This one is hard to rate. This was a love/hate relationship, in every sense of the term. There were parts I loved and parts I didn't love. The h/hr start off hating each other with a hero who started off on the wrong foot for me with his abrasive assholery behavior. But Yates did a pretty decent job bringing me around to warming up to this guy with some development (very slow at first), apologies and a tear-jerking backstory. This definitely wasn't perfect, in fact I felt Yates focused on the wrong part of the couple's relationship through most of the book. . This was all strained tension and awkwardness, not enough fun & play to balance it out IMO. Because of that, this felt like a novella. The pacing and fallout of the drama felt very hurried and rushed. Not enough time was focused on Sierra and Ace getting to really know each other and open up. That kind of all happened a little late. And the 'big fallout' was over a silly simple picnic with a very rushed reconciliation over a day. Too rushed and too fast.

Sierra and Ace's chemistry was fire and sexy...it just took a while. I wasn't sure about these two with the way they started off. But the chemistry is there and it definitely helped seeing our cynical jaded hero so desperate to keep the girl and really wanting their baby. Seeing prickly world-weary Ace be humbled and captivated by Sierra who is in many ways naive and sheltered but has fire and sass to match his was great to see. I just wanted to see more of it. The epilogue was adorable but again....that should have played out more in the story itself.

But all in all, I'm a huge Maisey Yates fan. While this one wasn't her best work and not my personal fav, it was still pretty enjoyable for me. I can't recommend this author enough. Her writing is definitely special and different. I always find her books so fun and her writing so refreshing and engaging. It's smart, sharp, witty and sexy. This one isn't as funny as the other Cooper Ridge books but it had it's moments. It was especially good to see Jack and Katie in here. And I will definitely be continuing this Cooper Ridge series, I'm enjoying it so much. I can see Yates is branching this series out into sub series and I think that's a really smart move. A lot of fun interesting characters with a lot of grit.

I’m not sure what happened, but this book was missing everything I’ve come to love about the Copper Ridge series. There was no emotional depth, silly banter or just plain fun. I’m so bummed.

The beginning of the book was promising. Ace is the cranky owner of the bar in Copper Ridge and Sierra is a rich girl looking to prove she can make it on her own. Ace gives her a job as a waitress and sits back just waiting for her to fall on her face. It’s pretty obvious there’s an attraction on both ends, but they bicker constantly. Ace’s baggage makes him take a step back and second-guess any lust driven moves. That doesn’t last for long though.

This is where the story sort of tanked for me. Their first night together changes everything.

Don’t get me wrong, there were some steamy scenes, but Ace and Sierra's connection fell flat for me. There was no emotion behind their actions for the majority of the book. And the big issue at the end - a fight over a picnic? I cringed. It was so petty and silly. And it was all because of Ace. He seemed to be having an identity crisis at every turn. Was he the town playboy or a family man? A loner or someone yearning to be a parent? A drunken bar owner or the son of a preacher? My head was spinning. I just couldn’t figure him out.

I thought Madison, Sierra’s sister, sort of stole the show. Her threat to Ace was hilarious and she was funnier than both of them put together. I would love to read her story.

I’m hoping this was just a fluke. Just a case of me not connecting with a set of characters, instead of a preview of how the rest of the series will play out.

I've really enjoyed all of the other books in this series, so I was expecting fluff and snark and banter. This...was not those things.

I liked Sierra and Ace well enough. I liked that they were so different, I liked their chemistry at the beginning and the push and pull they had. And then...

Overall, I will always read more books in this series, but for me, this one was definitely missing something.

What I Liked

+ Sierra, despite being young and inexperienced, I thought she was the better of the two (compared to Ace). I loved her spirit. I loved that she wanted to make something of herself, not just because she came from the West family, especially after she found out that her father had an affair which resulted in her having a grown-up half-brother. I loved her tenacity of wanting to prove everyone wrong, that she could stand on her two feet. She is a heroine I can cheer on, for sure.

+ The banter was fun -- at times

What I Didn't Care About

+ The . Seriously, it wasn't a favorite trope of mine. To be honest, I always feel like it is a lazy way out of a relationship built. It's also one of the things that drives me away from MF romance several years ago -- and moved to MM romance. So I truly didn't care about this because

+ Ace felt a little too condescending and I didn't feel their actual attraction. I wasn't convinced with their romance, Ace's change of heart, and their happy ending.

