Book: Hidden In Shadows: A Fae And Vampire Romance (Book 1) (Shadow Court Chronicles: Faerie Series) Author: Claire Grimes Publication Date: 9/17/2015 Reviewed by: Tammy Payne- Book Nook Nuts My Rating: 3 Stars
REVIEW New to me author. At first, I thought I was re-reading a book by another author as so many things are similar but it is not so no worries there :) I liked the story but the flow well it lost me from the get go as there is just too much going on too soon. The bad: Too many repeats and too much going on with too many beings. I found myself being lost throughout the storyline. The characters were ok. I think with more thought and some more editing this book could be much better.
I was given this book to read in exchange for an honest review. This book is extremely fast paced (which I LOVE)... but I wish it was longer. The characters are interesting, well developed. They grow very quickly on you and your heart. The author allows for great s t change and growth amongst her characters (both literally and figuratively)!! There's no love story YET, but room has been left for a romantic relationship to develop between Lyssandra nd Vincent. I can't wait for the next book! If you're looking g for a new series to fall in love with and get hooked to...then this book and series is a must read.
This was my first book by Claire Grimes and as an avid reader of paranormal romance and urban fantasy, it was a fast, easy read. The storyline was not only able to quickly grab my attention, but more importantly, it was able to keep it.
Maguis is a good villain because right from the first page I sympathized with Lyss and wanted to strangle him. I can't wait for Lyss to exact her revenge and I hope she comes up with something good because Maguis deserves the worst.
Kieran and Lyss' relationship was sweet and I loved how he always comforts her and takes care of her while she worries for him. If it had not been for the fact that he was a grown man when she met him as a child, I would have loved to see something develop between them. However, that small fact would make a relationship between them be... strange to say the least. I was constantly forgetting this throughout the book and had to remind myself because they seem the same age and more like best friends.
I am a sucker for hot vampires with a troubled past so liking Vincent was a no brainer for me. I know this was a short story, but I feel like I didn't find out enough about Vincent. I felt like I was introduced to him but that was it. I didn't have a good grasp on his personality by the end of the book. However, I did like what I saw from him, but it makes me want to know so much more!
I also felt that Lyss and Vincent's relationship came out of no where. I got the impression that they really didn't care for each other but they had to work together. Then they randomly seemed to have a connection and were worrying about each other's safety and it was more than the duty to help an ally. I felt more interaction between them needed to happen so that their connection could seem more believable and understandable.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS:
I will be reading the next book in the Shadow Court Chronicle series. The location is vague but a cheap motel in the United States is where our heiress runs when a coup happens at the court of Fae. She's just got married in a political alliance to unite the courts, and suspects her new husband of already trying to poison her. Then her bodyguard is getting her out fast, and through the portal to America. The snappish protagonist, for all she is over a hundred years old, does very little in this tale, just stomping around giving orders and calling upon a goddess. Easy when you are well protected. Only at the end does she decide to go for a battle. I see no reason whatsoever for incorporating vampirism, which is not in the fae legends.
I have been looking for a good book to read. I haven't really had anything awesome to read in a while and I was becoming frustrated. When I saw this book was about the fae and vampires, I was hopeful. I really like both of those subjects so this book looked right up my alley. I don't know about you, but I know within the first few pages if a book is going to be one I'm really interested in. I started reading this book and was immediately invested in the story. I read it straight through in a matter of hours and was sad when it ended. I liked the heroine immensely. She's a a princess but she's definitely not one of THOSE princesses. She has a red cap bodyguard and she fights right along side of him. She is just as viscous as him.
The book starts out on her wedding day. She has entered a loveless marriage for political reasons. From the next page on, the book flies. There's a fight, a coup, a witch, a vampire , a goddess and much more. Secrets are revealed. There are betrayals. There are battles. There is a hint of a romance. Its a lot for a book that is less than 100 pages long.
The book is titled A Fae and Vampire Romance but honestly there wasn't too much romance. I'm fine with that really. I like my books to be fantasy with a little romance mixed in as opposed to pure paranormal romance. My only, only complaint in the book was the relationship between the Princess Lyssandra and the vampire Vincent, went from 0 to like a 9 and I felt like a missed it. He practically hated her, they had one almost nice conversation. and the next thing you know its like they are on a whole new level.. I actually went back in the book and thought I missed a few pages. But again that's my only complaint.
This book was really interesting and I'm sorry it came to an end. It is a short book and it does state that above, so don't be surprised (like I was because I didn't read! lol ) ! . Hopefully the next book comes out asap, I cant wait to read more about this world and these characters.
