This book was another "find" on Project Gutenberg.

Written in the late 1940's it is an attempt to apply scientific research to finding a spouse. The authors ran a marriage research institute for Penn State and used their experiences and research to write this book.

Much of the advice in this book is actually very good. Personality, education, background, shared values, and the like are important factors that contribute greatly to the stability and happiness of a marriage.

Where this book goes off the rails a little is how it views the role of the man and the woman in woman. It is definitely a product of the 1940's. But aside from that, as mentioned above, it does contain much sage advice about compatibility and markers of long term success in marriage.

Plenty of useful advice and things to think through and consider. It’s also just as self reflective as it is evaluating the kind of person one wants to be with. At some point you’ll need a paper & pen to answer a few questions and tally the results.
It’s very much a product of its time, and a number of things don’t really apply today (except a couple decides to do it that way).
It’s also can be a tad morally grey in a few bits for my Christian sensibilities.
I’d still recommend it though.