Hopefully Colton's story will be better.

This book reminds me a bit of Brokedown Cowboy (Copper Ridge #2) in that I liked the characters featured in the romance, but I hated their pathway to HEA. Ace Thompson, the hero, is the local bar owner who is afraid of love because he's been badly hurt in the past. Sierra West is the beautiful blonde who left her family behind to start over after her father's big, bad secret leaked out. When Sierra leaves her family's very large, very lucrative ranch in protest of her father's actions, she is hired on by Ace to work at his bar. It isn't long before the two are acting on their impulses.

I really liked the Garrett siblings from the first three full-length books so much. I love that they all had issues but were still able to find perfect-for-them partners. I love that they are still factoring into the stories in this series-the recurrence of beloved characters is one of my favorite things about Maisey Yates' series. When their trilogy ended (this larger series is made up of smaller trilogies), I was afraid that I wouldn't like the West family stories because I didn't like them when they showed up in previous books. After reading this one, I've met most of the siblings now and I think these books are going to be satisfying. But I'm still irritated about the choices Ace and Sierra made and their resulting behaviors. Not going to spoil anything, but they made me roll my eyes several times.

The next book in the series features Sierra's brother Colton, who (so far) has been engaged to the fiance-from-hell. His sisters do not like her at all, and I'm excited to see how things pan out for him in the future.

I really enjoyed the previous three books in this series but this one fell quite flat for me. Ace is the local bar owner and bartender in Copper Ridge. His father is the town's pastor, and his relationship with his family is very rocky. Ace is gruff and opinionated. When Sierra comes in one night with a group of girlfriends, and he can't help but notice how tipsy she is when she rides the mechanical bull. He also notices when all her friends leave without her. Feeling generous, he offers her a ride home - and her drunken conversation gets on his nerves.

Sierra comes from a very well to do family, but after the bombshell drops that her father has been having affairs, Sierra doesn't know what to do. She decides to move out to deal with her feelings, but that means she needs a job. Through mutual friends, Ace is encouraged to give Sierra a waitressing job, and both of them reluctantly agree. Sierra needs the money, and Ace is planning on opening a brewery soon and could use the extra help.

Working together allows them to get to know one another and it all leads to a one night stand. This leads to a spoiler.

Things progress from here.

Ace's gruffness never appealed to me - he felt more condescending being gruff than being sexy and hot.

"You look like something, that's for sure," he said, dark eyes raking over her body. "But let me tell you something, Sierra, I'm not that hard up. You want me, that much is obvious. It isn't like I haven't noticed you're a pretty little thing. But things come too easily to you. You think you can manipulate me like this? You're out of luck. You need to learn to ask for things. If you want me, you're going to have to ask. You're going to have to beg."

He always rubbed me the wrong way.

I liked Sierra better, but I never felt her chemistry with Ace. I didn't get their attraction to each other. And then the spoiler happens and it just didn't do anything for me. Their conflict at the end felt forced too.

Definitely recommend the first three books but this one is a miss.

I love this series for one simple reason, the characters and I couldn't wait for Ace to receive his own story and to finally find out what exactly happened to him.

The story starts off with Ace working when Sierra comes in with friends and gets drunk. Her friends end up leaving her there and Ace gives her a ride home but somehow these two end up rubbing each other the wrong way.

Sierra went out to forget that her family wasn't as perfect as she thought. Now she is determined to make it on her own but first she needs a job and as it turns out Ace is hiring. They both have this attraction to one another but Ace doesn't mess with employees but after getting drunk one night things happen but their friendship stays interesting and intact.

After the one night they spend together you can see how this story is going to go. I wish maybe it had more of a little suspense on that part. I did like how they grew closer and started opening up to one another. They actually become more then an employer/ employee relationship and become friends.

At first Sierra seems spoiled but I really liked how she wanted to do things on her own and wanted to find out if she could. One of my favorite parts is when she moves to her own place and decides she needs dishes and to make it a home so she goes shopping. It was such a big deal for her and I loved how excited she was even though she couldn't cook but the point was she was determined she could make it own her own.

