From childhood through nursing school, Katherine and Sarah were best friends. Now they set out to take all that life had to offer - - and were swept up in the rugged, positively breathtaking world of two young pilots, men who took to the skies with a bold spirit. And who dared them to love.
Together they embraced a tumultuous world where luck and desire meet. Where the winds of war challenged their hearts. And where passion soared beyond their wildest dreams.
I love Jodi Thomas's writing style. This book dragged on for me though, it was never ending. I did love the story line except for what Bart did to Sarah, that was so, so wrong. Another thing I extremely disliked in this novel was how much time was wasted, between Katherine and Cody and, between Sarah and Bart. I did love Sarah's personality with all her perseverance and how she always thought the best of her situation. An extremely enjoyable ending of the story, but I personally would have loved to have seen a sequel novel with the children's stories or at least an epilogue for about 5 - 10 years later. I believe that Jodi Thomas's series are her best work.
This book is in my top favorite of all time reads. I have read it countless times and get blown away with each read. A wonderful insight to the lives of the nurses on the front line. Of lives loved and lost. Magical tale.
This book is set in the days up to, and during the first World War. Most of Jodi Thomas' books are set in Texas just after the Civil War or present day. Two orphan girls become best friends and do everything together. Katherine is a tall, green eyed red head with a temper. Her best friend Sarah, is a lovely short brunette. They decide to go into nursing. They worked for a scholarship and had very long days in nursing school. At the end of school, they had to commit to a year of working in the state mental hospital in order to pay for their tuition. A tough job. Kat is the adventurous one and decides she has to meet the pilots that are doing a show nearby. Kat wants to go up in a plane. Plane flight was just a new technology at the time and many pilots got killed in the shows and the planes were pretty flimsy, made of canvas and wires. But that doesn't stop Kat. They go to a dance where they meet two pilots. Both Sarah and Kat are interested in the pilots. But they have a show schedule all over the country and Kat and Sarah are busy working at the hospital. Years go by and the first World War starts in Europe. The pilot Cody Masters, Kat's friend, ends up instructing pilots in France and Kat goes over to try and find him. She is working at the Red Cross hospital behind the enemy lines. I don't want to give too much away but it is a story filled with action and lots of adventures. The girls and the pilots go through so much in a short time. Humor and perseverance and great characters. You feel that you are cheering on the characters as the story unfolds.
