Saint Dominic and the Rosary

Rate this book
Illustrated Catherine Beebe presents a dramatic account of the incredible life of St. Dominic in this tenth title in the popular Vision Books series of saints for youth 9 - 15 years old. As a young priest, Dominic sat all night at a wooden table in a village tavern. He preached the truths of the Church to an embittered inn-keeper and, in the morning, joyfully received the man again into the faith of his fathers. This was the beginning of the great preaching career of Saint Dominic, the "Athlete of Christ" and founder of the order which bears his name. Saint Dominic led a life of excitement and adventure. As a boy he sold his books to feed the poor and offered himself as ransom for a prisoner. As a young priest he rode with a king's cavalcade to carry a marriage offer to the princess of Denmark from the prince of Castile. But his greatest adventures came when he walked from town to town and preached the word of God and the power of the Holy Rosary prayer. The work of the thousands of Dominican priests and sisters all over the world stands today-seven centuries later-as a living memorial to the sanctity of their founder. A friend was talking about St. Dominic and that made me suddenly think of this book . . . I haven't read it in ages; but I must've read it a thousand times as a child and a young teen.

IT WAS SO COOL, YOU GUYS.

It was the epitome of cool-ness. St. Dominic is still my hero. I'll probably name a kid after him some day; be forewarned ;-) I still remember how he would always sing hymns as he tramped all over Europe, alone, preaching . . . including that one time robbers snuck up on him and he just confused them with his singing and went on his merry way??? #swag

First read this thirteen years ago when I was beginning my homeschooling sojourn. A very inspirational little book about a great saint, appropriate for second stage readers and for family read-a-louds. Good intro to a great saint.

This book is part of the curriculum for my 6th graders so I had to read it before they do. It was a simple read that outlined the story of St Dominic of the Rosary. He is pretty epic! I’m excited for my kiddos to read it and learn about the great saint that started the order of Dominicans and gave us the gift of the Rosary.

A GREAT overview of Dominic's life, told simply (as in--heresy is explained easily, the political overtones are somewhat edited or removed entirely). A great primer on the life of St. Dominic and Dominican life. It was written in 1956, so some of it feels a bit dated, but the general gist of it is good.

This book is powerful. St. Dominic's life was truly extraordinary and deserves thoughtful meditation. Indeed, this book has made me wonder if my calling is to be in the Dominican Order- my namesake, St. Catherine of Siena, was. I even sort of wish I was born in the thirteenth century. Enough about me, though, you're here to learn about the book.

It's laid out cleanly and in an easy to follow way. It has simple but powerful words. It follows St. Dominic from his childhood to his death. The author perfectly chose what to write about and give to the readers. It begins by looking at a scene from his later life that demonstrates his character and then goes earlier to lead back there.

I highly recommend this book to all, especially those questioning their calling.

A great and informative story about Saint Dominic, detailing his life and how he became a saint. I didn't realize it was for young readers 'til I started reading it but I decided to continue with it. I'm glad I did. It makes me want to look for a more detailed history of the saint. This particular book is simple enough, yet at the same time, full of information young readers are bound to enjoy it. It was interesting to learn the connection of Saint Dominic and the Rosary, I was unaware of that so I'm pleased to find this about. I recommend this book to young AND old readers, it's that good.

We really enjoyed this biography, although I didn't really love all the asides in it (going out of the time period to talk about the Dominicans today, etc.) they were informative, but interrupted the flow of the narrative.

This was definitely a children's book. However, it has inspired me to read more about St. Dominic. I think it's the subject matter rather than the writing.
