Paranormal Days

The Werewolf of Grey Lake Inn

Rate this book
Astor is tired—tired of his family and the way they never listen to his advice, and tired of being in love with his agent, Tennyson, who after a one night stand made it clear he preferred to keep things professional. The only thing Astor's not tired of is his job researching haunted inns and hotels to prove just how haunted they're not.

His latest book is about a notorious inn in the middle of nowhere, and a haunting he suspects has more to do with real werewolves than fake ghosts. It will provide fodder for an excellent non-fiction book, the novel he's secretly writing, and be so distracting he'll finally be able to get over Tennyson.

Except when he arrives it's to find that Tennyson is already there, with every intention of keeping Astor company through the holidays.

This short read, clocking in at 14,000 words / 55'ish pages, was a lot of snarky and adorable fun.

We aren't told precisely how old Astor, the head of his vampire family is; however, he definitely feels that it's old enough that they should all listen to his advice on how to best live their lives, dammit.

At barely 30, Tennyson is Astor's literary agent, for his successful series of ghost debunking novels. He's hot and has a calming influence on both Astor's abrasive personality and his disgruntled little vampy soul.

Astor is delightfully bitchy, which Tennyson finds both humorous and endearing, unlike nearly everyone else with whom Astor comes into contact. (Yes, he tends to piss people off, to the tune of baseball bats and knives.)

The night before Astor was set to meet his new agent, Astor had an amazing one-night-stand, but Mr. Right was gone by morning.

I think we all see where this is going, right?

Yep, the new literary agent is none other than the irresistible Mr. Right from the night before, Tennyson, who Astor is now forced to work with, day in and day out.

Ahhh, the sexual tension is fucking delicious.

It's like the salsa on my enchilada. I would say mayo on my hot dog, but I'm not a sleazy, predictable man-ho.

Shut it, Dani, Jewel, Ele and Renee! :- P

Anyway, as I was saying, this was a very fun, short read for me, so if you're in the market for some snarky fluff, I'd highly recommend this 4-star story of vampires, werewolves and the men who love them.

This was a very cute novella. Astor, a writer, had a smoking hot one-nighter with a man whom he would've loved to spend more time with. But he woke up to an empty bed. The next day he met his new agent. And, of course, it was Tennyson, the dream man from the night before.

The story begins 9 months into their writer/agent relationship. Astor is arriving on location to do research for his next book, and Tennyson surprises him by already being in the hotel room next to him.

There is a paranormal element to this story that was interesting and didn't overpower the story at all. I loved Astor's snarkyness and Tennyson's ability to push right back or let it glance right off of him. There were some very sweet moments. Low steam in this one though.

Recommend.

I liked this story. The paranormal aspects were interesting, and well developed. I was surprised by how much I liked Astor. I'm not usually a huge fan of vampires, but I appreciated how his prickly nature seemed to hide a pretty caring heart, and how he wasn't the typically controlling jerk. The werewolf biology was interesting, and I liked how the gender politics seemed better balanced than in a lot of stories. I did end up wishing for more of a ghost story, but I can appreciate how that played out in a different way. I did still have some questions left unanswered, and some things felt resolved in an unsatisfying way, but a good story overall.

I wonder if I read this with a different frame of mind... which ended up with me finding Tennyson's nonchalant behavior over his predicament to be baffling.

I guess somehow, for me, despite the title which bears "paranormal", the setting felt contemporary enough that the supernatural beings didn't feel like a significant added value, you know? Astor didn't have to be a vampire. The werewolf could be just part of the fiction novel that Astor was writing ... and it all still came together. Because of that, for it being a paranormal romance, I thought this lack of both world-building and character build.

I read this review and I had to agree with her point of view. If this was written as fan-fiction, it might make more sense because in fan-fiction the characters and world-built are basically there as basis, and fan-fic readers know what they're getting into. But with original story that contains paranormal element, I'm always a bit miffed if the world-built, even for quick bits, is left behind.

PS: I just saw my rating for another Derr's entry in this "Paranormal Series" which is Herbal Remedy and I had the same issue! I guess this particular series might not work well for me indeed...