I received this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This is my honest opinion!
A fast paced adventure sure to have you wanting more!!
This story isn't full of glitter fairy dust and sparkling vampires.
You follow the just crowned Seelie/Unseelie queen Lyss. You realize her husband is a giant prick who tries to kill her before their honeymoon night and begin to root for her immediately. She has an awesome bodyguard Keiran who is a red cap and will die for her.
The story takes a sad turn of events as you see the dear husband has decided to get rid of everyone including Lyss and her fAmily but thankfully, she comes out somewhat okay. I don't want to give any spoilers but she finds out she is WAY more than just a simple Queen of the Seelie/Unseelie court alliance.
With the help of a spunky imp named Sam and a hotter than the sun nightfall, Lyss begins to find out who she really is and where her true family roots are. I do love how she isn't just a frilly princess but she has her soft moments while still being able to be stubborn and strong. A great heroine to the story!
I recommend buying this and the second book together because even though there isn't specifically a cliffhanger, you are going to want to know more!
I was given this book by the author for and honest review. Princess Lysandra wedding night , her new husband tries to poison her. Her guard Kieran comes crashing into her room and says they have to get out of there, because the Fae courts are killing each other. They go threw a port hole to get to earth. They find out that her new husband is the King of both of the Fae courts and her whole family is dead except her baby brother. Now she has everyone searching for her and has to go into hiding. Someone she knows send her Vincent who is a vampire, to help watch over her. There's a lot of gruesome fighting to stay alive. There's a traitor that keeps telling the king where they are, which keeps them on th run, with a lot of action. Totally enjoyed reading this. It's fast, action packed, strained emotions and lots of bloody fights. I LIKE IT!!!!!!
3.5 star. I have to say this is the third book that I have read about the Seelie and Underlie Fae court. I have to say this was a interesting read. Sad that the connection between Lyss and Vincent was so fast considering the emotional detachment they both had for 3/4 of the book. That is my only problem with it. Another reviewer stated why not go for the red cap well I can see why, it would be like dating your uncle. I mean the guy was full grown when he came to be Lyss body guard, plus I'm pretty sure he is ugly. Other than that Lyss is a bada$$ and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. The author contacted me considering my reviews of another book asking for me to give this a try. So I did and really liked it. There were some grammar and formatting errors but my review does not reflect that. Let's go Lyss you are destined for great things. Plus Vincent yeah yummy.
Lyssandra is an unseelie princess in the Winter Court. Someone is out to kill her and she is determined to reclaim her birthright. There's only one problem—She doesn't exactly know what that birthright entails. Obtaining that information comes with a hefty price, but save her family, she must. Circumstances leave her no choice.
This is a fun, action-filled story that touches the depths of Fae legend. Grimes has a smooth writing style that leaves you craving for more. If you like strong character development and a story that keeps moving forward, this will be a real treat.
I'm curious to see what happens with Vincent in the next installment of this series, and how Lyssandra intends to pay her debt.
This was a first time read for me from this author and it could not have started better. I was quickly pulled into this story and as soon as I found out there was another in the series already released I had to get it to read. I can't wait for the next release in this series and see how everything turns out!! This talented author has definitely made my 'watch for new releases' list and I will certainly be picking up some of her earlier books.
This is an exciting action packed read with treachery, deception, murder and mayhem. She just got married and he just tried to kill her. She will get her revenge and hopefully save her little brother. Now she has to figure out who betrayed her and gave away her hiding place. This is a fun entertaining story. Enjoy I did.
I really love Lyssandra. She is funny in a sarcastic way, and she is kick ass. I love ready books about women who kick ass. This is the first book of Claire Grimes that I've read. It won't be the last, I'll definitely be read this whole series.
It wasn't too bad. If you want completely fleshed out fantasy Canon pass this by; it is a Hershey's miniature when you are wanting a King Size bar. A very fluffy and quick read for a cold, wet winter's night.
I find myself wishing that I had the next book in the series. This was a great story and I definitely will be buying the rest of the series. I must know if Vincent and Lyssandra meet again. And I absolutely have to know if she saves her little brother and makes her husband pay for his betrayal.
Great Book love the way the author made me feel like I was there .You are going to have to go read the book and see what you think about the book. Thank you for letting me read the book I Love it . Thank you from Patricia
This is a great start to a series. Cassandra is great and funny. Vincent the sexy vamp is awesome and Kierin the red cap is strong and steady. I can't wait for book two.
