Just another of those hs who are supposedly so tough and independent, who look adversity in the face and overcome it - til she meets her old crush(/husband), the manhoe aka the H. And then she's all wet-noodles limp and (excuse my French) wet.

A separation of 15 years. A moc between two very young ppl. A secret pregnancy. The h waits for him and then turns somewhat bitter while he moves on with his life. Because for him, it wasn't a real wedding but then why consummate it?
And he doesn't even have the amnesia excuse. He remembers most other women and names a few too while trying to place her. Can a woman be more humiliated?
And he cannot say/think like -“She was like a song whose melody he'd remembered, but the lyrics remained forgotten.
Until now.”

Because he's also thinking -
“My wife, he thought. If only for tonight.” (This - in the present but can fit the past too.)

This story has many of my best-liked elements (of moc, mus, separation, secret kid and adventure) and the author could have made it perfect by making the h more resilient - of his smarmy charms (I hate men who wink and waggle their brows) and not so easily forgiving/ understanding of his love-and-leave reasons/excuses. Yes, she's 'feisty' and resists and rebels but not for long.
And it's not just the H who's so patronizing and dismissive, but also her son who reacts indulgently to her objections making her look like an overreacting, overly-emotional female.

The H makes the same mistakes over and over again. His small boy excuse? My boo-boos are bigger and more important and I've zero maturity/understanding of life and zilch coping mechanisms so I'll ruin your life (repeatedly) along with mine. And let down our son alongwith.

"Lucky" Logan Grey is a man who is haunted by the tragedies of his past. Though newspapers have dubbed him the "luckiest man in Texas" because of his mysterious ability to sense, and ward off, trouble before it occurs Logan knows his luck is anything but good.

Caroline Kilpatrick fell in love with Logan Grey the first time she saw him at the tender age of 8. He was the first boy to kiss her and nine years later he was the 18 year old louse who married her, bedded her and rode away the next morning without looking back. Unbeknownst to Caroline, he'd been hired by her father to marry his daughter in a fake ceremony in order to give her father access to Caroline's inheritance.

Fifteen years later... Logan finds himself in the middle of a bank robbery. He's frantically trying to form a plan to save the hostages when a gorgeous woman slips him a gun then proceeds to help him stop the robbery. Logan is stunned, mystified and totally captivated by the beautiful stranger but when he turns to thank her after the robbers have been subdued she's nowhere to be found.

Caroline Kilpatrick is furious! After traveling to Fort Worth with one goal in mind, to find Logan Grey, the last man in the world she wants to see, and convince him to help her rescue her beloved foster father from the outlaw-infested Black Shadow Canyon then helping him foil the bank robbery, the "lying, rotten, no-good, low-life, snake-breath, dirt-eating, overstuffed, ignorant, heartless, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed, dog" didn't even recognize her! Truth be told, for reasons only he knows, Logan has purposely blocked Caroline and the years that immediately followed that time of his life from his memory. He has no idea that Caroline's father died two months after the "wedding", leaving her homeless and destitute. He doesn't know that he left Caroline pregnant and is the father of her son, Will, and he sure as shootin' has no idea that the marriage was, in fact, legal and the smart, feisty, gorgeous woman who helped him foil the bank robbery is his wife!

So begins another terrific historical Texas romance from the incomparable Geralyn Dawson who has delighted readers with her many adventurous and heartwarming stories. In this first book of her new "The Good Luck Grooms" series, Dawson leads Caroline and Logan on a tumultuous journey that risks their lives and tests their resolve as they face down killer tornadoes and killer outlaws while searching for their missing loved ones. Even more perilous, perhaps, is their intensely emotional journey of the heart as they rediscover the special, but tenuous bond that has always been between them and that eventually grows into a deep and abiding love. But is love enough for Logan to overcome his fears and stay with his newly found family or will he once again turn his back on Caroline and Will to live the life of the Loner?

Don't miss this fast-paced, action-packed, emotionally satisfying story!

I've been a fan of historical romance as long as I can remember. Usually I go for the glamorous regency era, but this time I decided to try something new. The Loner rises above any expectations that I thought I had. Logan and Caroline take emotions on an adventurous route to romance. March intrigues with danger, tempts with passion and captures hearts with a whirlwind of emotion. I may just have to rethink my stand on western historical romance.

