Isobel MacEwen is sent as her cousin Catherine's proxy to marry Conlin de Braose, Baron of the Cinque Ports. But several months before she leaves Scotland, and on the same night that the baron's ship is docked in port, she is a witness to the murder of their Scottish king. Or almost a witness. From her hiding place on that stormy night, she only sees the murderer's shoes as he walks by. Isobel's weakness is shoes. She loves shoes and notices not only everyone's shoes, but the way they walk as well. And now a pair of shoes is the only clue to what really happened that night.
Lord Conlin de Braose of Sandwich has made an alliance with Laird MacEwen to marry his daughter, Lady Catherine. He's never met the woman, and little did he know at the time of the agreement that she was known as the Shrew of the Scots. But Conlin has a young daughter he needs to think about since his wife's death. She needs a mother, and he needs the alliance to protect his lands - and so he must remarry.
But on the day that his betrothed comes overseas to meet him, a storm takes the ship and Conlin rushes to help. The bounty he pulls from the wreckage is a woman - his betrothed's cousin and proxy - Isobel MacEwen. The woman is beautiful, but seems a bit addled because of her infatuation with shoes! And when Conlin falls in love with the proxy, he realizes he is in a horrible bind.
Can a baron of the Cinque Ports keep his alliance to ensure the safety of his daughter and his people? Or will he risk all and break that alliance to be with the woman he loves?

Bravo Elizabeth Rose! I was highly entertained with this book and didn't predict the twist in the story; not as predictable as I thought it would be. Looking forward to reading your other works, now that you are on my radar!
I can't believe how much I enjoyed this book. If only there wasn't so much emphasis on Isabel's lust for shoes it would have been perfect. Actually it wasn't her lust that was a bit annoying, it was the constant description of the shoes she was lusting after. Other than that though the story was fabulous.
I had heard of a proxy marriage before but never of the marriage being consummated by proxy. Isabel certainly was expected to do a lot for her cousin Catherine, it's just a good job that she found Colin very very attractive. She also had an ulterior motive for agreeing to go along with her cousin's plans (apart from gaining shoes), she thought Colin a suspect in the possible murder of Scotland's king. If it was true then she wanted to get evidence of it.
Therefore, not only was there the romantic, passionate story between Colin and Isabel developing, but also the mystery of whether the king was actually murdered and who the culprit was.
I felt so sorry for Isabel especially when she knew that she would have to give up Colin when her cousin showed her face. I also really disliked Catherine, she had the nickname of a shrew and she definitely lived up to it. I just wanted to get into the pages of the book and slap her!! I love a book where I can get all tied up emotionally in the characters lives.
This book is one that I didn't want to put down and I definitely want to read the next in the series. This author is definitely going on my list of favourites!

He's never met the woman, but she is known as the Shrew of the Scots which is something he didn't know at the time of the agreement. Conlin has a young daughter named Rose that is in need of a Mother and he needs the alliance to protect his lands. On the day his betrothed comes to him, a storm sinks the ship and seeing this Conlin rushes out to sea himself to help. The bounty he pulls from the sea is a woman, Catherine's cousin and proxy Isobel MacEwen and her gaurd. The woman is beautiful, but to him seems a bit addled due to her infatuation with shoes. Isobel helps him make amends with his daughter and not only has his daughter fallen in love with Isobel so has he. Can the Baron of the Cinque Ports keep his alliance to ensure the safety of his daughter and his people? Or will he risk everything just to be with Isobel? Elizabeth Rose spins a superbly fantastic tale of love and life in Scotland and England during the middle ages. I enjoyed this book from the very beginning until the very end. I also loved the fact that Isobel loved shoes so much. This was a great book that I would highly recommend and it had the Elizabeth Rose stamp all over it as she has such a unique style of writing that is all her own.
