Preparing for the annual Winterfest, Tara vows to win the heart of an unresponsive skier, Erin's relationship with her boyfriend is threatened by a newcomer, and Noelle fears her secret problem is threatening her skating career. Original.
A popular novelist, playwright, and newspaper columnist, Cherie moves effortlessly from genre to genre, writing powerful and entertaining work, whether in literary hardcover teen fiction, mass market paperback fiction, for the stage, film and television, and for her nationally-syndicated teen advice column.
📚 I read Girls in Love by Cherie Bennett for our February 2022 readalong in Point High School Book Club!
Honestly, this book really aged well. It still has those vintage vibes, meaning you can definitely tell it’s older. It has the quintessential after-school-special moments with This was my first Cherie Bennett and I’m so glad I liked it, because now I’ll have the courage to start reading my huge stack of Sunset Island series books!
Immediately, I loved the introduction to our characters. It somehow felt way more realistic than many of the vintage young adult/coming of age novels we like to read in our book club. Erin’s family are the town undertakers and run the town morgue. Tara’s the unabashed flirt with a heart of gold and a sweet sense of humor. Noelle is killing herself to reach her Olympic figure skating dreams. All three girls live in Love, Michigan and the story takes place during a Winter Sports Festival. Erin is our Elizabeth Wakefield with a boring long term relationship to boot. Tara is our Jessica Wakefield, minus the sociopathic tendencies. Noelle is the victim - At the onset she’s more of a cautionary tale. Noelle’s storyline reminiscent of Saved by the Bell and 7th Heaven.
The girls have signed up to some sort of welcoming committee/buddy system with some of the athletes, who of course turn out the be total hotties. There are plenty of humorous jokes involving the town name of Love as well. Ostensibly this has all the hallmarks of its type - a group of girls who are all friends, on some sort of school break holiday, meeting cute boys probably from out of town and having a vacation fling. I appreciated that this one turned on its head a bit.
Overall I’m grading up on a scale and giving it a 4 star - because it’s excellent for its genre of mid-90s era young adult romance.
this is the first ever english novel I read back when I was 14. I might not remember what happened in this book, but I sure can remember how it felt being 14 and reading this.