Gotta love Logan. He is big and strong, but he is so afraid to love anyone. Logan has had so much pain and loss in his life and if he were to lose one more loved one, it would kill him. Then Caroline blows into his life and he starts to think that maybe he could have the kind of life he always dreamed about. Caroline drops a bomb on Logan and upends his life. He lets her know right away that he can't give her the kind of life she wants. But, he does want to be around for their son. After a big adventure, Caroline is sure that they will build a life together. Logan thinks differently. She knows she will have to let him go to figure it out for himself. Will he come back or keep running?

I bought this and decided not to read. After reading reviews, I know I won’t like this and it will be upsetting to me. Hero and heroine used to be married, then separated while she had his child in secret, and he went whoring around.

Meet Logan “lucky “ Grey , the man, the myth , the legend! And supposably the Luckiest man in Texas, and a man who is haunted by something in his past.

Caroline first fell in love with Lucky years ago, they even had a “fake ( maybe real) marriage. One that resulted in a son ! However, Lucky doesn’t know this , until the boy is 14 and in trouble .

Caroline shows up 15 years later to ask for Luckys help rescuing their son. This begins the adventure, train rides, gunslingers, tornados, treasure map, lies and truths!

A great read and even better , the start of a brand new series by Geralyn Dawson!

This book has been on my goodreads to-read list for over a decade; I used to enjoy this author quite a bit back in the day. This story, though, just didn't hit the spot. It was set in the 1870s and I felt the dialog was too contemporary to fit. I do not enjoy the "big secret" plot device nor the "I have to lie or he won't..." scheme on the part of the lead female. Other aspects of the story seemed far-fetched, even silly. Obviously my tastes have changed in the last 12 years and though it's not this author's fault, I felt the 2-star "it was okay" rating best described my feelings about this book.

I like the idea of this book, but I just couldn’t get into it. I forced my way through 5 chapters but I just can’t do it anymore. The dialogue doesn’t match the time period at all and there was a lot of repetition. There was also more characters than I could keep up with.

Wow, this book was a wild ride from start to finish! Caroline is a kick ass character from the start, although I certainly don’t agree with some of her choices. She is clearly a lioness when it comes to those she loves. And Logan is wonderful and frustrating and I loved him. Now please excuse me while I go grab the next book in the series....

The Loner (The Bad Luck Brides #4) by Emily March ..This was a wonderful series and thanks to Emily March and the publisher for letting me preview this book. Logan Grey(Lucky)....has a tragic past and works as hired gun sort of like a bounty hunter. Caroline Kilpatrick ..also has a tragedy in her life... She needs his help...there is murder, mystery, kidnapping, lies and half truths, laughter, love, tears(I shed a few) steam and none stop action all getting us to a very HEA. It was great to touch base with friends from the first three books ...but this can be read as a stand alone with no problem.

Reasons I enjoyed this book:

This book will be published again by Emily March, also known as Geralyn Dawson. I read the pre-publication book that was sent to me. Yes, it could be a bit different than the original. It continues on with many of the characters involved in the Bad Luck Wedding Dress. It began with a more casual style historical read then headed more into a book that has a more present day writing style. It is a historical fiction but had the notes of Ms. March's present writing style. I enjoyed it. For readers who enjoy Emily March and have read this series, you may want to re-read this new publication. If not, the series is a good historical to get into. I appreciate the opportunity to proof this work.

Wow! I loved reading this book!
It's an exciting, thrilling, sexy, funny
& moving romance.
A horrible tragedy had haunted
Logan, his whole life. Staying very guarded
& closing off his heart.
That is till Caroline, mysteriously
shows up, with surprising news.
It is a well-written story & has beautifully developed characters with some
intense & incredible scenes, that
pulled me in, & kept me reading till
the end!
Highly Recommend!!

Carol lies. Her and Logan's surprise son Will is not in villain hideout Black Shadow Canyon, but old Ben "father of her heart" is. She rants on his sins when she's the one who decided to have baby alone.
Chapters from Logan's viewpoint show he is gullible, honest, loyal to a fault, gives others benefit of the doubt. Twists and surprises go with characters as set out.

Logan Grey and his wife Carolyn are strangers who haven't seen each other for 15 years. She has been raising his son, which the father did not know about. There are killers and robbers and liars. The prose is stilted and elementary but a decent story but too prefabricated.

