Cade: Fire and Ice

Rate this book
Cade: No one can do what I can do with a puck, a stick and some good ice. Destined for NHL stardom and known for my finesse both on and off the ice, I've had my eyes on the prize since I was five years old. Nothing is going to get in my way. At least that's how it was supposed to be, until I met Ellie Hesketh and the feeling of her body next to mine brought out my fiercely protective side and made me question everything I thought I knew.

Ellie: I'm that girl. The one from the wrong side of the tracks in a small town where appearances are everything. Not that I've got time for what anybody else thinks of me. I've got three little brothers who need raising and there's no one to do it but me. Until Cade walks into my life and starts to make me feel like maybe, just maybe, my life wasn't meant to be nothing more than a lonely struggle against hardship. The only problem is, he's only in town for a few short months and we both know that when he leaves, I can't go with him...

We're from different worlds. We both knew our paths were destined to deviate. But the sweet, perfect heat of being together blossomed into something more than either of us could handle and now I have a secret. A dimpled, blue-eyed secret who's the spitting image of his daddy. Cade lives in the big city now. A life of money, fame and adoring fans. So why is the media filled with stories about his reckless, self-destructive behavior? And what am I supposed to do when, during a live interview, he confesses to a secret of his own?

Love broke us. Can it put us back together again?

This is a full-length 58k standalone romance novel with a HEA and no cliffhanger! It includes steamy, adult situations and is intended for a mature audience over 18.

This is not a light book. It's an emotional book that one would be hard-pressed not to find touching, sad, maddening, and the need to clap a little when it ends.

The MCs

Him...

He is the good-hearted golden boy destined for success and with a view of the world that's always 'full' because he's been surrounded by people willing to always ensure his glass stays refilled.

All I'd done since I was a kid was eat, sleep, and breathe hockey. It was all that mattered. Until Ellie Hesketh came along and crept into my heart like a tiny, bedraggled kitten."

They're (his parents) not bad people, but they're not infallible either and I was still young enough to believe they were.

His life spirals as he realizes that sometimes it doesn't matter how full the glass is if it's the wrong glass being filled;)

I was taken aback by his kindness in the initial parts of this story. Very irritated that he didn't try harder or backtrack when faced with hard choices and pressures. And, I won't lie... His lifestyle choices in the female MCs absence were difficult to read. It felt like such a caring guy with so much love and such an alpha jock presence would've been more proactive and reasonable about his decisions.

I think what bothered me most was that he never attempted to change her living conditions or offer her a way to better what she was saddled with. NOTE TO AUTHOR: This element felt more like a plot hole, something the author didn't think about in her storyline, more so than an actual character flaw.

Her...

She's quite the opposite. She's the selfless girl that struggles for every scrap she can get. She's desperate for kindness but too afraid to dream it exists. She's the girl that knows the world isn't 'full' because everyone always seems to not only steal her drink but throw every glass she fights to get down, stomp it to bits, and use the shards to cut her.

..."but I clung to them the way a drowning person clings to a piece of debris even as they know it won't float."

I don't agree with a lot of the decisions this MC makes. Normally, I would hate a character that allowed herself to be abused, run over, shit on, ignored, and used. But, by damn, if her circumstances don't make it impossible not to empathize with her plight and reactions.

I'm not a crier, and I don't cut characters much slack for external circumstances. I'm a firm believer in the notion that you can't control what people do to you, but you can control how you respond to it. But, I still wanted to kick several asses for this girl.

It was helpful that the author laid out her thought processes and reasonings for her choices. A five year secret is a hard pill to swallow, and one that, without the MCs thoughts and reasons, I'd have judged her VERY harshly for.

The Romance & Plot

This is not a story of second chance love where MCs remain celibate... Just so you know and can judge your reading comfort accordingly. It's played down and diminished as hard, or rather limply lmao, as one can possibly diminish such OW scenes. It saddened me for both MCs vs pissing me off... If that helps readers decide.

It takes place over 10 long, agonizing years!

I think the author overplayed the middle-load of this book.

