3.5 stars, actually.

I am a little torn with this one, to tell you the truth. I went into it liking the main couple: Irish Colin and Anna and their demon-fighting ways in Louisiana. The story hooked me in with the question of their need for secrecy and the delicious romanticism of Colin's love for Anna.

I also liked how there was just the inklings of a greater problem and world building of demons and angels inherent in the strange demons that Colin and Anna were all of a sudden fighting.

That part was great.

And then just as a human gets turned into a demon and their Hunter friend Luca shows up, things really start getting interesting....and the story was over.

Yep, it's the length of the story that lost this one half a star, otherwise its 4 star. The length of the story keeps this from satisfactorily resolving anything: the romance, the greater problems, the reasons for the demon changes, etc. etc. I wanted about 100 more pages to develop the story.

For some, this might not be a problem. I realize that indie published stuff can go by different rules. But for me, I wanted more in this first book.

Meh is perhaps the best I can say about this. And it’s never a good start when that is the first thing I can think of to say about the first novel in a series. But hey, at least it’s short. It’s not awfully written, but it’s by no means great either; in fact I’d struggle to even go as far as good. It’s absolutely safe to say that there is certainly no linguistic flair hiding within the pages. It’s all rather dry and lifeless in brutal honesty - lots of demons get their asses kicked, lots of characters obsessed by sex, main character is apparently wonderfully caring and yet acts more like a paranoid jackass.

To make the whole thing that little bit more annoying, the characters had nothing that drew me into their lives. In fact, the main characters instinctive reaction to anything he doesn’t like is to want to punch it. That was actually quite entertaining when Mira Grant did it, but this author just doesn’t have the flair to make it anything but juvenile... The love story is a strange combination of boring and disturbing; I don’t know where the current fascination with writing paranoid and control freak males and pretending it’s romantic, but I don’t like it. Following someone when they don’t realise – particularly when you can already see out of their damn eyes anyway – is not romantic, it is stalkerish and authors really need to stop with it.

The writing is repetitive and didactic. The author tells rather than shows and for such a short book there were a lot of moments where I had to force myself not to skim read; the only reason I succeeded was because I knew it was so short. The characters are barely fleshed out - other than the fact that we know everybody’s sex drive is working as the author is determined to ram it down your throat that they are all red blooded and horny. All of the male characters seem to be ruled by their dicks. Motivations are repeated inanely, character thoughts are hammered at you, the mind talking tells you nothing that you don’t get from their speech and the entire thing is in reality weak as hell.

The skipping backwards and forwards in time was also messy and purposeless. It’s almost like flashbacks, but flashbacks are meant to be interesting or at least bring something of use to the story and none of these fit that criteria. Then of course you have the surrealism, which is so heavily shovelled on, the author needed to lend you her pitchfork to dig your way back out. A novel this length should be tightly written and this simply doesn’t deliver the goods. It feels like the author had a random idea, put words to paper but missed all of the important steps - like proof reader or editing or not relying on a weak romance to carry a novel. If they had then maybe this wouldn’t be as disjointed, messy and ultimately utterly boring.

As a final point, and possibly the straw that breaks the camel’s back, the book quite literally ends in the middle. I’m not joking. There is not attempt to finish the narrative arc at all, instead the author just tails off at a random point. I can only assume is a ploy to get you to buy the next book. That’s just shoddy writing though. More fool me however; I bought the collection on kindle and will therefore give the second in the series a shot... if only because it is in reality the second half of the first book and because I have already paid for it. If it’s as lacklustre, thin and uninspiring as the first instalment however it may be the last I do read of this author.

I tried. And, yeah I gave up. Everything that was wrong with the first book is still wrong with the second book. Writing is repetitive, bland and insipid. Characters are limp and uninteresting. Plot is boring as hell. There is no improvement at all. Not a fan.

Husband-and-wife team Anna and Colin are immortal demon hunters given unique gifts by an Angel. The Angel sends them to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where some particularly strange and nasty demons are wreaking havoc. The catch is that the pair must pretend not to know one another, which is highly difficult for both, since they haven’t been apart in over four hundred years. While there, they meet up with another group of hunters and things start taking a dire turn.

I liked the premise of this book. Demon hunters with a past and compassion and love provide a sharp contrast to the violence and hate they must deal with when hunting demons who congregate in areas of misery. Anna and Colin are interesting characters, although Colin’s immaturity shows as his bouts of jealousy are easily triggered.

The story is fast paced and slips back in time quite often to reveal some of the experiences the couple have endured over the centuries. For me, there was far too much backstory and not enough fleshing out of their current situation. For instance, we don’t find out why the demons are gathering in Baton Rouge in the first place, or why they have new ways of hiding. We’re not even given any real clues. Unfortunately, none of this is resolved in the end. Just below the last paragraph, the author states that books two, three, and four are only available as a boxed set, but at a reduced price. Sorry, but I’m not a fan of this strategy to sell more books, although I’m sure others won’t mind. It’s a matter of personal preference, right?