I received this book as an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for honest review.

Now, I feel a little bad about leaving a two-star review because it's not that this short story (it's much too short to be called a proper book) isn't bad for what it is, it's just not the kind of thing that I'm into. It's not a well-developed romance, it's not a plot-heavy book about supernaturals, it's a short story that involves romance and supernaturals and culminates in a hasty resolution and of course, sex. Basically, it's like a pretty well-written fanfic, but with original characters.

Unfortunately, even as someone who reads fanfic, this didn't really hit home for me. What I like about book is precisely what was missing from this one: character and relationship development, world building, and/or compelling plots. I understand that it's going to be hard to do this in an original short story, but I think it could be managed and was not. The reason I think some fanfic works despite being as short and sparse as this story is that the reader already has a schema for understanding the characters, their relationships, the setting, and therefore the writer doesn't have to develop those from the ground up.

Derr's story may have worked significantly better if we were already familiar with and invested in the characters and setting, but unfortunately, I wasn't, and I had a hard time caring when I didn't get much motivation beyond what was explicitly told to me in a very straightforward way. Did Astor and Tennyson have any reason to be into each other beyond "We fucked once, it was hot and also he's not repulsed by me being a vampire?" Why did Tennyson suddenly decide to make his move 9 months after the fact? Was Astor's fiction novel even relevant or was it just there so Tennyson could praise him so they could have a sweet moment before the sex? I felt like the question "Ok, but why do I care about this relationship/these characters?" was never answered well enough for me, and since it was obvious that they were going to end up together, there wasn't even any suspense.

Now, this isn't to say that this story didn't have some good moments or that it had no potential. My favorite parts were the bits about the real reason behind the haunting of Grey Lake Inn. Although the whole thing about the werewolves was only given brief attention as part of a conversation between Astor and Tennyson, that was by far the most interesting part of the story. If it had been a book about Astor solving the mystery of Grey Lake Inn instead of solving it neatly in about two sentences (and the romance with Tennyson was present but not the focus), I would've been super into it. I also enjoyed the short part where Astor was chatting with the young werewolf because it showed a little glimpse into some unique werewolf lore in this universe that might diverge from what's typical, and that stuff is super interesting to me. Unfortunately, all that was relegated to the side as soon as Astor so much as looked at Tennyson, and that's where I began to roll my eyes again. Both the plot and the characters had potential to be so much more interesting, but they were pushed aside in favor of the whole Astor/Tennyson sexual tension (which also could have been much more interesting, but that would require it being a longer story, I think).

On the whole, I wouldn't *not* recommend this short story, but I would only recommend it to people who know what they're getting into and are ok with that: it's about the length of a fanfic and very similar in that the "plot" is basically a flimsy (and underutilized, because it definitely had potential!) device to get to the gay sex. As someone who's a decent amount of this type of thing, but in fanfic form with characters I already know and care about, it's a little hard to really enjoy a story like this. If you want some bite-sized original mm fiction with a supernatural twist and aren't too concerned about plot, this could definitely fit the bill. But if you're looking for something a little more engrossing, this probably isn't it.

I've never read this short of a book before but I was pleasantly surprised. Just within the first few pages this book grabbed me and I had to exclaim "I love this book!"

The author is brilliant with her choice of words and her humorous phrases. That was one of the main things that really grabbed me. The characters are so funny in a British sort of way I instantly grew to love them and wanted to read more. Below is a few of my favorite quotes:

"He was going to enjoy every second of not having to manage the rampant stupidity afflicting the rest of his family."

"The entire place smelled like the bastard child of a florist and a perfume shop."

I love the plot line because it was unique and interesting. A paranormal mystery with angst romance set in a spooky, creepy inn high in the mountains with a blizzard on the way. You can just feel the cold and the creepiness while giggling at the under tones of witty dialogue.

I highly recommend this book. If you love m/m paranormal books with romance, mystery and witty and humorous dialogue then you will love this book.

