More and more men are seeking out great portrait, commercial, or fashion photography. For working photographers, photographing men may be one of today's greatest new opportunities. But, while there are dozens of books, guides, and workshops on photographing women, there's been practically nothing comparable for men… until now! Jeff Rojas's Photographing Men is today's definitive full-color guide to every aspect of modern male photography. Rojas builds on his unique in-person course, which has made him Google's #1 go-to search result for knowledge on photographing males. Rojas covers posing, styling, posing, lighting, post-production, and more, showing how to achieve outstanding results and maximum creative expression. You'll discover how
So, the first thing I discovered when writing the review of this book is that the phrase "photographing men" brings up a bunch of... interestingly unrelated books. :-)
To the actual content of this book though! This was a brief discussion of some of the concerns around taking portrait photos of men. As the author notes, there are many resources about photographing women, but for men, the standard set of options leaves less room for creativity. Like many resources on photography, the posing, lighting, and planning techniques themselves are not particularly groundbreaking, but it's useful to be able to study the examples and see how they are applied.
Overall, a useful read, and I look forward to trying some (slightly) more formal portrait photography with my favorite subject: my husband.
Overall, I think that this is a very good book. It is not 'deep', but then I don't think that we need 'deep'!
First of all, I am happy that there is a book on photographing men. There is a lot of emphasis on photographing women, and there is not enough on the subject of men
I like that he starts by talking about how to dodge and burn men's portraits depending on the face type. This is very good indeed.
Second, I like that he shows the way to light and pose men of different body types. The inclusion of lighting diagrams, and photographs is excellent.
There is enough material here to refer back to in times of need.
It's good there is a book solely focusing on men, an area largely neglected in photography with a different set of skills. The book really becomes useful around page 173 when it dives into specific lighting setups. There is useful information throughout though and even though I've been doing this 10 years I managed quite a few takeaway bits of information.
First book I've seen that's really directed at photographing men. I love that lighting setups are included and shows you how to get the desired result. It doesn't say these are the only ways to achieve these outcomes; rather it serves as a guide to help along the way. Very useful.
I truly give this book 5 stars as it proves to be a quality and actionable manual for photography. The posing tips, lighting, common fixes, etc are spot on.
Covers everything you want to know about getting your subject to shine
Wonderful book. Topics covered as well as depth. Use of images and even additional references make this a great book to learn and put in practice portrait photography, in this specific case with great advice for male subjects specifically.
Underwhelming. It's not Mr. rojas's fault. The problem with almost all photography books is that they have to cater to beginners so the majority of the book is a rehash of lighting and modifiers and lenses for portraits. Styling chalter can be summed up as "make sure the clothing fits."
