Some gifts are given with no expectations or obligations attached. Others always come at a price. This gift came anonymously. I have no idea what to think.
I left my husband. I was stuck, on my own, and near starving. Until this unearthly gift came to me in the form of a vanilla envelope. Cash that I never asked for, but desperately needed. It was enough to move and start a new life.
But will this mysterious gift come at a higher price? Will my mysterious benefactor come for me? Will my husband find me? Will this end up being something else I have to survive?
This is the first installment in the Crystal Jenison episodic serial series.

Sweet yet emotionally charged. I love the characters in this story: a warm-hearted woman seeking freedom from an abusive husband, and a self-made man who used to have a crush on her at high school.
The writing quickly sets up the mood and the background of the characters. Double POV works great for me. Especially because I could get a glimpse of a battered yet strong woman trying to overcome her mistakes, and of a man with a good heart and a great potential for love and sensuality.
I'm very fond of this story. It's not until the last part that they actually cross paths, but it feels as they're constantly connected and I really liked that. Looking forward to part 2!
The story begins by telling you Crystal is an abused wife, ticking off each time, one by one, giving us inside information about the how Jake has not just smacked her around but also mentally cut her down making her believe she was his less, worth nothing to his lawyer presence. Crystal bides her time, plans to remove herself from his live with as few wave as she could make. Taking the cat with her, leaving most of her possessions and heading for the train and thinking she makes it when the still drunken Jake shows up, and Chase, an old friend, intervenes. I enjoyed how Chase stands back, and helps her with envelopes of money yet is letting her heal before treading to heavily. I like the foreshadowing of the familiar eyes, Crystal will remember him sometime, but great start to the story. Very well written, can't wait to read the next installment.
