This is the first YA fantasy book I read in 2021. This book has a hint of Harry Potter and Last Avatar theme.
Tess is born as the oracle but was raised under two human parents. She is taken to mage school to be trained as an oracle. She has ability to wield all powers.
She learns as a mage student and bears responsibility as an oracle at a young age.
There are two more books left in series to read! Im excited to read them.
I "read" this as an audible book my friend recommended to me, and after I got over my initial feelings of audio books (I fell asleep!) I discovered it was great to have in when out walking or running, so has kept me going during lockdown. I've really enjoyed having the company of all the characters when out on a long run, and although there were parts that are similar to other stories, I didn't mind and still hung on to see how this would end. Am glad to see there are more in the series so I can keep finding out about their adventures!
Ben Hale creates a magnificent series combining history, and modern life in the mage world, creating a magic, mystery, and much more this blends, the story is based on a tale of the last oracle.
An unknown girl growing up in America, her powers bound at birth, upon her 16th Birthday, she has broken the binding, but whilst out walking around she noticed she’s being followed, upon returning to her home she meets an unknown stranger who offers her advice and knowledge.
She gets her invite to join a special summer camp, which her parents confirm and she agrees to attend as she gets part of the way her mysterious stranger guides her to a different world, where she starts her journey in mage school.
This stunning story begins, it’s something you would never believe, personally I’ve read it manner times, and is always my favourite choice when I need to relax and get my own writing done.
I enjoyed this series. It borrowed a lot (and obviously) form other works -- like harry potter -- and the writing wasn't all that strong, but I enjoyed the magic and the characters were generally quite likable. Nothing ground breaking here but was nice to read a "story of young kid who goes to wizard school" and have females be the main characters for once.
Well written book with a similar plot line to Harry Potter...
My problem with it is that the story line is just not that great. It doesn't matter how good of a story teller you are if you just don't have a good story to tell. There are alot of situations where the reactions of the people etc just seem unrealistic. When reading a fantasy novel I'm obviously not looking for realism... however I can't suspend my disbelief enough to believe that people would react to certain situations the way they do in this book...
It also tries to hard to be harry potter... to the point that it is distracting. Protagonist isn't aware of the wizard world and finds out she is an important "mage"... gets taken to a school where she makes unlikely friends... There is a game that is similar to quidditch and the main character is great at flying so she becomes one of the youngest ever on the team etc... The similarities just keep coming and it is distracting.
To be honest I didn't finish the entire boxed set (I read 2.5 books)... but just couldn't finish (boring).
Seriously good read! Very Hary Potter-esque as I noted before. Love the story and the characters. Like that the adults and teens are working together to battle evil. Ben's writing is very good providing a lot of time and place depth that helps me visualize the settings. The character depth is also very good and has me rooting for, and feeling with, the various characters. Can't wait to see the how the Auren and Mage characters who have not yet come together will join forces to save the world. I am an Audible listener and must note that Derek Perkins is doing a fabulous job with narration. A good narrator maintains the character voices from book to book and makes it easy to differentiate the characters. Derek has made my listening quite enjoyable.
Mixed feelings, I liked the basic story, although I felt that they really overdid the power of the characters. It also ends with a cliffhanger after what I feel was some unrealistic reactions by the people to overwhelming power. I think I would have liked it more if it had ended about 6 chapters earlier.
A very good and well written set of books. A fantastic fantasy world on parr with Harry Potter. The books really do follow this plot line. Well worth a read and recommended to all!
Ummmm...this was...NOT what I expected. Somewhere in the "Harry Potter" realm, I had a very hard time staying focused on finishing this book. I did eventually find myself being more intrigued with the story line. Right now, I'm trying to decide if I want to further pursue the series to find out the outcome.
