friends, companions, comfort and reason to get up in the morning. I have rescued loved and fostered many, had more as my own heart dogs and advocated long for them. I have walked a harsh path at times taking in and loving the seniors and terminally ill, and comforted many more than my heart can hold to the rainbow bridge. I started this book and quickly stopped reading it as I thought at first it would be a trite look at this bond I hold so dearly....but was drawn back. I must say, my first impression was wrong....I cried the parts of it, not wanting to see Buddy disappointed....and could nearly picture some of this....perhaps minus the cause of it all. This book is purported to be heated towards young adults, but I promise you, it was captivating to this nearly senior citizen....read, hold your breath, and love your furbabies-dogs and cats even more. Never leave them behind....and fight for the ones who are mistreated, unloved and abandoned. They ALL matter!
This was a surprisingly good book! You almost forget that it’s written about dogs. Their human like reactions to the end of the world are just how humans would be. You have the heroes, who only want to help everyone, the people pleasers, the whiny complainers, the greedy and or lazy who only want to help themselves, the ones who will just take what they want no matter who it hurts, and the down right broken and evil ones. Buddy and Sally start out this adventure, to be joined by Poppy (who’s hilarious), Penny, Lil, and Jake. Their struggle is real and heartening. As new friends and foes come into the picture, things begin to change and emotions run high. I loved everything about this book except the “stickys” because I’m still not sure what that was.

Very unique- told completely from a dog's POV; thought-provoking and informative I found the overall plot boring and the pace too slow for my liking, paired with little payoff; wasn't a fan of the writing style and I felt like the dog terms were too forced at times; a lot of descriptions were unnecessarily long and lacking purpose, causing me to skip over paragraphs; reading about a location that I'm familiar with was cool though- was very accurate too
This is a must read if you are a dog lover, end of world storylines, like books with adventure, love, hope and friendship. This book was a great read from the beginning; good characters (that you will fall in love with), a great story line (though confusing at times since it is all being told from A dogs prospective) and a good amount of action. It lost a star only because I felt the ending was rushed; you spend a big part of the book invested in the ending only to have it break your heart, in more ways than one.
Since I am a canophile, this novel was especially enjoyable for me. Our "fur-babies" sleep with us and come & go as they wish through their two doggie doors. The author, Kenton Kilgore, showed great skill in observing the world through the eyes of these quadrupedal canines. It was great to read how they felt about their "belongings" and the world around them. During most of the time that I was reading this book, I had one or more of our dogs sitting with me. What an experience! I highly recommend this novel. The reader will learn much about dogs from it.
This was a excellent book!! I didn't put it down until it was finished. This is the story of a alien invasion through the viewpoints of dogs. Most of the humans are dead and it is time for the dogs to learn to care for themselves. Very intriguing book. I recommend this book to everyone.......
The best way I can explain this as a sci fi nerd and dog lover/enthusiast: Homeward Bound the Incredible Journey meets the Apocalypse. Plus I love Beagles and German Shepherds. This book was a deadly kryptonite mix for me. I'm glad I had the last 2 days off from work because it allowed me to finish many wonderful books in my backlog.
A delightful easy read where you can enjoy the company of Buddy and Sally as they navigate through a world destroyed. Aliens have arrived and laid claim to all we cherish....especially our families. It takes a special talent to see ourselves through the eyes of a dog but Mr. Kilgore has that ability and puts it on display in this story.
The Loyalty of Hachi and Shield of Brothers in Arms
When the world collapses and no people remain to care for beloved pets, what are they to do? Where are they to go? Kenton Kilgore brilliantly, hauntingly, and lovingly answers these questions and more as his story delves into the new social dynamic of these lost dogs. Beautiful story and beautifully written.
I gave this book a day to stew in my head before I reviewed. It really leaves you with a lot of emotions and thoughts by the end of it. Which, to me, is the sign of a good book.
The neediness and almost-human qualities many dogs around us everyday comes across so clearly on the pages of Lost Dogs. So does their energy which, I confess, made for a difficult read at times.
It's a very stream-of-consciousness sort of writing, which isn't quit my cup of tea; nevertheless I found Lost Dogs to be intriguing, well-paced, and whispering to something canine inside me.
Every Friend(dog) in the story has a distinct personality, goal, and motive which makes for an intense cast. Their struggles to find what they're looking for (no spoilers) and their need to be with others and to Belong is truly touching and remarkable. It translates well to humans and dogs alike.
I would have given this book 5 stars but I just didn't like the ending. This is a dark story with lots of suffering. I am a dog and cat lover and I suffered along with the animals. The hatred Buddy has for cats is strange. My dogs and cats have always coexisted peacefully.
I don't usually read apocalyptic stories but the dog aspect is what made me pick it up. I'm glad I did. I wasn't sure about reading dog lingo but after the first chapter of was like reading my native language.
This book overall was so heart touching. This book really brought out the way that I see how my dogs talk! After reading this book it just makes me so much more aware of how my dogs are seeing and hearing things.
I am giving this book a 5 rating. This is because this was overall a great book and was amazing, and it just really captured everything. While reading this book I feel like I never got bored by what was happening and there were constant meeting new characters.
For people who want to read the book While reading only 3 or 4 people die. While reading this book some people get hurt but nothing to juristic or to Gorry. This book explains a lot about dogs' perspective and how they act to certain things and situations.
This book is definitely YA, nothing bad at all and is just a great book. This book is sad and exciting at the same time, and it just really is a great book. I just finished this book and now I am definitely recommending it to people!
Another thing is I love the way they have specific words for explaining the TV and windows and all the things and it just truly is so interesting. I could not put the book down!
BEWARE OF SPOILERS!-
Hello fellow people who have read this! Like I said before, this is a great book! My heart was really touched by all the characters and meeting everyone. I definitely had sad moments where i cried and laughed. There were some things I couldn't believe! When I met Jake and the stray (Dog/Friend) I knew that they were most likely to play a big role in the book and they did when they stood up with buddy against rex and the other dogs.
In this book I feel like the saddest part was when buddy finds Rob, Genn, And Audrey and doesn't want to go and live with sally. The character Roy definitely makes me laugh and makes me feel bad for buddy at the same time. I feel bad for buddy at the same time because he has only ever known Rob Genn and Audrey so when he finds out that they faded too is just really sad.
In the book I feel like it would be great to have a sequel of the book with the perspective of the stray dog's life before meeting buddy and sally or even Rex's perspective. I feel that it is so crucial to understand how everyone is feeling and just hearing about a little bit of their stories was just sad but also bade me want to know more about before.
Overall, it is just amazing how the characters are built and the Belongings/Owners/People leave, and the dogs have to find their way. I never thought that it would just come to rex sally and buddy, but it did. This book is overall just so good and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

