  魔法師吉伯特.諾瑞爾從約翰郡隻身來到倫敦,決心重振英國魔法。他吝嗇、乖戾、未老先衰,但是也是位法力高強,能令雕像開口,能讓某大臣年輕的未婚妻起死回生的傳奇人物。從約翰郡到倫敦,人們被他神祕的魔法迷得神魂顛倒。

  在倫敦,諾瑞爾收了一位年輕學徒史傳傑,他高大、迷人且桀驁不馴。

  師徒雙雄聯手,為當時的英王室召來幽靈船,一夜之間鋪就了通天大道。令河流改向,令天氣變色,最終幫助王室贏得了對抗拿破侖的戰爭,頓時成為舉國稱頌的英雄。

  然而史傳傑法力日進之下,野心也與日俱增,相較於淡泊名利鍾情山林的諾瑞爾。兩代魔法師之間的衝突日漸高升。此際,另外一位歷史傳奇人物隨之上場:烏鴉王,英國魔法史上高手中的高手。此高人多年未露面,史傳傑千方百計找上了他。

  史傳傑對這位傳奇法師的要求越來越過分,全然不顧後果,最終威脅到他與諾瑞爾的關係和他所擁有的一切寶貴財富……

  兩個魔法師為了英國魔法復興事業走到一起,替英國打敗拿破倫奠定勝局,最終由於理念的不同而分道揚鑣……..

Susanna Clarke

Susanna Clarke was born in Nottingham in 1959. A nomadic childhood was spent in towns in Northern England and Scotland. She was educated at St Hilda's College, Oxford, and has worked in various areas of non-fiction publishing, including Gordon Fraser and Quarto. In 1990, she left London and went to Turin to teach English to stressed-out executives of the Fiat motor company. The following year she taught English in Bilbao.

She returned to England in 1992 and spent the rest of that year in County Durham, in a house that looked out over the North Sea. There she began working on her first novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

From 1993 to 2003, Susanna Clarke was an editor at Simon and Schuster's Cambridge office, where she worked on their cookery list. She has published seven short stories and novellas in US anthologies. One, "The Duke of Wellington Misplaces His Horse," first appeared in a limited-edition, illustrated chapbook from Green Man Press. Another, "Mr Simonelli or The Fairy Widower," was shortlisted for a World Fantasy Award in 2001.

She lives in Cambridge with her partner, the novelist and reviewer Colin Greenland.

באנגליה חלופית יש קוסמים אבל רובם הם רק אקדמאים שמעולם לא עשו קסם. מר נורל וג׳ונתן סטרנייג׳ מחליטים כל אחד בדרכו להחזיר את הקסם המעשי.

הרעיון טוב אבל נתקעתי באמצע הכרך הראשון ולא הצלחתי לסיים למרות כל הניסיונות. הכתיבה תקופתית במתכוון וזה פגע בשטף הקריאה שלי.

This is of course a review of both volumes of the book, which are inseparable.
I admit was convinced to read this by Neil Gaiman's recommendation. I am a sucker for Gaiman and I'll read whatever he tells me to read (yes, even the Old Testament).
I must admit that at start I was a bit disappointed. At first the book seems like not much more than Jane Austen-ish periodical writing mixed with a bit of historical fiction, and the former is really not my cup of tea. It started very slowly, but luckily, when the pace picked up, I found that the book did grow on you.
It is hard to put the finger on it, but I think the characters have much to do with it. The author managed to get me strongly interested and involved in the lives of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, as well as the rest of the cast. The second thing I like was how the historical fiction grows and evolves. At first it is just something in the background, and it slowly becomes more and more important and critical to the book.
Clearly, the hardest part in reading this book is the pace. If you enjoy the historical writing it is probably bliss from the start, but if you are rather indifferent to that, you will need to get through the first 300 pages into the more interesting parts, and even then, it is not going to become a roller coaster. I think it was worth the effort to read the whole story, but I still wish it wasn't that hard. I give it three and a half stars out of five, and since I read it in two volumes I'll give them three and four stars respectively, though I'm really rating them together.

כבר הרבה זמן שאין קוסמים אמיתיים באנגליה. החיבור לעולם הפיות נעלם, וגילדות הקוסמים הן בסך הכל סוג של תעסוקה לג'נטלמנים.
מר נורל הוא הקוסם המעשי הראשון מזה זמן רב, והוא דמות פשוט נפלאה. אחריו מגיע ג'ונתן סטריינג', והלמידה שלהם זה מזה, היריבות שלהם זה בזה והאופן בו הם מובילים את הקסם באנגליה מעצב את הסיפור ואת ההתרחשויות.
זה ספר כיפי, שנון, שפשוט כדאי לקרוא. הוא קצת ארוך (שני כרכים לא דקים) אבל שווה את ההשקעה לכל מי שאוהב אנגלים וקסם.

前半段在講諾瑞爾的時候,故事比較古板無聊一點。後面講到 Strange 在戰爭時候的作為就相對有趣許多。不過,整體讀起來更像是歷史小說多過於奇幻小說,整體故事節奏比較慢,事件較不連續,鋪陳也較久。