I totally enjoyed reading Logan and Caroline’s story in The Loner by Emily March; book one in her Good Luck Grooms series but book eight in The Bad Luck Wedding series. Logan Grey had lived a life full of tragedy and vowed to live his life alone. Despite all of the tragedy in his life Logan was called Lucky Logan Grey. Caroline Kilpatrick was not going to allow him to wallow in his thoughts when she confronts him, in front of his friends, and Caroline makes Logan an offer he will not be able to refuse. Together they will battle outlaws, danger, and desire as they seek treasure hidden within Black Shadow Canyon. Hired gunman Logan has built walls around his heart. Caroline is a determined woman despite trouble following her. They have a shared history, one they cannot deny as well as an attraction that is out of control. Caroline is willing to risk everything to convince Logan to stay with her and be a family. Logan is a loner and refuses to stay in one place; or is he? Caroline and Logan are both such strong characters that not much will stop them from pursuing what they set out to accomplish.

Ms. March wrote a wonderfully sweet, emotional and moving story that is not to be missed. It was a story filled with sexual attraction, fun dialogue, and endearing characters giving Logan and Caroline a chance to discover they were meant for each other along with the possibility of a future together. I highly recommend The Loner to other readers and look forward to Emily March’s next book.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

When Geralyn Dawson had her character Caroline Kilpatrick label the hero, Logan Grey, as ‘good for nothing,’ I knew this would be a fun book. However, the first part of the book was v-e-r-y slow.

"Lucky" Logan Grey is endowed with a strong sense of trouble coming and is quick-witted enough to prepare to meet it. By others, he is considered the "luckiest man in Texas" but he knows that he has survived more than his share of tragedies.

During a bank robbery, Caroline slips a weapon to Lucky and helps him stop the raid. Logan is impressed with the lovely woman but she disappears before he can thank her. It is obvious to Caroline that Logan Grey does not remember her – and he should! They were married 15 years before and she has a 14-year-old son to prove it.

When Caroline reenters Logan’s life, she needs his help to save her foster father. But first, she must tell this odious man that they are married and share a son. Logan is absolutely thunderstruck by the news and tells her that her father hired him to undergo a fake marriage.

The plot is complicated and I’ll stop here before giving too much away. Once the story gets going, Caroline and Logan face murderous tornados and murdering thieves aplenty.

This is an enjoyable book with almost too much plot for one book. I liked all three of the main characters – they were real.

Logan "Lucky" Grey is afraid of loss after a tragedy in his early life left him alone. He chooses to live a life with very little to lose from that point on. Living the life of a hired gunman, always on the move, is a perfect way to avoid too many strong attachments.

That goes well for a while, until a strong woman, Caroline, shows up needing his help. He cannot refuse her request and that might be the best decision he ever made.

I generally do not read historical romances. I enjoy contemporary stories much more, but I did enjoy this story so much! I think the reason is that the woman in this book, of this time period, had to be strong to survive the lives they led. They did not wait for a man to be around to save them. They grew up knowing that they had to save themselves and as a result did not shy away from difficult situations.

Reading this book has opened my horizon that I might have been missing some great stories and I will be exploring more out of my comfort zone. I want to thank Emily March for writing this great story, which will lead me to reading more historical western romance books.

I was luckily given an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. My review, which is my own opinion, is not influenced by receiving the ARC.

The Loner by Emily March is a fun, entertaining read that will have you lost in the Wild West for hours. I've been a longtime fan of Emily's but have never read any of her historical books so this was new for me. While I was skeptical about reading a book based in the Wild West of the 1800s, I found myself sucked in by the story that Emily created for her characters, Logan and Caroline. "Lucky" Logan often doesn't feel as lucky as others see him to be and even more so when Caroline shows up claiming to be his legitimate wife that Logan doesn't even remember marrying. An adventure starts for these two and I couldn't help but find myself wanting to keep reading to find out what happens. While the somewhat corny language could be a bit much for me at times, I definitely found myself entertained and enjoying the story that Emily has written. I would recommend this book if you are a fan of historical or western romances for sure as it's quite different from others that I've read of if you're just looking for a fun, light read to escape for awhile.