When you see the name Elizabeth Rose, author, you know there is an adventure to be read. This was no exception. Combine a heroine Isabelle MacEwen who has a shoe obsession( yes they have spanned the ages!) with a King’s murder and you have the beginning of an intriguing story! Going by ship to meet him, the ship flounders, Conlin comes to her rescue and pulls her out before she drowns. As the two.spend time together a mutual attraction arises. Fast paced adventure filled. A very unique Medieval Historical Romance. A Marriage by proxy. A heroine with a shoe obsession, awesome! A hero who is caught up in drama and finding true love, endearing... Filled with drama, secrets, murder, possible treason, passion, a shoe obsession, romance, second chances, love and a few twists and turns along the way. I never figured out the big secret until the very end and then, the really big secret, I was simply in awe. I absolutely loved this story. I couldn't put it down. Keep turning pages until the very last page. I had to see the ending!! I loved the way the author incorporated the heroine's shoe obsession into the story and the few other secrets was simply outstanding. Frankly, I never saw the big secret coming. WOW! A very exciting and invigorating story! Well written with vivid descriptions. The characters are engaging, endearing, challenging and realistic. I can not lie, I wanted to smack the heroine a time or two, and had my fingers crossed she'd come though in the end. I wanted to shake her and scream "NO, absolutely not". Fans of historical romance with suspense, mystery, drama, and awe moments, you, simply DO NOT want to miss "The Baron's Bounty. A must read! Well done. I look forward to reading more invigorating tales from Ms. Rose!!

Lady Isobel MacEwen has a terrible weakness, shoes. Her cousin uses that weakness to get Isobel to do all sorts of things she shouldn't, Like meeting her betrothed instead of her. Isobel sees much more than she wanted to that night. Lord Conlin de Braose, Baron Sandwich. As a cinque port Baron he and the others control the fishing and trade that comes ashore. As a widowed father he has decided his daughter needs a new mother. So he makes an alliance with Laird MacEwen to marry his daughter. This story has some truly hilarious parts, mainly because of our heroines addiction. Even when our lovely hero knows he is being played, he can't stop it. There is something strange happening. Is there a murderer on the lose? You will meet some fascinating characters, some are friends from the first book in the series. Because of that it would be best to read the books in order to avoid spoilers. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.
Even though I was gifted this book, I have become a huge fan of Ms Rose. Her books always have adventure, suspense and surprise and of course romance and love in the them and this one did not disappoint. Although in the beginning I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book, Isobel’s shoe fettish just seemed a little over the top for me, more like a fairy tale but as I got into the book, Isobel showed her true colours in her strength and compassion for Conlin’s young daughter and for Conlin himself, who was trying to do the best for his daughter but also dealing with his great pain of loss. I also found the twist and turns keep me very surprised and would suggest any one who likes a bit of mystery included in their romance to read this book. You will be surprised by the ending. Enough said no spoilers here.
I liked Conlin and Isobel's story but I was a little mystified at her obsession with shoes. She did all kinds of things for Catherine, her cousin, just for a pair of shoes. As nasty tempered as Catherine was, I would not have done anything for her because she was a shrew. Although Catherine was obviously schizophrenic, they did not know about that type of disorder at that time. It was more or less in curable because they had no drugs to relieve the disorder. In the end, I felt for her father even though I did not agree with his methods. He spent so much time covering up her screw-ups, that he really didn't have time for a life of his own. He did her no favors by covering up what she did. This was a very good book and if you like suspense this is the book for you. If I could give it more than five stars I would.

Conlin is aware that his unruly daughter needs a new mother, now that his wife has been dead more than three years and he is prepared to accept his King’s choice of an alliance with a Scot’s clan. Lady Catherine is difficult however and her illness (whether feigned or not) means that her cousin Isobel is sent to England as her proxy, with Catherine to follow on later. What however happens when Conlin and Isobel begin to have feelings for each other? Loved the heroine’s shoe fetish, amusing how she had no resistance whatsoever when shoes were in the equation, though it did mean that her cousin was able to bribe her to do anything that she herself didn’t want to do.
Conlin doesn’t really want to get married, but he will for two reasons: an alliance with a Scottish Laird and to get a mother for his rambunctious daughter. The second book in The Barons of the Cinque Ports Series is a page-turner. There is the mystery surrounding the murder of the Scottish king. Isobel, the heroine, has a shoe fetish and a talent for identifying people by their shoes and the way they walk. There is a marriage by proxy. Lady Catherine, who is supposed to be Conlin’s wife, finally shows up, but brings quite a surprise with her.
Elizabeth Rose is a wonderful storyteller. In The Baron’s Bounty she blends romance, mystery, and adventure into a story that hold the readers attention from the first page to the last. Brian J. Gill’s narration is excellent. He is quite talented with different dialects. I enjoyed listening to him read this story.