Ace annoyed me when he basically put Sierra in the same box as his ex. But of course when relationships end badly we always take it out on the next one who comes along and that's what he did. At times I felt bad Sierra because she was still trying to navigate him and yet learning herself.

Although I liked this book and thought it was a great addition to this series I felt the storyline was a little cliché. I would have liked to have seen it changed up a little. But overall I'm looking forward to reading about Sierra's siblings and to find out what Yates has in store for them.

Review posted on Got Fiction?

I'm just eating up Maisey Yates' Copper Ridge series! This is Ace's book. For anyone following the series, Ace is the bartender who has appeared in every Copper Ridge book so far. And his book is my favorite.

Sierra West, Copper Ridge's golden girl, is cutting off her father, and trying to live on her own, without his money. After finding out her dad had a son and then paid that son to stay quiet about his parentage (Jack's book Bad News Cowboy
), she was pissed. It tore the family apart, or more realistically, it widened fractures that had already been there. But it also forced Sierra to realize what kind of person her father really was.

So Ace hires Sierra as a waitress as a favor to Jack, but he instantly hates her. She reminds him of his ex-wife who was a piece of work. She's wealthy and privileged, but unlike Ace's ex, Sierra is a good person. She knows she's had the benefit of her father's money, and she's making major life decisions now.

Sierra might come off as a spoiled rich brat who's throwing a tantrum since she's mad at her daddy, but Ace finds out she's so much more than that. Although it takes him a long time to pull his head out and realize how amazing she really is.

The two of them are fire on the pages. What I really like is seeing how they interact, and how Sierra changes Ace's mind about her being nothing more than a spoiled Daddy's Girl. This was such an important part of their romance. Ace needs to see that not every woman is like his ex. And that Sierra is so much stronger than he ever gave her credit for.

Whenever I need something fun, sexy, and guaranteed to make me feel all the feels, I grab a Copper Ridge book. There isn't one I haven't liked.

Oh! And really quickly, before I forget, this book has a bonus novella at the end called Hometown Heartbreaker, which is the story of Aidan and Casey that came before Ace and Sierra.

I'm not going to rate this because I'm dropping it for reasons I don't hold against the book, really. I mean yeah, I didn't connect with either protagonist, but the story wasn't anything I was looking forward to, either. Ace is a condescending, judgmental jerk and Sierra is coming out of her spoiled, selfish haze and their growth arc feels both predictable and tiresome and I'm just not interested in going through it.

The thing is, and the reason I'm not going to bother rating this, that I knew this more or less going in. So it's really my fault for picking this up despite knowing what it'd consist of and knowing that it isn't to my taste. My bad. It's totally me and not you and I'll own that.

Did not finish. Decided this author is not a good fit for me. Way too much language. Cute cover which is what drew me in but I wasn't sure what to expect from this author. After being turned off by the language I read a couple reviews of books in this series and opted to stop knowing there would be descriptive sexual content.

One Night Charmer (Copper Ridge #4)

One Night Charmer, Hmm I’m not 100% sure at what happened here!
I really loved the other Maisey Yates stories I have read, but this one fell a little flat.

I did enjoy it, just not as much as I would have liked to. Maisey writing is great, and I enjoyed the town she has created with in Copper Ridge.

This is still a sexy insightful little read, personally I couldn’t connect with either of the characters.

My review is going to be short and sweet, good read will continue to read all Maisey’s other work.

A view days ago I was in desperate need of some fun, not to complicated love story. And I came across Maisey Yates. I’ve read the first three book in the Copper Ridge series and loved those books. So the decision to read this fourth book in the series was easily made. And a story about cowboys can never do wrong.

In ‘One Night Charmer’ we follow Sierra West, the youngest daughter of one of the richest man in Copper Ridge. And she is everything Ace Thompson doesn’t like in a woman, except the fact that she is very beautiful. But Ace doesn’t need to get involved with a rich girl who didn’t have to work for anything in her life.
Sierra is used to people thinking stuff about her before even talking with her. But when she finds out her family is anything but perfect, she has to swallow her pride and beg for a job at Ace’s bar. And soon Ace finds out he is all wrong about Sierra.