I thoroughly enjoyed the previous “Bad Luck Wedding” books and fully expected to enjoy “The Loner” one as well. This is book 8 of that series and book 1 of the “Good Luck Groom series”. This story absolutely met all my expectations and more.
Logan “Lucky” Grey doesn’t believe he is lucky at all and is rather grumbly about it. He was dubbed “Lucky” after having survived a tragedy as a child. Caroline Kilpatrick knows Logan from a previous meeting which Logan doesn’t remember until she deliberately confronts him with it.
Caroline has an agenda and all she has to do is convince Logan he has to help her. Twists and turns, murder and mayhem ensue as together they work their way through to a better understanding of what they really mean to each other.
I was given the opportunity to get an advanced reader copy of this book in return for an honest review. I did enjoy this one just as I did all the earlier books. Emily March provides a fun and entertaining story, good reading!! Thank you

If you enjoy the American West, particularly Texas, during the late 1800s, then you’ll love THE LONER, Book 9 in Emily March’s The Bad Luck Wedding Series.

Our hero Logan Grey rejects that title. He’s gained a reputation at the “luckiest man in Texas,” but Logan knows the truth — he’s a fraud. What others consider good luck, he considers bad luck in situations that hurt others.

Caroline Kilpatrick hopes to use Logan’s luck to help her rescue the most important man in her life. Although sparks fly when Caroline is around Logan, she has no intention of having a relationship beyond her quest.

Of course, the best laid plans rarely work out.

Watching these two prickly characters come together was a delight. Their journey is not smooth, and March throws in plenty of twists.

This book can stand alone, but you will meet characters from earlier books in the series. You’ll find yourself wanting to go back and read (or re-read) those earlier titles.

Emily March creates real characters. This book is part of the "Bad Luck" series, so it's nice to get to catch up with some of the characters I've already read about in previous books. This story is about Logan and Caroline. It's set in the 1800's. Logan has had a lot of tragedy in his life, but is considered very "Lucky". He has friends, but is basically a Loner. Caroline is someone from his past and comes to him for help when she has some trouble. There's lots of action in this story, which I really like. Seeing how these two come together and really get to know each other is entertaining. Caroline is very strong and independent, which are very refreshing qualities in the female lead. It looks like this is gonna be a series, so I'm excited to read the other books. I enjoyed this story a lot =)

This was actually a really good book. I am not normally into suspenseful, murder mystery romances stories.... but this one flowed perfectly and kept my interest the whole way thru. The characters were all well written and likeable people. I did find myself stopping often to wonder what time period this book was taking place. It seemed more modern than historical to me. (they talked about having bathrooms with showers, telephones, and just modern lingo) I did check and it looks to be early 1900's. I guess I am just used to 1800's era. Either way, it was a well written book and I will check out her other books for sure.

Logan or Lucky as people like to call him doesn’t considered himself lucky in the least. All his life he has felt unlucky and surrounds himself with short term relationships, homes and women. Little does he know that he will need to all the good luck he can get because his wife just arrived in town and the news she bring will will test his luck to it’s fullest. Logan and Caroline embark in a dangerous journey and even after everything goes right and Logan wins the girl he still doesn’t see he has always been Lucky and has to hurt himself in order to see the truth. The book is what i consider a page turner. Every chapter is full of surprises and every new surprise leads to new adventures.

I was given an Arc of this book thanks to Emily. I love reading books that are a part of a series as the story seems to go on forever. THE LONER is a book in the Bad Luck Wedding series. Logan was orphaned at a young age and lost a wife and child as an adult. He is afraid of being a part of a family that he might lose again. When he finds out that he is still married to Caroline (from what was supposed to be a fake wedding) and has a son, he can’t find it in himself to stay with his family. Caroline is a strong woman, determined to protect her family. I enjoyed reading as their relationship developed and Logan realized that he didn’t have to be a loner forever.

This is part of the Good Luck Grooms series. Set in East Texas, 1871, this book has a little bit of everything: tragedy, lots of humor, suspense... I'm a hug fan of this author! She's one of the few historical romance authors I read (she also writes contemporary romance).

The hero is a hired gunman with walls around his heart. The heroine is a determined woman with trouble on her trail. They have a history they can't deny, and an attraction the can't control. What they need is a run of good luck.... YES, I did kinda copy that from the back cover...

The plot in this one is a little over the top, but it's fun and I devoured the book. It's a Western. There are shoot outs and tornadoes and a lot of sassy women. Caroline is a good heroine; she's got a spine and a fierce independent streak that comes across as genuine and admirable rather than stubborn and annoying, as is so often the case with "strong" romance heroines. Logan is attracted to that part of her, so it makes sense when they team up for a crazy mission to find members of Caroline's family that have gone missing. It's not a flawless book, but it was a really fun read.
