"For many years the study of the prophets has been to me a challenging experience and a source of inspiration and information. During recent years friends have asked me to write a short usable commentary on the twelve Minor Prophets.... From the prophets I have derived an insight into God's work among the nations which has helped me to determine something of the principles on which He works among them. This has enabled me to look to Him, rather than to men for the solution of modern problems; for God continues to rule in the kingdoms of men."
BR> When Homer Hailey wrote these words little did he know how well this book would be accepted. All of his adult life he had a desire to pass on the knowledge he acquired in his intense study of God's word. This book, the Minor Prophets, is his best seller and is used in church Bible classes and seminaries throughout the world. In its fifteenth printing it is still in demand.
Hailey was one of the 20th century's most widely-known and beloved preachers and teachers. He was noted for his knowledge and simplicity. In his writing he was able to express himself so all could read and understand the biblical text, particularly the Old Testament prophets. Although Hailey departed from this world in the year 2000, his works live on in numerous books and publications. His seventy-seven years of study continue to benefit others.
A Commentary on the Minor Prophets by Homer Hailey is a compiled look at the twelve books of the Minor Prophets. Hailey’s commentary thoughtfully includes compilations of other commentator’s insights throughout, an introduction into the Old Testament, prophets, false prophets, dates and times, chronology, and political background of the times. Only after all of this does Hailey breakdown each book with an overall theme, message, outline, lesson, and history while going through the books verse by verse.
Hailey does a thorough and insightful job of putting together a commentary that one can learn from but does not take away from the words of the Bible itself. Every reference is clear and points to the Words of God as holy and true. When finished the reader comes away having a greater understanding, not only of the background of the books and why they were written, but having a greater understanding of the prophets true purpose – to point the way to Christ Jesus. This book is an excellent work that is easy to follow, reference, and understand. It is a definite asset in understanding the Minor Prophets.
I've used this commentary for years. But I had never read it from start to finish until now. It is a fine work. It is obvious that Homer Haily spent countless hours in study, prayer, and meditation on the word of God.
This Commentary on The Minor Prophets is a well-studied and researched effort by author Homer Hailey. The true confession is that I picked it up at Chapter 4 with Amos and then did a cursory read of the first three chapters.
Been going along the Bible Recap chronological study and this book proved a valuable resource when studying the minor prophets.
Haley’s structure for each of the 12 consists of General Observations that provide the historical times, the message intended, the lessons. This is followed by an Outline of the Book of the specific prophet and then Comments, where Haley goes verse by verse.
This book proved a jewel, and it will remain on my shelf of commentaries for future reference.