Like I said before I loved reading the previous Copper Ridge books and this book is definitely not an exception. I loved ‘One Night Charmer’ and I loved Sierra and Ace. There were a lot of wrong assumptions in this book and I really enjoyed reading about Sierra and Ace slowly learned the truth about one another. There was some definite chemistry between these two and I just couldn’t stop reading. Which is probably why I read this book in only one sitting.

I also enjoyed the part about Ace being a bar owner. I’ve never read a book with a bar owner as the main character and I definitely enjoyed reading about his life and the way he did his work.

There wasn’t really anything I didn’t like about ‘One Night Charmer’. It was definitely a fun, easy going, romantic, cowboy story. And I can’t wait to read more books by Maisey Yates.

One Night Charmer was an enjoyable enough read, but was not my favorite book in the Copper Ridge series by any stretch.

Sierra West is determined to make a life for herself after discovering everything she knew about her family was a lie. The only job she's able to find is bartending for Ace Thompson. Sierra and Ace always seem to argue whenever they're around each other until one night the arguing stops and their attraction takes over. When their relationship takes an unexpected turn, the two need to decide what they're willing to risk for love.

Sierra goes through a lot of character development over the course of the book and grows into a much stronger person by the end. She starts off unsure of what she wants in life and despite being thrown some curveballs, she figures out what she wants and in the end manages to get it for herself. Ace has difficulty trusting people and finds it hard to let anyone in. He had a rough life before finding his way to Copper Ridge, so I understand why he acted that way but it did provide for some frustrating moments between him and Sierra.

Hate to love relationships are usually one of my favorites, but it didn't work for me this time. Unfortunately, Sierra and Ace's relationship never seemed to have any positives outside of the physical. Their chemistry in bed was great, but I think that's more to the author's credit than their relationship. Also, the kind of ruined things for me as that's one of my least favorite tropes.

Ace's Bar is one of the central spots in the Copper Ridge series, so that means there are a lot of cameos of other characters. I love how well the author has connected all of the characters.

Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book as much as the rest of the series as it has one of my least favorite relationship tropes and was lacking in the banter and humor I've come to expect from this series. Overall, I mostly enjoyed One Night Charmer for the glimpses of my other favorite Copper Ridge characters.

This book is really problematic, but I mostly enjoyed it so...yeah. Don't @ me.

Exhibit A: fetishizing lesbians for the hetero male gaze
"It isn't about a guy."

"Honey. I don't really care what it's about. Guy, girl." He paused. "I'm actually more interested in the second option."

She turned toward him. "Not a girl, either."

"Way to spoil a man's fantasies."

Exhibit B: hating women because you can't control your dick, pt. 1
He supposed it wasn't her fault that she was far too pretty for her own good. But he was going to hold it against her anyway. Because he was never going to hold her against him, and that was the source of a lot of problems.

Exhibit C: hating women because you can't control your dick, pt. 2
Stupid restraint. He blamed that. He blamed the complicated bullshit of testosterone that seemed to like nothing better than mixing anger with desire. He blamed anger for making desire so much better. Most of all, he blamed Sierra, for being so blonde and bouncy.

Exhibit D: Maisey Yates is LITERALLY OBSSESSED with female sexual inexperience
"I've never had an orgasm with a guy. Not that I’ve slept with that many. Two. But." Her whole face turned as pink as the wine they’d had earlier.

Exhibit E: pregnancy as a punishment for female sexuality
"I mean..." She took a deep breath, clarity coming to her in small increments. "I made a mistake. And I have to face up to that. I have to deal with it."

"You mean you’re going to have a baby?"

The sentence wrapped itself around Sierra’s throat and threatened to strangle her. "I guess so."

This novel was emotionally raw. Yates has the ability to write emotions that pack a punch while still making you laugh. The heartfelt tale of these two individuals was heartbreaking and hopeful when taken separately, together they were astounding. Her seamless plot brings this all forward while bringing the small town of Copper Ridge to life, with all its edges and corners. The sense of completeness that she develops is fantastic.

The characters in this novel were also fantastically well developed. They were approachable and easy to relate to, but also slightly broken individuals. I love how the in depth character backgrounds play into their combined present. I also enjoyed their realistic actions and reactions to situations, be they emotionally charges or a simple business decision. Above all, I enjoyed seeing these two come together as they healed themselves (albeit in less than ideal circumstances, but that just made it better).

