Soutines letzte Fahrt

Chaim Soutine, der weißrussisch-jüdische Maler und Zeitgenosse von Chagall, Modigliani und Picasso, fährt am 6. August 1943 in einem Leichenwagen versteckt von der Stadt Chinon an der Loire ins besetzte Paris. Die Operation seines Magengeschwürs ist unaufschiebbar, aber die Fahrt dauert aufgrund der Umwege – um die Kontrollposten der Besatzungsmacht zu meiden – viel zu lange, nämlich 24 Stunden.
In einem Strom bizarrer Bilder, die der verfolgte Maler im zeitweiligen Morphin-Delirium vor sich auftauchen sieht, erzählt der Roman halb historisch, halb fiktiv Episoden aus Soutines Kindheit in Smilowitschi bei Minsk, die ersten Malversuche in Wilna, den beharrlichen Traum von Paris, der Welthauptstadt der Malerei. Er beschwört die unwahrscheinliche Freundschaft mit Modigliani, den plötzlichen Erfolg und das Ende der goldenen Pariser Jahre.
Der Maler, der an die Macht der Milch als einziges Heilmittel glaubt, fährt aber auch in ein »weißes Paradies«, eine Mischung von Klinik und Gefängnis, in der es zu merkwürdigen Begegnungen und Ereignissen kommt. Ein mysteriöser »Gott in Weiß« erklärt ihn für geheilt, verbietet ihm aber das Malen. Doch in einem Paradies ohne Malerei ist dem Künstler nicht zu helfen. Er beginnt heimlich wieder zu malen – und ist bereit, dafür den geforderten Preis zu zahlen …

Essayiste, il est l'auteur de Europas zarte Hände, 1995, et Nichts als Wunder. Essays über Poesie, 2007. Il a traduit du russe et édité les Oeuvres complètes d'Ossip Mandelstam en dix volumes aux éditions Ammann à Zurich. Il a également consacré quatre livres au poète russe, dont une biographie intitulée Mandelstam, Mon temps, mon fauve, que Le Bruit du temps publiera en 2011 en coédition avec La Dogana.

Fact
Chaïm Soutine (1893-1943), Jewish, was born in Smilavichy, Belarus. In 1913 he arrived in Paris, where he mixed with many of the famous Montparnasse artists, but one of the people closest to him was the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) who died of tubercular meningitis in Paris. Modigliani had painted several portraits of Soutine, one of which he famously painted (possibly spur of the moment) on Léopold Zborovski, their art dealer’s, door. Several of the impoverished artists, including Soutine, lived in La Ruche.*

The vehicle for telling the tale is literally a vehicle - a hearse - in which the artist makes his final journey. But before he reaches his destination he makes several mental journeys to his past, places he has been, people (mainly artists) he has known, paintings created (and often destroyed) by him. But why travel in a hearse? The year is 1943, and the Germans control Paris. Soutine had been in hiding from the Germans, but now he needed urgent surgery for the perforated ulcer which was to kill him. So, travelling with him is Ma-Be (Marie-Berthe Aurenche, artist Max Ernst’s ex-wife) who periodically administers morphine. And so, with a random thought here and a flashback there, Soutine reveals his thoughts, his past and his present. For this reader it is like building a jigsaw puzzle. Initially there are only confusing, disparate pieces, but then it starts making sense and the pieces fit nicely together to form a picture of sorts of this artist.
Award winning Swiss author Ralph Dutli** deftly plays with words, blends fact and fiction, and uses a stream-of-consciousness style to present the terminally ill Soutine rambling and hallucinating in his hearse.
“Does he hear all the voices that have spoken to him throughout a lifetime? Where is the recording device located? How inexhaustible is his ear? Or does Sertürner’s poppy juice mix together the memories and the voices, the foreign sounds and his own experiences? Are dubious memories playing tricks on him?”
There are many references to the many artists who lived/worked in Montparnasse during the period between the two world wars, plus artists from a different era and culture such as Rembrandt. Various artworks are mentioned. Colours appear not only in the art, because Dutli’s colourful sentences are filled with colours.