The first five year separation was understandable, youth, nativity, inexperience, miscommunication. The second separation, also five years, however, was over the top. Too many simple solutions, in fact the very solutions that took place at the end, could've occurred then and there. It put a damper on my rooting for them when I also felt that they were somewhat unwilling to fight for each other, just accept it wasn't meant to be, and let one bad reaction spell doom for rekindling a love they both felt and yearned to have.

I still rooted for each MC to find happiness and safety; I was simply too invested to not root for them.

Conclusion

You will need to be in the right mindset to read this book. While it's a love story , it's not light, not fluffy, and not full of meaningless angst from trivial shit like brain farts & jock itch.

Overall Opinion: This was an enjoyable read. I really felt for the h and all of her hardships, and I felt that the H was a genuinely good guy (which was nice for a change) even though he acted like a manho at times during their separation. They were a couple that were easy to root for, and even though the ending was kind of abrupt -- I felt like they got their HEA.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Ellie and Cade's story. Cade moves to town for a hockey team to further his career and get drafted. They need senior year of high school when he is in her history class. She is a social outcast because her mom is an alcoholic, and they are really poor. Cade sees past all of that, and pursues her. Their relationship moves pretty quickly and they fall in love. There is some drama with Cade's parents, and they are separated. 5 years later, they meet again but quickly get separated again. The story resumes another 5 years later where they work through some major issues, and find their HEA.

POV: This alternated between Ellie and Cade's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good but fast. It covers 10+ years, so it kind of needed to be. I never felt the need to skim, and I felt like it flowed well.

Instalove: Yes. It was pretty instant, as there wasn't that much development of feelings that we experience -- but I wouldn't call it the annoying type of instalove.

H rating: 3 stars. Cade. I loved how protective he was of Ellie automatically. I understand completely why he wasn't celibate during their time apart, but I kind of wish that we didn't hear about some of the experiences.

h rating: 4 stars. Ellie. Poor Ellie. She just kept on getting the crappy end of the bargain, but I admired her strength and her willingness to keep going. She wasn't bitter either, which easily could've happened with all that she had to deal with.

Sadness level: Moderate/low. I personally didn't need any tissues, but it definitely covered some heavy themes that could make a reader teary.

Heat level: Moderate. They have some steamy chemistry. Note - never had any mention of condoms, birth control, or stds and had unprotected sex every time.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW/OM drama: I'd say no. There was a jealous female bully that caused some issues, but she never had any relationship with the H.

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: This had good closure where I would call it a HEA. I still kind of wish we had been able to experience some more of their happiness before the very end.

How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.

I’m on a romance binge, trying out all the different subgenres. Today’s review is a New Adult romance book, Cade: Fire and Ice by Alana Hart and Jessica Lake. The story is told in alternating POVs. I wonder if the authors split the narrative between them? That would be fun.

New Adult is a tricky genre for me as a reader. I love overly emotional YAs and Romance. NA is definitely a bridge between the two, but sometimes they bug me. Some of the ones I’ve read have had the heroine or protagonist using gendered slut shaming words against their rivals. Their rivals are always awful people, but do we need to use their sexual choices as a sword? I don’t think so.

Also, for some reason the men in the stories can get a little too alpha for my liking. A strong man is great, but if he’s punching every wall he comes across, he has anger management problems. That’s not attractive.

You’ll be happy to know, Fire and Ice only features one wall punching, and it didn’t come from a place of deep wrath inside of him. He was young and frustrated at that point in the story. I, as the reader will forgive him for the one transgression. He was sweet overall (still an alpha, but kind).

I would say the story’s strength is in the beginning. The authors set up the characters very nicely. Elle is a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. She’s growing up in a trailer park with an abusive mother and caring for her younger brothers. She’s also the small town’s whipping girl.

Her origins were heartbreaking to read. Just preserving through her life showed a tremendous amount of strength. (Part of me really wished that this book had been written as a YA. I think it could help young girls in a similar situation feel less alone). She was very likable and felt real to me.

Cade is a boy who recently moved to the small town in order to pursue his fledgling career as a hockey player. (Fun fact: My nephew moved to Canada in his freshman year of high school to do the same thing. He completely burned out by senior year and is now happily employed as a cinematographer). Cade’s family is very wealthy, and supportive of hockey playing. Beyond supportive, a little bit overly regimented and controlling.