Talk about a novel that really packs a punch. This is a must read for those who enjoy small town romance, whether you’ve been introduced to Yates’ work in the past or not.

This was my first Maisey Yates book, but it won't be my last (and that is not because there are already at least two, if not more in my Kindle library). This was a really nice contemporary small town romance, but it had some pretty decent meat to chew on in it. Unlike many damaged goods stories we actually witness the full transformation rather have a magic wand of "love" waved over the struggling and magically find the HEA ending.

This was not the first book in the series, but was the first one that I have read. While I can make a pretty good guess at some of the preceding "couples" in the series I don't think I missed anything measureable by having not read the prior titles nor do I feel reading this one will have taken anything away from going back and reading the previous installments. I'd only say that I never had a very good sense of the town or setting and I suspect that is because it was addressed more in the earlier books.

I will definitely be looking to read more of Yates' titles in the future.

I received an ARC of this title via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed above are my own.

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

Sierra has had an easy life, but when her dad drops a bomb on what she thought was a perfect life she doesn't know what to do so she cuts her ties with him. Ace immediately thinks he has Sierra figured out, and he pretty much does in many ways, but all that's about to change. Ace has a lot hidden from the world. Poor guy's had it rough. Who knew? So, needless to say, there is more than an age gap between Sierra and Ace. They have a lot to overcome within themselves before they could ever be together. Plus, they get thrown quite a doozie! I'm not saying more! You'll have to see for yourself when you read it. And yes, I do recommend that you read it.

One Night Charmer by Maisey Yates was kindly provided to me by the publisher through NetGalley for review. The opinions are my own.

I've been dying for Ace to get his own story from the minute I met him in PART TIME COWBOY. There was just something so charismatic about him and I was desperate to know his backstory. Thankfully Yates delivered with one hell of a story. (It certainly packed a wallop)

And I have to say, while Sierra took a bit of warming up to, she turned into a powerhouse of a character. She grew in to herself and matured so quickly that I thought I wouldn't enjoy her story arc. Trust Yates to pull a rabbit out of her hat and deliver....strongly.

Yet another great addition to the Copper Ridge story. Can't wait for more!

Ace and Sierra have an interest in relationship in like to see them squabble at times:
“I guess I need to talk to my brother.”
“What are the odds he comes after me with a shotgun?”
“High. Very high. But I think if I deal with him, maybe I can save your balls.”
“I’m not very happy with my balls right now, so I may just let it happen.”
I really enjoyed this book I liked Ace.

Heavy but really good stuff. Not the usual romance pattern, which made me like it.

What I found refreshing and liked was seeing dialogue where a character was at a loss for words and not having a witty comeback all the time. A retort was stuttered or fell flat. That just brought another element to the story for me.