I loved reading this Fae paranormal action packed book. Lyssandra was a unique character with a hidden twist. I can't wait to read more of the series to find out about the Redcap and Vincent.
Whilst this book was reasonably well written and quite an interesting concept, nothing seemed to happen. I understand this is the first book in a series but it was short and everything seemed rushed and skipped over. You don't see much action at all. In fact, the heroine doesn't see any action except for at the very end. She seems to miss it all. There's not so much depth, or background. I also struggled to follow the relationship between Lyss and Vincent. When did there become a relationship? They're strangers and suddenly they're confessing love. I felt like I missed something, and one of the best bits of a novel with a love story is... the love story. It seemed like it was included more because it had to be than because Grimes wanted to include it. Quite disappointed, but Grimes definitely has potential.

First time I have read any of this author, and while I’m not jumping up and down saying I gotta buy all of her books. I enjoyed this one and will read more from her. I do think it’s a tiny bit disjointed in the store line. But maybe that’s because I was reading it in bits and drabs as I caught time during my work day.
I liked this book very interesting story it was short I didn't like the way it ended I wish it gave more info about the relationship that was starting to develop between Lyssa and Vincent but I'm hooked can't wait to read the next installment I would recommended this book to anyone
I downloaded Hidden In Shadows for free and paid the small additional fee for the audible narration. While the book itself is pretty good for the start of a series, I have to say that the audible narration is definitely not the best out there. It was quite obvious where different sessions were pieced together due to a fluctuation in the volume. Even so, I quite enjoyed the introduction to the Fae Vampire world of the Shadow Court Chronicles: Faerie series. At times I found it somewhat reminiscent of another well-known author’s Fae courts and the animosity between the different courts. But that’s as far as the similarities go.
Right from the get go you are thrown into the devious machinations of assassination attempts, court coups, and a hidden destiny. While Lyssandra appears to be an arrogant Unseelie princess full of her superiority to her Seelie prince husband Magius, she soon comes to realize that he has been hiding his very dark deviousness beneath the perception of light given the Seelie court. On the run, Lys’ allies are in short numbers and other than her trusty red cap defender there is no one she can really trust. Then she acquires, Vincent a nightwalker as her secondary guard. There is an attraction between them but when Lyssandra’s destiny as the heir to the Shadow Court is revealed the potential for major dissent is stirred as well.
The action and adventure is great in Hidden In Shadows. This new series shows promise… enough to have me purchasing the balance of the series. This one barely scratches the surface of a possible romance between Vincent and Lys but I’m looking forward to seeing where the rest of the series takes them. If you enjoy urban fantasy with a paranormal bent you’ll enjoy this one. *****Reviewed for Xtreme-Delusions*****
The opening book in this series provides an interesting and fresh story of Fae empire and Nightwalkers, creatures similar to vampires. When young Unseelie princess Lyssandra survives attack on her life and is roughly pulled into fae political games by her husband, she certainly has no idea what other revelations could her hunt for information and fight for survival bring. Passion, friendship, alliances and betrayal are inevitable components of a fantasy story. However, I struggled first to feel the connection and chemistry between Vincent and Lyssandra, although it was raised in the end. I am curious how will their fates develop in the next books. I very much liked Lyssandra´s stubbornness and determination to survive the hunt and do possible to find justice. The road to achieving her goal is long and complicated, but together with her companions she might be able to fulfill the harsh task. I see potential in the series and I am looking forward to read the next book.
Action packed, fast paced, intrigue and betrayal is just some of what kept me on the edge of my seat... I had to read this incredible and intense story right through..... The human world knows that there are paranormals around, but they don't have any idea of what that truly entails or the different levels involved. There are "Seelie".." Unseelie"..and the " Shadow Court"... Princess Lyssandra (Unseelie) has been wed to Prince Maguis (Seelie) to bring peace between the two Fae worlds.... But there is something else going on here that's going to change everything, and I mean every single thing that Lyssandra believes.... her world, her family, her abilities, her husband's real intentions, heck,.. her own origins, just a name a few are not what they seem to be...but they are going to have an impact one way or another on deciding whether or not she even survives what is coming....
This novella sets the stage for the rest of the series. I liked it well enough, but found more typos than I expected...shoddy editing! Won't give away spoilers, but this should appeal to fans of the Fae world in Laurell K Hamilton's Merry Gentry series. I may take up the series in future to see where it goes.
A short and quick read. Lots of action packed in this one sitting read. It felt like a short story to a longer story. Many secrets are reveled and many more to come- I'm sure. The story was alright but I wish there was more to it.