These are troubling times in the Dog World. Read the book and find us people don't have much to worry about. The Friends in this novel are going through changing times now that their Belongings are not there for them. Can the Friends manage without their people families? It becomes a learning experience for the Friends when they are faced with choices that they have to make to survive. No longer are their owners there to feed, clean or care for the dogs. Or let them out of a locked house. Make sure there is an exit for your beloved pet if we are faced with the end of times for people. After all they give us so much. We are their world, let's make sure we remember to provide for them if we are no more.
Wonderful read. Great story. I enjoyed it so much I finished it in less than 10 hours.
This isn't a horror story, not in the usual sense. But to an animal /dog lover, it is definitely horrifying. Sad. Philosophical. It's certainly readable, but I don't care for the unrelenting sadness. The author supposedly wrote a different ending, probably because people objected to this one. My only real quibble is that this ending is a hard reach in my opinion. I can't say more without spoiling it. It's a good exploration of how dogs may think and perceive the world. The main characters are well developed, but the secondary characters are a bit flat. For the most part, that's fine since they aren't really intrinsic to the story.

I personally met this writer at awsomecon and he told me about his book. It seemed so interesting that we got lost dogs and stray cats. I was correct this book is truly amazing! This book is so heart touching. This book really brought out the way that I see how my dogs talk making me so much more aware of how my dogs are seeing and hearing things.

This book is definitely YA, nothing bad at all and is just a great book. This book is hopefull and exciting at the same time. I just finished this book and now I am definitely recommending it to people! I'm verry pleased with this find this is a great book!
Last, I love the fact that specific words explain things that we humans have names for but pets dont. Its so adorable!

I love dystopian literature and dogs. This was a breath of fresh air. The dogs all reminded of people I I know. Some we're good and we're not so. In loved Sally and of course Buddy. I have a Buddy but they are nothing alike. I really couldn't get a handle on what actually was causing all the death. Aliens I guess. But the dogs and their interactions were so interesting.
Keep reading, even when you think it's not for you.
I almost gave up on this book, but I really hate to do that, so I kept going. Pretty soon I couldn't put it down. I'm not into science fiction, but the invasion isn't the focus, it's just a mechanism. The story is about how we relate to the world, each other, and especially to dogs. A very touching and thought provoking read, in the end.
This was a good book from the perspective of dogs as the world ends. We learn about their language and reference points, which was simple to understand. It’s sad in parts, sometimes funny, sometimes dark and sometimes bittersweet. I loved the Poppy character as he reminded me of my Yorkie/Pom mix, always thinking she is bigger than her 9 lbs!!
The apocalypse through the eyes of dogs. What would they do once humans are wiped out. I loved the characters and the way they grew and changed due to their fight for survival. I was reminded a bit of Animal Farm. Thank you to the author for such a good read.
I found this story boring. I didn't mind the dog language the writer created. It just didn't hold my interest. Reading this with a child might make it more interesting. A child would probably enjoy the adventures of the dogs.
great book : interesting storyline have read many apocalyptic books but this one is different: it’s the storyline of the dogs that are left behind when their owners are killed and suddenly have to fend for themselves: finding food and water
I thought this would be a interesting story, from the viewpoint of a Dog. It turned out that way but Sooo terribly Sad. This story made me cry and feel very depressed by the end of it.
A really interesting take on the lives of animals, primarily dogs in this story, without humans. While they “can” survive without us, and us without them, it’s usually better when we’re together.
A very imaginative sci fi novel. What if aliens arrived and wiped out humanity leaving only animals? Kilgore does a terrific job with the dog personalities. Each dog’s character is wel developed. The ending though was a little disappointing though.
I was surprised by this novel. A story about the end of world and all animals being left to exist and work toward surviving. While reading you are forced to identify what the dogs are talking about and that was interesting. Overall a good read, different to say the least.
If you love dogs deeply, as I do, it was very hard to finish this book. But I did. I don’t think I will attempt another book like this. This author is very good at writing and pulls you into the heart of his subject.