This was a cute story about Aster who writes books trying to disprove hauntings, also he just happens to be a vampire. Then there was Tennyson who is human and his agent. Well they had something together not long ago and Tennyson hopes to rekindle what they had.

I have to say I loved Aster's snarky attitude and the dialogue between these two. I thought the author did such a good job with this story. Yes this is a short story but you get your humor, angst and sweet with this book and the way everything just fit so well together in this Novella I thought was perfect.

All together I really loved this Novella!
I would recommend this book!

I just couldn't get into it. Megan Derr's high fantasy and historical fantasy books are charming and engaging, but her contemporary pieces are not my thing. I couldn't like neither the story nor the protagonists. Maybe if the story was longer and we could get to know the characters better... dunno.

3.5 stars - Short about an author who is writing a book about ghost stories (which he doesn’t believe in, with proof) and him debunking them (while still hiding the fact there are werewolves, I believe.) The romance was cute, and while it still could have been longer, it seemed a bit more complete.

This book is a perfect example of why this author is a favorite. So much was given to us in this story that made it so interesting to read and you finish the book wanting more. As always with this author, I want more of this universe, of these characters, of everything. :)

3.5 stars. I really liked this short paranormal read with a hint of Christmas and a touch of supernatural beings. It’s a quick, easy read with only the smallest hint of mystery and a cute little romance.

Astor is quite a grump. He’s an old vampire in charge of his family, but no one ever listens to him or wants him around much. He’s tired and fed up and in love with a man who doesn’t want him. He just wants to look after those under his care, but since no one ever pays him any heed, he gets short and pissy with them, which makes him less than popular.

I actually quite liked him, even if I did wish there’d been a little more background information on how old he actually was, how his type of vampirism worked (since he eats food too) and just more about him really.

Then there’s Tennyson, his agent who turned him down after a one night stand. Yet he shows up at the inn with a nonchalant air, puts up with all of Astor’s snarking and generally makes himself perfectly at home. They’re a cute couple, even when Astor is trying to drive the other guy away, and there’s a nice hum of sexual tension between the two of them.

Because this is so short, there isn’t a lot of development. There’s not even a lot of romance, since things happen, then this, then that, and suddenly – oh: The End. I’d have loved more of pretty much all of it, to be honest, since this story feels more like a snap shot of established characters than a complete standalone tale.

But all that aside, I still enjoyed it. The characters are fun, the setting is creepy with a side-order of cynicism and I raced through it. If you’re looking for something quick with a snarky vampire, a hint of second chances and a ghost-story-that’s-probably-a-werewolf kind of tale, then give this a try and you’ll hopefully enjoy it as much as I did.

I started this book really thinking that I was not going to like Astor, I went back to reread Quality Assurance (I have the anthology), I remembered I really liked that one but I couldn't quite remember Astor. After catching back up, well, yeah he was a jerk. Seriously, he's a vampire that drives a corvette for heavens sake, total poser right?

Weeeeellll, he grew on me. I don't have any other explanation, just after we meet Tennyson he suddenly became adorable. His hopeless crush on his publisher humanized him somehow. It became clear his snarkyness was clearly a self defense mechanism for both Tennyson and his family, and after seeing how Tennyson reacted to it just made it all the more, well, CUTE! He was so proprietary about the novel he was writing, that gave him a depth of character that enhanced the snarkiness. It helped that I was also fascinated with his work and I really liked that he had a solid work ethic.

And Tennyson! I liked him on sight. Clearly trying to rebuild a bridge that he burned in error. And with fancy coffee! He was well drawn, had solid reasons for his past actions and made for a perfect foil for Astor.

The only issue I had with the book was its length and even that was mild since the history with Astor and Tennyson was conveyed via Astors thoughts at the start of the book. I would love to read any follow up on these two as they brave Tennyson's adjustment to being a werewolf, which were warned will not be an easy one for him. And I'm really interested to see how the family will react to Astor having a werewolf boyfriend. They're probably not going to give him an easy time of it!