Because this is a high emotional stakes NA book, they hate Elle. Everyone dislikes Elle. Very strange, she’s very sweet.

They meet at school, and feel an instant attraction, but the relationship builds slowly. Elle doesn’t feel good enough for Cade. Can you blame her? She’s been living with constant abuse her whole life.

He gently breaks through her emotional armor and they fall in love. I couldn’t have been happier about that. Elle had a rough life.

Everything after this is probably spoiler land, so I’ll skip it. (Oops, I just remembered Cade also broke a counter. I’ll forgive him again. He wasn’t a rage machine at all). The characters were well setup, and I was sucked into the story. It’s a very fun read that touched on some very hard issues.

This book (like so many other NA stories) had a ton of sex in it. I didn’t think the story needed it, but it’s a part of the NA world. What are you going to do?

It was a fast and fun read with well-drawn characters. I liked it.

This is one heartbreaking story. Ellie is a young girl who lives in the trailer with an alcoholic mom and young siblings to watch after. She gets treated with abuse by the other students and looked down by everyone else.

Cade is the boy wonder with a golden future in hockey. He doesn't understand the dynamics in the town and sees no reason he can't be with Ellie. Their time together is sweet and sad at the same time. He makes her feel good but you know something is going to happen and it does.
Cade goes on to his career but can't leave behind the memories. He comes back after five years and it is not what he expected. He continues his life of women and alcohol and partying until he has a real wake up call.

If I am in the right mood, I really enjoy these tearjerkers. I definitely was crying thinking of the life Ellie lived and how low her expectations were of others. She only trusted her brothers to be there for her. Cade is very arrogant and while he cares for Ellie he doesn't truly understand her life. When push comes to shove, he chooses himself. It is hard to redeem him but the author makes a good effort. It is a sad story of young love lost and a second chance at making it right.

I received a copy in return for a honest review.

Just WOW!!!!

If you can read this with dry eyes and not feeling shattered......get a heart. If you can read this and not feel repaired and made whole, again.....get a heart.

First, your heart is tearing and away from your chest for Ellie and her brothers, then in comes Cade. Your heart begins to reclaim its rightful place inside your chest......for a sweet, agonizing moment.....until it's ripped away, thrown to the ground, stomped on, and pulverized. You agonize for these two. You curse their lives, choices, and circumstances. Then comes this huge glimmer of hope that you will cling to....then that's ripped away. Again, there goes your sad little heart. Why, why, why can't life give these two what they so desperately want, need, hope for. How do these two not deserve HAPPY AND TOGETHER. Then......oh, Cade. He picks up our shattered hearts. Then Ellie helps him reclaim that rightful place in our chest.

This book will do all that for you. Gut you, repair you, shatter you, and then gather up the pieces and make you whole. Start to finish, beginning to end....it captivates your mind. It opens your heart. It cleanses your soul. It unleashes every feeling to the pain, heartache, confusion, and wonder that exist for those who love TOTALLY and WHOLLY and FIERCELY and ETERNALLY that one made just for them.

I love a good hockey romance as much as the next girl. I love a good Hero and a good heroine even more. Unfortunately for me I wasn't a big fan of the Hero and I thought the heroine needed to give the Hero a few hard kicks in the a## for his behavior. The two MCs meet in high school and Cade is the new to town, golden boy hockey player with the NHL daft in his sights. Ellie is the town drunk's daughter whose trying to go to school, trying to take care of her 3 younger brothers while her drunk mother drinks away every cent.

I enjoyed Cade and Ellie's high school relationship more than I enjoyed their post-high school relationship. I understood Cade's absence from Ellie during high school but after he was drafted and in the NHL? He supposedly couldn't get her out of his mind yet never reached out to her and slept with every girl he could. And Ellie was continuing to survive post-high school with her brothers. I admired Ellie's pragmatism and her determination to keep her and her brothers together. I wished for a better H for her to be honest.

I chose this book because it 1) was a second chance romance and 2) it had "secret" baby.

Loved it. My heart just broke for Ellie. Cade made some stupid decisions, but he owned up to them. Would love to see Jacob get a book.

This is my first book by this author and the writing was pretty good. Some of the dialogue was a little cheesy but it was a light hearted read which is what I was looking for. Its written in alternating pov's and is available through Kindle Unlimited. This review contains mild spoilers.

