About the author

Hampton is a native St. Louis, with a gift and passion for writing. She maintained journals for several years, but it wasn’t until she read Terry McMillan’s Disappearing Acts that she considered taking her writing adventures to another level.



In 2002, Hampton completed her memoir, along with two fiction novels: Two's Enough Three's a Crowd and How Can I Be Down? The following year, she completed thrilling sequels to both novels and additional bestselling novels followed thereafter.



Hampton is known for bringing the heat to readers, and her literary career is filled with many accomplishments. She is an Essence Magazine Bestselling Author, she was named a Favorite Female Fiction writer in Upscale Magazine by O.O.S.A., she is a 2009 African American Literary Award Nominee for her mystery novel, The Dirty Truth, and was awarded Best Female Writer by Infini Promoters. the characters in this book have some serious issues all the way down to the child. With that said, office romance can cause so much damage. The way I see, they were all wrong. I live what Sylvia said to Britany about making choices, " As a young lady, you need to have respect for yourself. Nobody is going to give it to you but you. If you lose that respect, it's hell trying to get it back bc it will follow you for the rest of your life.... Life is about making choice, some good and some bad, but the bad choices are the ones that hurt us every time." And, even though Sylvia gave some good advice, she sure didn't follow it for herself.

HORRIBLE

I did not like this book at all. I hated the fact that the guy kept going back and forth between the best friends. I also hated the way the author made it seem like the guy was such a great person. Cheater= bad husband and/or bad boyfriend.

This was my first Brenda Hampton book. And after reading it I don't think i'll try another one of her books. This just doesn't interest me...

I guess the saying for this book would be to keep your enemies close but your "friends" closer. This is the first book that I've read by this particular author, and it was a pretty good read. There were parts of the story that weren't quite believable. It focuses on the lives of childhood best friends Sylvia and Dana. They've been friends since the second grade (or at least they put on the facade of friendship). Sylvia does the unthinkable when she initiates an affair with Dana's husband. As the old saying goes, "say way you get em same way you lose em." This book made me grateful to have the few true friends that I have.

Sylvia, Jonathan and Dana. Two best friends in love with one man. One friend is married to him and the other works for him.
I was really surprised how this story touched me emotionally. I didn't expect to feel any sympathy for the other woman, but the way Brenda Hampton intertwined these characters, you can't help but to try on the other person's shoes.

Wow, this book was phenomenal. Excellent characters with very vividly details to lots of surprising twisted backstabbing stories.

Each character, Sylvia McMillan, Jonathan and Dana Taylor, all had to deal with major jealousy that led to violent trust issues in their lives.

Jonathan Tyrese Taylor is smart, rich and boy he knows how to wear some clothes! Yet, he feels like he's going down, as he pictures his wife, Dana with someone else. Is it all in his head? He can't shake how she's no longer that comforting and loyal wife. Over and over again he's reminded of her smelling like cologne. She also can't seem to be reached by phone and those groceries she's claiming to buy never seem to make it home!

There has to be an answer. Now the question becomes who does the loyalty lie with?

Sylvia, Jonathan's secretary, just so happens to be Dana's BEST FRIEND. Sylvia's a hoody girl who is not afraid to get loutish with whomever, wherever! The friction is rising as Dana appears to be forsaking her good man! Doesn't she know about all of the women who would love to have him? What can Sylvia do? They're BEST FRIENDS! True Jonathan is more that the boss man, actually she value's their friendship. A friendship that is at times more substantial than hers and Dana's.

Sounds to me like there is a conflict of interest!

I can't get off my high horse, and I can't let you go...you are the one who makes me feel so real, OH what am I suppose to do when I'm hook'd so on to you...And I realize you're my BEST FRIEND'S GUY!

Dana's mind is so twisted up that she can't see straight. Maybe it's all the "mail runs!" Idiotic woman, she's too involved in her own external affairs, that she can't see that her friendship with Sylvia is diminishing and rapidly. Her marriage is also at a crossroads, and that secret isn't so safe! She's grossly underestimated her obligations with a costly recourse.

SUGAR, all it takes is just one taste...

Now with all this drama slowly brewing between Jonathan, Dana, and Sylvia those consecrated lines of marriage, and friendships seem to be severely damaged. Can they be salvaged?

While evading conspiracies, lies, and suspicion things appear to become repetitious. Makes you wonder... can a replacement ever be as good?

Tee has been saying that Brenda keeps it explosive! Can you believe that I doubted her talent? Brenda is SLICK with the way she mixes HOODY plots, schemes, and drama into the corporate and elite worlds.