This was a re-read and still worth every minute spent reading it! Astor is a particularly acerbic character, but he does that out of years of being a mother hen and frustration that people don't following his 'always right' advice. He has no problem dictating the love and life of his family, especially when his own love life has never worked out. His most recent failed love was an amazing night with the man who turned out to be his editor and then refused a relationship, not wanting to mix business and pleasure. Heartsick and annoyed at himself Tennyson goes to investigate his most recent book at a hotel in the mountains where he will likely get snowed in alone. But Tennyson shows up as well and confusingly is showing the type of friendly interest and affection that Astor hoped for form the beginning.

Astor is not an obvious character to like. He is sharp and short and way to sure of himself. But he is thorough in his investigations for his books, clearly making sure to right a good book and review regardless to whether he is debunking the haunting he is there for. Though he can be cutting to others, calling out things they have done wrong, he is also quick to forgive and makes sure they are setup to not make the same mistake again. His cynicism and bluntness hide the caretaker that he is to keep him from hurt. Tennyson sees past this and knows exactly how to soften him and how to push him at the same time. The two are quite the pair together, sharp and witty, but also soft at the edges and so willing to care for one another. Their story is short but the well established spark between them makes it easy to see that this is a second chance re-connection rather than started from scratch. Wonderful and funny read with a fun dose of the paranormal!

Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.

Astor is in love with his agent, which is a problem since the man wants to keep everything professional between them after an amazing one night stand. Desperate to give himself some space and time to get over his unwelcome feelings, Astor sets off to work on his next book at an inn up in the mountains. He doesn’t care that he’ll be there through Christmas, he just wants some time by himself. Pulling into the lot, all Astor can think about is getting his getting some work done while he gets himself together; finding out that Tennyson is already there waiting for him is an unwelcome surprise but that isn’t the only one his agent has in store.

Astor is a bitchy, grumpy mess and I loved him. He treats people exactly the way he feels they deserve to be treated and if that means yelling at them that they are stupid and wrong, he’ll do it without hesitation. I think that everyone wishes they could do that, at least some times, but Astor just goes ahead and lets it all out. Tennyson on the other hand is suave and spends a great deal of time smoothing over the ruffled feathers Astor leaves behind. He is also a sneaky, sneaky man but I enjoyed that about his character. The story was short but packed quite a bit into its pages; I enjoyed it from start to finish. I liked the paranormal aspects of it but wished I could’ve read more about it all. I also really would’ve liked an epilogue or something but that’s just me being greedy as the story ended in a good place. If you like your stories with a touch of paranormal or if you’ve enjoyed Ms. Derr’s works before, you’ll probably like this one, too.

Nestled in the mountains far from Astor's home is a haunted inn, the perfect place for a jaded vampire to forget about life for a while. It was a great plan too, right up until Astor discovered that his biggest problem had followed him there.

Astor's uses his calm, cool and collected exterior as a front to hide his softer side, the sentimental part that gave his love to Tennyson, and deeply hurt when his feelings were not returned. Determined to put the past behind him, Astor decides to channel his emotions into a new dream but a historical mystery, and the frustratingly perfect Tennyson, keep getting in his way.

Tennyson knows that he hurt Astor, and regrets causing him pain. He tried repairing the damage while maintaining professional boundaries but their working relationship is still strained. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so Tennyson corners Astor when he least expects it, steadily working to rebuild their friendship. At least… that's what he wants Astor to think.

Megan Derr pens a quaintly creepy setting for THE WEREWOLF OF GREY LAKE INN. This cute little paranormal mystery is short, so there's not a lot of character development, and the plot is straightforward. I wouldn't put it on my "must read" list but it's pleasantly entertaining and worth taking the time to read.

This was a great short story. Astor's a writer and vampire whose family is a pain in the ass. Astor had got involved with his new agent before the two met. So when Astor showed up to meet his new agent, Tenneyson they both sort of freaked out. Tennyson more so making it known it was a one night stand.

Astor's next book was debunking that a ghost actually existed at the Grey Lake Inn. When he arrived he noticed Tenneyson's car in the parking lot when the man was suppose to be somewhere else.

Astor's mad at Tenneyson for putting the night of great sex off as a one night stand. Astor treated his agent with little regard even though he'd rather kiss him, but Tenneyson never let it bother him.