Catherine has used Isobel to do all the tasks she did not want to do herself. The cousins have grown up together since the death of Isobel parents, when her uncle took her in. Now Catherine is sending Isobel to meet her intended and not until the wedding, months later, do they actually meet. If that sounds like a bad idea, you're right! You front want to miss the crazy twists in the plot and hear about the next fantastical pair of shoes Catherine has purchased with which to tempt Isobel! Fun and well.crafted.
Interesting written story. It was definitely a different spin on proxy marriages and alliances. I enjoyed the wedding night scene and the way it played out. Well written and enjoyable from both character points of view. Throughout the story I felt like there was extra background given on some things over and over again, while some things were left not fully explained. Overall it is an enjoyable read and I will likely pick up the others in this series.
A great book that played to my own love of shoes , which was a plus. Written wonderfully, with great characterisations , and personalities that were so different and addictive.
It was one of those books I couldn’t put down , a must read . I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to submit a review
A very fast paced story, full of adventure and mystery. I did feel for Isabel, being used by her cousin, all because of her love of shoes. There is an attraction between Isabel and Lord Conlin but they are aware nothing can come of it because he is betrothed to her cousin. There is also a murderer’s identity to discover. This story has a few twists that will keep you reading to the end.
Our shoe loving heroine was a very cute twist to this novel. I enjoyed reading all about the twists and turns this novel brought me through. I did guess who the “killer” was but the circumstances were crazier than I had guessed. I think I’d enjoy reading more in this series, at times I caught myself laughing out loud and that is always a goood sign.
Isobel lost her larent as a kid growing up with her uncle and spoiled cousin. She developed a love for shoes. Always being bribed by her cousin to do her task with payment of shoes . Isobel gets her self into more then she bargained for.
Great book no whinny heroine. Strong fiece but loving characters.
Love it, who don't love shoes? Isobel the heroine in this novel and she is obsess with shoes, she got in trouble every time she gets a shoe doing her cousin business or whatever her cousin wants her to do. That’s why she ends up in England to marry her cousin betrothed as a proxy.
I really enjoy reading this novel so much and the twist that the author made to deliver a happy ending 😊
The Baron's Bounty (The Barons of the Cinque Ports Series Book 2)
The love story of Isobel and Conlin. Isobel has an obsession with shoes. Every time her cousin Catherine wants her to do something she gave her a pair of shoes and now Lady Catherine want Isobel to go to England to be her proxy in her marry to Conlin. Will Isobel fall for Conlin? Great story.
Very entertaining and witty with Isabel's shoe fetish making me laugh out loud at times. The mystery of the suspected murderer just adds to the suspense and kept me turning the pages right up to the end. Highly recommended!
"the baron's bounty" a man in a promised arrangement to protect his people to have been sent a women to stand in as her proxy, having to save her from almost drowning to falling in love with her. i read this book when i bought the set "Reluctant Brides
A wonderfully romantic novel full of mysteries, twists and revelations! Whimsical and full of lol moments ! Mysteries and murder also abound, a truly enjoyable read 😊
THE BARON'S BOUNTY Loved Isabel. She has a shoe addiction! She knows people by their shoes and their walk. She witnesses a murder. You will love this page turner! Elizabeth Rose can transport you back in time with her wonderful writing!
So bazaar, so intriguing, so scary that I really enjoyed reading this somewhat historical story. The characters so so interesting that you can't help but want to know more about them.
A crazy woman, a dead king, a dead guard., a ship wreak, and a proxy marriage. Is there a happy ending in the future dead the book and see the trials and tribulations. Also discover the Baron's Bounty.
This was a fun read. I thought Izzy's fixation on shoes fun and the Baron's frustration with her shoe fetish histerical. Rose definitely needed to grow up and Catherine was a mean, calculating advisary.
I loved this story from the start. It kept me hooked right through to the end. I loved how the author wrote the Scottish language so well. Great characters and such chemistry between Isabelle and Conlin. Would recommend this story.
A somewhat interesting tale of a shoe obsession and the trouble it can cause. Isabel agrees to be a proxy bride for shoes to add to her collection. Little did she know the trouble that would cause. Sinking ships, mysterious deaths, murders and split personalities all add to the tale as Isobel tries to get her happy ever after.
I enjoyed this book. There are so many things that happened in our history. I have found out things about my ancestors that could be a story. It would have been nice if my mother knew some of these stories.
Baron Sandwich finds himself married by proxy. His betrothed is a crazy split personality woman. His daughter hates him but reconciles with her father. The fiancee is found out and is killed by a horse. The baron and proxy marry. HEA.
