A baby comes into the world with primal longings to be held, to be fed, to sleep, to be changed. Babies don’t worry if it’s a good idea to cry out in the middle of the night or wonder if now is a good time for their moms to respond. They simply roar out their need until they are heard.
Our longings continue into our adult lives. We long to be chosen. We long to have control. We long for happiness. We long to be loved. We long to know God cares for us and that we matter. But when we don’t “roar out” our needs until they are met, what do we do? And when our longings are met by anything other than God, why is there an even greater ache that remains?
In The Longing in Me, Sheila Walsh explains how each of us has a sacred ache within us—a longing for the very heart of God. She draws on the biblical example of David, the greatest king Israel ever had, who was known as “a man after God’s own heart.” Yet at times even David had frustrations, doubts, and worries about his situation. “O Lord, how long will you forget me?” he wrote. “Forever? How long will you look the other way?” (Psalm 13:1 nlt).
David’s life paints a portrait of the longings we all share but also how we can channel those longings in a way that brings us closer to God. His life also shows us that no matter how great our longing is for God, it will never compare to the depth of his great longing for us!
The Longing in Me will help you find the one true source who can meet your deepest longings and give you real tools to help you heal from the past and find joy today.

This study guide accompanies both the 6-part DVD/videos and the book with the same title. I accessed the videos via Study Gateway which is associated with Harper Collins Christian publishing.
The videos were excellent quality. Ranging from 17 to 22 minutes Sheila Walsh identified a particular longing that we all possess whether we're a believer or not. The six featured in the videos were:
1. Longing to be Chosen 2. Longing for Protection 3. Longing for Control 4. Longing for Happiness 5. Longing for God's Grace 6. Longing for God Alone
This is a study directed towards women but I was drawn to it because I'd recently heard Sheila speak at my church and thought she was a very anointed preacher and this study focused on the life of King David. I'm presently spending a lot of time in the Psalms and thought this would be a good study to add to my time in the Psalms.
And I wasn't disappointed. Through personal reflection, Sheila uses the life of David to demonstrate these longings.
Each of the six sessions is broken into 2 sections: a study of the video and a separate study of the book. The book covers more longings than the six in the videos. The video questions are written on the basis that your working through them in a group, however, I did them as an individual. I expect this would be an excellent study to work through in a small group. There is a practical exercise to do each week which is comprehensive with the intent each person would report back to the group the following week.
There is also a separate exercise at the end of the "book" section that has you reflect on one of David's Psalms. I found this a very useful way of finishing each session.
All of the questions are challenging and thought-provoking. Sheila also makes reference to a number of other commentators like Dallas Willard, Eugene Peterson and Ruth Haley Barton that I very much appreciated.
This is an excellent study that I recommend highly.