I really enjoyed this book. It moved at a slower pace than most of the UF I have read, but it still kept me interested. I liked the fact that the author revealed the main characters background in flashbacks instead of spending time authors the beginning just explaining things. I loved the way that angels were portrayed as secretive and not being able to influence the world around them outright. It felt more honest and true somehow. Demons are evil, and as such they create havoc. Angels are good, and fighting and killing demons would make them bad. I even loved the cliffhanger ending. The author picked the perfect place to end the story and have it pick up in the next book. I loved how the violence wasn't described in gory detail, and neither were the few sex scenes. I can't wait to move on to book 2!

Didnt get the connection and the back and forth in time just wasnt my cup of tea..

**I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book**
This is my honest review.

I had to force myself to read the first book, and that's where I hit the breaks. It just wasn't for me.
The jumping back and forth made it extra difficult for me.
I loved the details around the story itself, but I didn't get a connection with the characters, which was a real deal breaker for me.

The story is really good, but I was sad to find out that it wasn't executed as well as I had hoped.
At the start I felt like I was lost because I was missing stuff, like with the characters.
I don't feel like I got an introduction, and that felt weird. (That's probably also why I felt lost and why I couldn't find a connection with the characters. )

Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy!!

Colin and Anna are semi immortal demon hunters and their latest mission is their toughest yet. They are sent to Louisiana to join a group of hunters but they have to pretend like they don't know one another. This is very difficult for them as they have been basically inseparable for hundreds of years. Now it seems like the demons are getting stronger and specifically targeting them

The idea of this story seemed good but I just didn't love how it was written. I think there were too many flashbacks that didn't bring enough to the story. I am told how much Colin and Anna love each other but I didn't feel it because of how disjointed the story was...it just didn't work for me.

A very nice demon hunter book.

This book is just as much about demon hunting as it is a romance book. Maybe more so as it is not so much a romance as it is a deep and abiding love story between two immortals...who hunt demons. It is a good story with great characters. I believe the author did a very good job on giving the characters and the scenes life. I liked it even though the end of the book was a little disappointing because it had a cliffhanger feel to it and not a clear ending.

This was a story about an immortal couple who are demon hunters. Well, that's it. Other than explaining the 500+ hundred years history of Colin and Anna, the story is just them fighting demons along with their other demon hunters, Dylan, Jeremy and Max. A demon seemed intent on breaking the bond between Colin and Anna but it's such a strong bond.

It was too Christian for me. I didn't know this until I started reading. Other than that, it would have a great potential.

Intriguing

Intriguing story! Add a bit of paranormal with a dash of history stir in a husband and wife who are “immortal” and the result is a well written novel with likable characters who kick some demon butt.

It definitely ended in a cliffhanger- so beware! Overall, this one drew me in and then left me wanting more.

Great Story.. Demons, Angels, Immortals, and Hunters

I loved Colin and Anna's story. How and why they became immortal and entered and agreement to become demon hunters. The friends and enemies they make over their long lives. Looking forward to more about them.

More than Demon Hunters

Story keeps you on the edge of your seat, trying to figure out hope the demon hunters can win against so many types of beings. Also wondering about why they were chosen, and how they can beat new demons. Can't wait for next book

Finally finished it!

The book was okay, kind of long and dragged a bit. I felt like I only stubbornly finished it. I think the concept of immortality could have been explored more and that would have kept my interest.

An interesting read on demon hunters, sort of. Character development is ok, plot moves along sluggishly but at least no major grammar issues.

Colin and Anna have been searching for demons for nearly 400 years. They've agreed to the task for 500 years. The demons have suddenly gotten a lot tougher to hunt and kill.

Worth reading

What a great 1st in a series book about demon hunters. Collin and Anna are Immortals and this book highlights how they got where they are and do what they do! Splendid!

I like the storyline in this series so I'll probably move onto book two. The fight scenes could use some work. I found them missing a great deal and going back to reread them, thinking id missed something. They're demon hunters - fighting is what it should be about....

Title: The Immortals
Author: S.M. Schmitz
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Format: Ebook
Pages: 150
Rating: 4
Heat: 1

Main Characters: Anna, Colin

Thoughts: The beginning leaves you with many questions but as the book progresses everything becomes clear, or at least most things do. It’s a basic story of demon hunters protecting the ignorant human race with a bit of a twist, some hunters are immortal but only for so long. It’s a nice twist that makes this story just slightly different from other demon hunting stories that I’ve read. And I love how Colin and Anna became hunters, such a beautiful love story. I look forward to continuing the series to find out what happens.

A book wrapped with history and paranormal.

Anna and Colin are immortals. Immortal with gifts for the purpose of hunting demons. This story has some historical references that help add depth to the storyline, theme, and characters. How Colin and Anna receive their gifts is not different from other immortals but they are the only two that are different because they have always hunted together.

Interesting

This is one of the few fiction novels which comes close to the truth. Most pretty up the ugliness, that a fallen angel better known as a demon, really is. They ain't nice folks but most writers portray them as if they were.

This book seemed to have really good potential. I made it the chapters and was annoyed. The writing was bland and I felt like there was this big secret why Anna and Colin couldn't be together. I didn't find out and didn't care to know. whatever the reason, it seemed to be stupid.