Taking about the ghost and what had happened to the whole family, they both came to the same conclusion that the girl that was killed and her ghost thought to haunt the area was killed by a werewolf as was her family or she was the werewolf. There wasn't a ghost at all.

Tenneyson had even went with Astor as he did his research which annoyed Astor, but things had gone wrong and Tenneyson is bit by a werewolf.

I thought it was romantic that Tenneyson came to the Inn with a plan win Astor back. Which worked and it was even a bonus now that Tenneyson was a werewolf. Tenneyson blood was intoxicating, but add now with him a werewolf well that was a delicacy. I really enjoyed reading about the couple and their adventure and romance.

This is a terrific short read, full of snappy dialog and with a surprise or three up its sleeve. I'm a big fan of Megan Derr, and this is another good one.

Because it's so short, there's not a whole lot I can say without giving spoilers (there are a number of fun--and funny--surprises). I loved the premise of Astor's research to disprove hauntings and what he actually finds. It's definitely a good twist on the spooky and paranormal.

I adored the relationship between Astor and Tennyson. Their interactions were priceless. I'm not normally a fan of reading man drama where the two people can't have a reasonable conversation with each other, but this was well done. It was tongue-in-cheek and had a different feel from other similar setups. And of course, the payoff when they finally figure themselves out (or, well, when Astor figures himself out) is worth the journey.

I enjoyed the playfulness and humor, but as always with Ms. Derr, there's an underlying thoughtfulness. I'll leave it to readers to be delighted and surprised by the rest of the story.

Wonderfully sweet. I adored Tennyson's description of Astor as "the crankiest, fussiest, bossiest, and most well-dressed mother hen to ever walk the planet." As we got to see Astor quietly taking care of everyone in his life in the most ridiculously offensive way possible, and it was delightful.

These two couldn't be more perfect for each other, and it was fun to get to read their story.

Some Favorite Quotes:
"It says they're going to rebuild the cabin this coming summer, some historically accurate replica--"
"Replica implies it's historically accurate," Astor snarked.... "It's not a replica if it's not accurate. Then it's just a lazy imitation."

"but I only hate werewolves the way I hate everyone."

A different kind of short story. It was hard to get inside the characters heads. Or have any real empathy for them. They weren't bad people necessarily. But the author didn't make us really care for them.

So, by the time you get to the romance stuff, it just seems extraneous. I mean, if you aren't really rooting for the characters, who cares if they get together?

The story itself was interesting and different. It would have been a good story if I had liked the characters.

So, as much as I hate to, I give the story, the Goodreads 2-star, "It was OK."

This is only the second book of Megan Derr's that I've read but it has cemented my decision to further check out her backlist in the future. Astor is a snarky vampire who investigates and writes books on disproving haunted places, not exactly a character you read every day. Tennyson is his agent who decides to follow along with him on his latest debunking journey into Grey Lake Inn and the surrounding area. I loved the blend of paranormal, lusty romance, and a little history in the form of the story behind the ghost "sightings". The Werewolf of Grey Lake Inn may be short on words and pages but long on delightfully fun entertainment.

A light investigative trip, to more or less kill any credibility to a haunted site, leaves our frustrated main character having to deal with the company of his most horrible crush, his editor, who after a one night stand decided that things should definitively stay business related. Frustrating much?
I like the way everybody seems to know what's happening better that the main character, when in the end he's the one to find the right answers. And the touch of 'this is real life' until it turns weird? Simply perfect!

3.4 stars. The idea was not bad, but it read like rough draft that still needed a lot of expanding (and not because of the usual editing flaws). There is a lot of potential in the story and I loved that Astor is a vampire, but so many interesting things were just mentioned in passing or merely hinted at that I was seriously frustrated at a point ... Besides, Tennyson's reaction to the bite and it's consequences was just too casual to be convincing.

Read in the Bad Moon Rising anthology.

I would have loved this to have been a novel. This story was ripe for UST but only coming into it at the end meant we were robbed of that chance. Still a good story but could have been great.