After reading some of the reviews on this website I purchased One Night Charmer with some unfamiliar trepidation for a Maisey Yates book. But since I was already heavily invested in the Copper Ridge series having read all the books and novellas leading up to it, I went ahead and downloaded it to my Nook anyway. The main criticism seemed to be that the readers didn’t feel any chemistry between the hero Ace and heroine Sierra. On the surface that made perfect sense as they lived in two different worlds, Ace the owner of the local dive bar and semi-estranged son of the local Baptist minister and Sierra the daughter of privilege, had little in common and there was also a ten year age difference between them. And for much of the book they were either fighting or fucking. Sometimes doing both at the same time. If you’re going to read romance novels and enjoy them you first and foremost have to be able to accept the concept of love at first sight. Of a physical chemistry that sets fire to their blood causes desire to burn the very first time the two main characters lock eyes with one another generating an irresistible pull for them towards each other. I thought the author did her usual excellent job of describing all the characteristics of that lust at first sight with both Ace and Sierra. The second thing you need to accept if you’re going to enjoy a modern romance novel is that most of the story is going to consist of one or both characters resisting that pull to surrender themselves not only physically but emotionally to the person they find themselves attracted to. Again Ms. Yates does this in fine fashion. She lets you inside of their conflicted minds to discover their inner most thoughts and feelings in a very believable way that absorbs you making you hunger for the next page to learn what happens next even as consciously you know that in the end they will find their HEA in each other arms. The other big criticism I read was the pivotal picnic scene. Frankly I don’t know what the issue is there? Maisey made it very obvious for the reader that the picnic in both Sierra and Ace’s minds represented a greater level of intimacy and that Ace in rejecting the picnic was rejecting Sierra’s push for that intimacy. I read criticism that the story lacked depth. Ace’s broken marriage, his fight to maintain a relationship with the child that called him daddy even though she wasn’t his blood wasn’t deep? Sierra’s gradual transformation from a coddled young adult to a grown woman willing to give up her pampered life and fight for what she wanted while trying to come to grips with her daddy issues wasn’t deep? I honestly don’t get the criticisms? But hey, everybody is entitled to his or her own opinion. I’m just sharing mine and in my mind this was a wonderful read.
I thought that Ms. Yates did her usual masterful job in creating the characters of both Sierra and Ace. Of letting us get into their skins and experience what makes them tick. Why they say the things they say and do the things they do. She’s just so good at humanizing her characters making them perfectly imperfect. She also includes secondary roles and cameo appearances for characters from previous books in the series. In this book Jack and Kate get minor supporting roles and we get to learn something new about what’s happening with them. And of course we’re introduced more closely to her siblings Colton and Madison because they are the characters for future books.
As I’ve said before my measure of how good a book is or isn’t is by how much difficulty I have putting it down before I get to the end. Honestly I found this book damn hard to put down so I’d have to say it’s a very good modern romance story.

I’m truly looking forward to reading the next book in the series Hard Luck Cowboy because it’s the story of Lydia and Colton, Sierra’s older brother. Lydia was the head of the Copper Ridge Chamber of Commerce and Sadie’s goodhearted rival for Eli Garrett’s affections in the first book in the series Part Time Cowboy. She was so kind and gracious with Sadie even as she was disappointed to know it was Sadie who had won Eli’s heart that I’ve been looking forward to watching her get her HEA as she’s made cameo’s in most of the series books. Colton seems like a really good guy so I knew he wasn’t going to end up with the witch he was engaged to in One Night Charmer. It also offers the opportunity to perhaps get another peak into the lives of Sierra and Ace and perhaps Madison West who was a wonderful secondary character as Sierra’s older sister in this book.

This book had 2 of my 3 most hated tropes: age gap and pregnancy. Which is a shame because parts of this book were really enjoyable, but I couldn't get past how much I HATE those two tropes. I have truly enjoyed only one of these books and at this point it almost feels like I'm hate reading them; but the one I enjoyed I really liked and I keep hoping for that same spark because obviously it can happen.

What happens when you put a grumpy, opinionated bartender and a spoiled rich girl together? Fireworks!!!

Ace Thompson owns his bar and he has some very opinionated views and some unresolved family issues. So when the spoiled rich girl of Copper Ridge comes to him looking for a job he has all kinds of feelings about that. When Sierra West discovers her family is not as perfect as she thought she goes out on her own and looks for a job. She has tried everywhere when she finally approaches Ace and ask for a job. Ace has his own opinions about rich girls. Put Ace and Sierra in proximity to each other and sparks will fly.

Ace has a personal policy against messing around with staff but the heat between him and Sierra is sizzling.
But when they give in to that heat there are some unexpected consequences and decisions to be made.

Both Ace and Sierra have some unresolved family issues that they need to deal with that will determine how things turn out for them.

This was two books in one. One Night Charmer is Ace and Sierra's tale to tell. He is the son of a preacher and owns a bar. Sierra is the little rich girl who has never wanted for anything. When a family secret comes out the damage with the relationship Sierra has with her father is irreparably damaged. Things are so bad she leaves their house and job and turns to Ace for a job in his bar. All that follows keeps the pages turning.

Hometown Heartbreaker is Casey and Aiden's story. Casey is a freebird and roams the country. When she tires of one place she moves on. Her car broke down in Copper Ridge so she is there until she can make enough money to repair it. When she meets Aiden she is drawn to him and figures he may be a distraction while she is in town temporarily. Of course you know there is more to it than that. You have to read the book to find out.