Ellie is from the wrong side of the tracks, lives in a trailer with an alcoholic mother raising her 3 younger brothers. Cade is new in town to attend the best school for hockey players with potential for the NHL. He is instantly drawn to her but she tries to downplay it to keep the vicious mean girls from bullying her. When their relationship goes to the next level his parents move him out of town to pursue his dream career with out any distractions.

Through out all their time apart Ellie works 2 jobs and raises her brothers. Cade is living a life of wild parties and women in LA. After 5 years he makes a trip back home to see the girl he loves and left behind for the first time. They spend one night together but have words over they way she is living and they part ways until another 5 years pass. Ellie goes to see him in LA when he has a accident that sidelines his career to tell him something she has withheld from him. With the news he goes back with her. In the end they all get their HEA. 3.5 Stars

It was kind of incomplete .
I mean the H here was mind of beta , though sweet his actions came across as too mild and non confrontational, he never actually did fight for the h.
I did understand the first 5 year separation but the next 5 was utterly rubbish with no sense or reason.

Poor h i mean the things she had to go through with.
She deserves everything the H hopefully spoils her with.
Again i never did get the 2 act break up and felt it was unnecessary.
I wanted more comeuppance for bitches who tormented the h in high school as well as the mother.
Hateful people

Could have helped with an epilogue further into their future but then it’s just me getting greedy.

I haven’t read enough books by this duo to know this for certain, but I suspect they simply don’t write well together. This book fluctuated wildly between extremely good and absolutely terrible, with strange, long, descriptive passages in between, as though desperately trying to find continuity between one piece of the timeline and the next. I skipped forward enough to at least be satisfied by the ending, but so much in between was just not worth reading.

i found this story a little slow. It took a long time to get anywhere. I didn't feel that the characters were very deep, or developed. They didn't really change or grow. It was just kind of there, slowly going back and forth, moving to the happily ever after.

i loved this book all of the way up until the ending. so much time was spent detailing and building the characters and situations (in a very good way...my favorite part of the whole book) that the ending seemed to lack by comparison. the ending seemed very hurried and too perfect. its almost like watching a 3 hour movie, and the resolution takes place in the final 5 minutes in the most perfect of ways...no hurdles...just smooth sailing after all of the strife...it felt sterile by comparison to all of the previous emotional development. i also loved the exploration of the different socioeconomic strata. i honestly didnt have high hopes for this book (yes, i *shock* judged a book by its cover :p ), but this has to be one of my more favorite books ive read lately...even though i didnt enjoy the ending as much as the rest...so much so that im still giving it 5 stars despite the "quick and sterile ending." definitely a heavy read, but a good and worthy emotional journey.

Awesome Romance Book

Awesome story line. Poor girl with no hope and full of love finds happiness and love in rich boy who's parents don't approve. What better story line is there. Add in Hockey with some drama and you have an awesome story. Definitely gonna look up more books by this author. I couldn't put this book down. I even took the book to work with me. I didn't want to wait to finish reading it.

I don't know what to think about this book. On the one hand I really enjoyed the plot line and the characters but on the other hand I felt like I didn't really see them get to know each other. From what I gather they dated a few weeks in high school but I didn't see any substance to their relationship. Everything was pretty physical except for the few moments he got to see her home life.

Loved it! Even though Cade was a super hot hockey star, he just wasn't strong enough to stand up to his snooty parents and fight for Ellie, the poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Against all odds, Ellie raised her 3 brothers while her weak, abusive, alcoholic mother tried so desperately to kill Ellie's chance at love. Who will win?

I would have loved this book but I hate that he was doing drugs and whoring around for years while she was struggling. He was so hurt, yet this was his behavior. Hmm. It ended really well though. Christopher was cute. I would love to hear about her brother, the oldest one, Jacob.

Definite middle of the road novel for me. There were things I loved about it and things I was meh over. The timeline spans a good 10 years and beyond. It is told from both characters point of views. It's a typical second chance romance with everything thrown in.

Wow, this book was really emotional. I was in tears just a couple of chapters in. Ellie had a tough life and Cade was just what she deserves, someone that loves her completely. A fantastic read, just would have been much better if there was more to it.