Soutine lived in poverty, but American businessman and art collector Albert C. Barnes,*** upon seeing Soutine’s work, bought every painting he could for a song. In Dutli’s novel it is this painting that he first sees:

I read this book some time back but did not feel up to writing a review that would do it justice. I thought that it deserved an excellent review, so being unable to produce one, I did the next best thing. I recommended it to my NZ buddy, TBV.

Įdomus pasakojimas apie talentingo dailininko likimą nacių okupuotoje Prancūzijoje, bandymas keičiant laiko plotmes priminti žydų kilmės žmogaus siekį tapti išskirtiniu tapytoju. Buvo įdomu skaityti apie Vilnių XIX-XX a., dailininkų bohemą, bendravimą su Pikasu, Modiljaniu.

Savotiškai įdomios formos pasakojimas apie vieno garsiausio litvakų dailininko gyvenimą persmelktas vizijų, fantazijų ir realybės properšų, kuomet nesupranti, kur realybė, o kur morfino sukelti kliedesiai. Daug pasąmonės srauto, kartais šiek tiek per daug, kuris teka ir srūva dailininkui gulint katafalke, pakeliui į Paryžių, į ligoninę, kurio galbūt taip pat net nebuvo. Modiljanis, Kikoinas, Paryžiaus bohema, žydų išeivių ir pabėgelių gyvenimas, viskas telpa atsiminimuose - fantazijose.

L’articolo evidenzia che ci sono poche fonti biografiche su Chaïm Soutine, complicando la comprensione della sua vita.

Labai padrika, sunki istorija. Apie vaikinuką, dailininku tapsiantį, kuris sunkiai leido šaknis žemelėn.
Iš tikrųjų tai esamo laiko nėra daug, Sutinas katafalke keliauja į Paryžiaus ligoninę iš slaptavietės. Jis - žydas, nusikaltęs savo gimimu. Ir visa knygos esmė - jo kelionė katafalke, kuriame pririjęs morfino atmena savo gyvenimą ir leidžia nuoskaudas erdvėn.
Labai sunkiai skaitėsi, man asmeniškai - vienas didelis negatyvas. Apie dailininką, kuris nešnekėjo su žmonėmis, neaušino burnos ir visų nekentė. Naikino savo paveikslus vieną po kito. Apgaudinėjo užsakovus.
Galbūt pažiūrėjau į šią knygą tik vienpusiškai, tačiau manęs nesužavėjo. Nors rašymo stilius tikrai kitoniškas ir išskirtinis.

Originaliai ir jautriai aprašyta istorija, kurios didžioji dalis - neabejotinai - yra tikra. Malonu matyti sąsajas su Vilniumi, kad ir kokios laikinos jos buvo. Knyga taip pat žavi ne tik iš istorinės, bet ir iš meno rinkos perspektyvos - ilgai lauktas pripažinimas ir pagaliau viltis į sotesnį gyvenimą.

Chaimas Sutinas, iš mažo Baltarusijos miestelio kilęs žydų tapytojas, leidžiasi į savo paskutinę kelionę. Katafalku. Jis dar gyvas, bet priešmirtinės klejonės jį jau neša į kitą pasaulį, kur nėra skausmo, bet nėra ir tapybos, jo aistros, ir jo prakeiksmo. Realūs, knygos autoriaus surinkti faktai, maišosi su Sutino mintimis, prisiminimais, klejonėmis, jis mato seniai mirusius draugus, pradingusias mylimąsias, atgyja net jo jau seniai sunaikinti, sudeginti, subadyti, suplėšyti paveikslai.
Perskaičius knygą kilo daug klausimų. Ar įmanomas menas be skausmo, be kančios? Koks menas yra priimtinas? Ar menas turi būti estetiškas? Kada menininkai peržengia ribą, ir ima kenkti ne tik sau, bet ir aplinkiniams? Ar menininkas gali nekęsti to, ką sukūrė?
Nors knyga nedidelė, skaičiau lėtai, vos po keletą puslapių per dieną, kartais per savaitę. Buvo įdomu sužinoti apie menininkų, buvusių meno paraštėse, gyvenimą, aplinką, draugus, netgi sveikatą, kuriai šioje knygoje skirtas atskiras vaidmuo.
Ir visgi, ar geriau gyvenimas be skausmo, be spalvų, be nieko, ar su visais pasaulio padažais?

