Huelle studied philology at Gdańsk University, and later became a journalist. He worked for a time for the press service of Solidarność (Solidarity). He has also taught literature, philosophy, and history. He was director of the Polish Television in his home town from 1994 to 1999.
His literary debut came in 1987 with Weiser Dawidek, made into a film, Weiser, by Wojciech Marczewski in 2000.

PL:Ojciec i syn wybierają się po nowy stół, którego zdobycie nie będzie tak proste i oczywiste jak myśleli; mały polski chłopiec nie podziela niechęci rodziców do swojej tajemniczej sąsiadki - starej Niemki, która wkrótce zostanie przesiedlona; Wuj i jego siostrzeniec gubią się w Tatrach i znajdują tajemniczą wioskę której nie ma na żadnej mapie. Turysta w Dublinie wspomina swojego dziadka - ekscentryka który zostawił babcię dla innej kobiety.
W opowiadanich Huellego przeszłość miesza się z teraźniejszością, tworząc barwny i bajkowy obraz Gdańska i okolic z lat zamierzchłych: wielokulturowej mozaiki rozszarpanej na zawsze przez tragedię wojny, lecz wciąż nasyconej tajemniczością i mistycyzmem. Podobnie jak w Weiserze Dawidku, opowiedziane historie łączy tematyka przemijającego dzieciństwa - i znikającego wraz z nim stylu życia, tradycji i kultury. Tytułowy czas przeprowadzki dotyczy zarówno przeprowadzki dosłownej - czasu, gdy miliony ludzi po wojnie zostało zmuszonych do zmiany zamieszkania, i gdy całe państwa zmieniały swoje granice - lecz też bardziej metaforyczny czas końca okresu starego porządku, i często przymusowej przeprowadzki w nowy. Zbiór przetłumaczył na język angielsi Michael Kandel, i pod tytułem Moving House & Other Stories wydało w 1996 roku wydawnicto Mariner Books.
ENG:Father and son embark to purchase a new table, a task which will not be as easy and straightforward as they have anticipated; a young Polish boy does not share his parents' distaste for his elderly, mysterious neighbor - an elderly German woman, who is soon to be resettled; an uncle and his nephew get lost while on an adventurous trip in the Tatras, and stumble upon a small and strange village, which cannot be found on any map. A tourist in Dublin remembers his grandfather - an eccentric man who left his grandmother for another woman.
In Huelle's stories past mixes freely with the present, creating a colorful and magical image of Gdańsk and its surroundings from time gone by: a multicultural mosaic forever torn by the tragedy of war, but still rich with mystery and mysticism. Like in Weiser Dawidek, stories told in this volume are connected by the theme of an ending childhood - and an end to a way of life, tradition and culture, which fade away with it. Eponymous time of moving house is the post-war period when millions of people had to literally leave their homes, and when entire countries moved and changed their borders; it's also the time of an end of the old order, and an often forcible move to the new. Huelle's Pomerania and Poland are places worth visiting, and Moving House & Other Stories provides an excellent opportunity to do so.
The collection, originally titled as Opowiadania na Czas Przeprowadzki (literally Stories for the time of House Moving has been translated into English by Michael Kandel, and published in 1993 by Mariner Books as Moving House & Other Stories.

Standardowo zapomniałam dodać ocenę xddd generalnie zakochałam się w stylu Huellego i na pewno będę chciała zapoznać się z jeszcze jakąś pozycją. Daję 4 gwiazdki ze względów czysto subiektywnych - nie czuję takiej miłości, żeby dać 5 - ale to naprawdę wybitne opowiadania, pełne refleksji, trochę oniryczne, a przede wszystkim stawiające pytania: o tożsamość, o miejsce, w którym żyjemy, o narodowość, o przynależność, o dom.

Dziecięca perspektywa działa jako zwierciadło, w którym odbija się zarówno piękno codzienności, jak i traumy dorosłych. Zdecydowanie najlepsze opowiadanie to ,,Wuj Henryk” oraz ,,Przeprowadzka”

I am not usually a fan of short stories, preferring to lose myself in a longer experience, but these stories were so beautifully written, so dense with atmosphere and so gripping that in a way it was like reading 6 short novels. I would never have picked the book up if it hadn't been for the fact that my son gave me a copy of "Castorp" in Polish some time ago, which was too hard fro me to read easily, and sowhen I saw this book I thought I would try it and see what I was missing. I think I will now go back to the Polish original and have another go.
Huelle in this volume writes about post war Poland - in the recent German owned/occupied lands and the effects of the war on the local people. That sounds very trite, and not at all what I intend to get across, so I will stop there.

Compilation of short stories; some I liked, some I didn't. Well-chosen wording.

I just wasn't very captivated by the stories. The last one was the most interesting. Not sure if it's the author or me.

Ze smutkiem musze napisac, ze nie bylem zachwycony ta kolekcja opowiadan. "Przeprowadzka" owszem bardzo mi sie spodobala, ale reszta mnie nie wciagnela. Byc moze styl Huelle nie jest dla mnie, bo mojej Mamie sie jego ksiazki bardzo podobaja.
