The Borg farm, something of a refuge for anyone who needs help, is the home of Orlygur the Rich, an energetic and compassionate Icelandic farmer sometimes spoken of as “the King” because of the vast number of servants he retains and the hundreds of cattle, horses, and sheep he owns. The story follows his life and the lives of his two sons, both as different from each other as could be, their life decisions and the people they impact, all in a small, close-knit Icelandic village. An epic family saga and a portrait of human nature in many of its different forms.

4.5 Well, this was a journey. Following the male line of the family from the Borg farm, you get a glimpse of life struggles, family love and sacrifice, the cost of ambition and intricacies of life in a small Icelandic village. This book is so full of beautiful passages about how close-knit the community and individuals are to nature, how it forms a second layer to their life and communicates with them in a voiceless language. Also, you get glimpses of different human hearts, different dreams, different strivings. One of the most impactful themes in this novel is unhealthy ambition and its cost and impact on so many people. This is also a story of redemption and hope, but with great struggles. Half a point less for melodramatic and too romanticized parts (a literary product of its time) and too preachy parts, but all the stars for the scenery, the characters and the many visions of human soul and mind.

Get ekki annað en gefið bókinni fimm stjörnur.

Icelandic Author.

This is Gunnar Gunbarsson’s most well known novel. It is written as a semi-modern saga. A great read while traveling in Iceland.
