Bibliophile BartVan Aken has been collecting quotes about reading for several years. This bookcontains his own personal selection. Including such declarations of love as"Reading is that fruitful miracle of communication in the midst ofsolitude" (Marcel Proust), surprising, witty statements like "Outsideof a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark toread" (Groucho Marx) and wise statements to mull over, including "Wecan destroy what we have written, but we cannot unwrite it" (AnthonyBurgess). Every quote is presented in a unique, original and tailor-made designby Dooreman, with an adapted font or special letter shapes. Where applicable,the quote has also been provided in the original language alongside theEnglish, with a brief explanation, such as the author and context.

Dooreman studiedfree-form graphics at Sint- Lucasinstituut in Ghent. He started out his careeras an illustrator. Over time, however, his activities veered towards typographyand design. He creates the covers of all of the books for the Belgian authorTom Lanoye and has designed posters for various theatres. He also works as adesigner and typographer for almost all of the Flemish and Dutch publishers. Dooreman hasreceived several awards, including the Henry Van de Velde Award for his entirecareer. He is also a musician.

Truly remarkable how few quotes by female writers are included.

I think I enjoyed the brief bios of the writers more than the actual quotes. The typography of the quotes was more of a distraction than an enhancement.

Como toda recopilación de citas, Siempre imaginé que el paraíso sería algún tipo de biblioteca (frase que, por cierto, es del genial Jorge Luis Borges) da lo que ofrece, un excelente compendio de frases que tienen que ver sobre los libros, la lectura y la escritura. Así que, como buen amante de esos temas, la lectura de este libro es demasiado rápida.

Bart Van Aken es la persona que ha compilado estas citas, aunque no las he escrito él. Lo que si ha hecho es añadir una pequeña biografía de cada autor que sale en el libro, además de colocar la frase en el idioma original del autor. Además de eso, hay que destacar la tipografía, preciosa y distinta en cada cita, de la mano del famoso diseñador Dooreman. Sin duda, la combinación de ambos elementos te hace disfrutar mucho del libro.

Cómo dije anteriormente, Siempre imaginé que el Paraíso sería algún tipo de biblioteca, es una colección de frases sobre lo que supone escribir, la lectura y el amor reverencial hacia los libros. No todas las citas están dichas por autores de renombre. Hay autores relativamente desconocidos, actores, profesores y algún que otro político. Todos ellos nos revelan aspectos de los libros que los amantes de este maravilloso invento compartimos. Y es que, pese a que nos separen años o siglos de distancia, el acto de leer es el mismo y las emociones que desatan muchas veces son universales. Así que es inevitable que te reconozcas en alguna de estas citas.

En suma, Siempre imaginé que el Paraíso sería algún tipo de biblioteca, es una buena opción para leer entre lecturas más densas. Es un pequeño oasis para ayudarnos a nosotros, los lectores y escritores, a descubrir nuestro Paraíso aquí en la Tierra. Y es que por una vez estoy totalmente de acuerdo con el título. Yo también me imagino que el Paraíso, de existir, tiene que ser una biblioteca.