Книга скоріше стала розчаруванням. Сутін - один з моїх улюблених митців, і побачивши назву я сформував високі очікування. Насправді автору художнього твору, на мій погляд забракло саме художнього бачення.
Частини, що дають біографічні довідки більш цікаві, хоча, враховуючи як детально описаний і бог��мний Париж 1920-х, і похмура смуга осілості початку двадцятого сторіччя, автору мало що є додати по фактажу.
Що ж до спроб створити роман, який передає думки та почуття Сутіна, то віри немає. Мені дуже ��отілося почути авторську версію життя пензляра, що став генієм, але не так сталося як гадалося. Дружба з Модільяні, страждання від виразки - це все важливо, але це не про появу приголомшливих полотен.
Загалом не можу порекомендувати

"Paskutinė Sutino kelionė". Visai kitokia knyga nei skaitytos iki šiol. Tarsi yra tiesioginė kalba...bet neišskirta. Finale citata "Niekas negali būti kitoks, nei yra."

Ein furioser Roman. Dutli erzählt das Leben des Malers Chaim Soutine in Form von Erinnerungs- und Traumfetzen, die sich im morphiumumwölkten Geist des Maler als Assoziationskette aneinanderreihen, während er in einem Leichenwagen versteckt aus dem Hinterland nach Paris zu einer Notoperation transportiert wird. Das Magengeschwür, das zum tödlich endenden Magendurchbruch führt, ist in Dutlis Roman Soutines lebenslanger Begleiter, der ihm unerträgliche Schmerzen bereitet, aber auch Motor seines künstlerischen Schaffens ist. Das Geschwür gibt Ruhe, wenn es mit Milch besänftigt wird ¬– ein Beispiel für die starken Bilder in diesem Roman: Das Weiße der Milch bringt das Geschwür zum Schweigen, tilgt aber auch alle Farben und verunmöglicht somit die Malerei. Es gelingt Dutli, im Medium des Deliriums die Lebensgeschichte Soutines zu erzählen, die den jungen, bettelarmen Juden aus einem weißrussischen Schtetl über Minsk und Vilnius ins Paris der 1910er und 20er Jahre führt. In der Künstlerkolonie La Ruche, dann einige Zeit auf Geheiß seines Händlers Zborowski in Céret nahe der Pyrenäen, malt, hungert und leidet Soutine. Er malt Landschaften, Tierkadaver, Bildnisse der Dorfbewohner, „kleine Menschen, die erschrocken hineinschauen in die umfassende Heillosigkeit des Lebens (S. 165)“. Er malt und zerstört seine Bilder, da ihm nach ihrer Fertigstellung keines noch gut genug erscheint. Soutines Grobschlächtigkeit und Menschenscheu machen ihn zu einem Außenseiter in der Pariser Malerszene. Einzig mit Modigliani, der in Kunst und Leben so ganz sein Gegenentwurf zu sein scheint, verbindet ihn bis zu dessen Tod eine Freundschaft. Soutine bleibt im Schatten, bis ein neureicher amerikanischer Sammler, "ein Pharmazeut aus Philadelphia", Soutines Werke auf seinem Beutezug durch die Pariser Kunstszene entdeckt und ihn zu einem gefragten Maler macht. Neben den Malerkollegen und ihrer Entourage treten in Soutines Fiebertraum die Frauen seines Lebens auf: die deutsche Exilantin Gerda Groth-Michaelis, die Soutine Mademoiselle Garde nennt; Deborah, das Mädchen aus Soutines Vergangenheit; und schließlich Marie-Berthe Aurenche, von Max Ernst abgeliebt, die Soutine bis zum Tod begleitet; der Schatten, der sich in den 30er Jahren über Europa legt, erreicht schließlich auch Soutine und zwingt ihn dazu, Paris zu verlassen und im Verborgenen zu leben.
Der Roman fasziniert durch seine Erzählweise und seine Sprache, die Malweise und (Er-) Leben Soutines erlebbar werden lässt.