Trust is EVERYTHING in a relationship and without it, two people can not move forward. Ladies, please stop telling your friends how good your man is in bed because then they get curious...and boundaries are crossed, and once temptation has won...it's hard to go back. This book is about two best friends. One single and one married. Well the married one is having an affair and the single friend can't believe how ungrateful she is when it comes to her handsome and successful husband. Jealousy begins to kick in and then one thing leads to another....I read this book in one day. I recommend ALL of Brenda Hamptons books

This was a very interesting book I enjoyed it very much. I just have one bit of advice to say don't mess around with your best friends husband no matter what and how you feeling this is a definite no no all across the board. That's a automatic beat down in that type of situation. I can't wait to see what happens in part 2.

I love Brenda Hampton's books, but this one let me down. It started off great and I didn't want to put it down. It got irritating when a main character from some of her other books was inserted into the story and had no real relevance. He could have been totally left out of the picture. Even though I love that character, it would be nice not to read about him in almost every book. At that point, the book seemed to drag on and on and I couldn't wait for it to finish it.

I liked this book and loved the karma even more. where some feel for Dana I for one do not. she had an affair for 3+ years and with her non working ass put her husbands money in her lover's bank account for Christ sakes and then wants to turn around and say how could you???I do sympathize at the fact that it was her best friend though out of everybody in the world. but from jump, she was snobbish and unappreciative of her lavished lifestyle and to let scum come in and throw it all away, that's on her and as for Lewis's deranged self...ahahahahaha!!!

All of the characters are a hott mess that do not care about consequences. Made it entertaining. Lots of 🌶🌶 with the characters commiting adultery having the most chemistry. At first Hampton write the Male Lead as this great man, but as time goes on you realize he is an opportunistic MOFO. He sees women as pawns in his game not individuals. The final conversation between the ex-wife and mistress the ex-wife hits the nail on the head.....basically now that he can have his cake & eat it too he will never stop....TRUTH! Yes, he loves to have some lame excuse as to why he commits adultey and his significant other deserves it because at the end of the day Jonathan is an asshole

I really want to give this one star but it's The Brenda Hampton and I'm just gonna assume she was going through something when she wrote this.

I hated every single character in this book. Everyone was horrible. Jonathan didn't need to be anyone's boss. The women were stupid. All the men in the world and you sleep with your "friends" husband? You're cheating on your husband and then get mad he doesn't want you anymore? Do people really live like this?

I listened to this from Libby and not sure what was going on but it repeated sentences many times throughout the book.

This is my first book by Brenda, and I must say this is one MESSY book! From the beginning to end. In the beginning, I actually liked Johnathan and Sylvia characters. Dana didn't like her character from the jump. but once the plot developed and the storyline. I was SO over all the characters, even the daughter Brittany! These characters are delusional and unhinged and not in the cute way either. I honestly don't know if I will read the 2nd book because I kinda wanna know what happens between Sylvia and Johnathan, but at the same time. I could care less.

With a Friend Like This, Who Needs Enemies?

You are an attractive thirty something year old female. You have your own home and a good job. But like most single females, you want the love of a good man. A man you can call your own. A man like your boss Jonathan Taylor. Jonathan is a successful attorney. He's smart. He's caring. He's funny. And did I mention fine with a capital F? He's everything you want in a man. But oops! Wait a minute. He's married. Married to your best friend Dana. Now you and Dana go way back. I'm talking elementary school way back. But Dana does not appreciate what she has in Jonathan. She's got a good man who loves her dearly and would do anything for her. Kind of like what you want. Instead of reciprocating, she's cheating on him with a loser ten years her junior. You repeatedly try to convince your girl to stop cheating. She just tells you to mind your own business and continue to cover for her. You're getting more and more irritated with your best friend. You think Jonathan deserves better. And he is becoming suspicious. So what do you do when he comes to you for answers? What do you do when your best friend's man comes to you for comfort? What do you do? You . . .

As with her other novels, Brenda has done it again! It's not often that you come across an author that is consistently putting it down the way she does. And she just keeps getting better. I was immediately drawn into this web of deceit and couldn't put it down. One day. I finished the book in one day. While I in no way condone hooking up with your friend's man (a definite no no and rule #1 amongst friends) or cheating on your spouse ~ the story was told in a way that you understood (not agreed) with the reasons for their actions. Great book!. If you haven't read any of Brenda's books - you better ask somebody!!

Lies..trust..friend..or foe. What happens when a wife strays and confides in her supposedly best friend to keep her secret? Dana Taylor had it all but felt her husband, Johnathan's job always came first. So what does she do? Stray..and confides in her best friend, Sylvia to keep the secret. But just what exactly will unfold when the husband and friend are the actual best friends of each other?!
Secrets get told,truths come out,lines get crossed and relationships destroyed. The question is..'how can you lose a good man?'That question is asked twice as Dana and Sylvia fight for the love of Jonathan but when we break down everything into the one simple word, trust; you will realize love can only go so far.

I enjoyed this read a lot. I'm amazed I could dislike Jaylin's character from the Naughty series for cheating but not Sylvia or Jonathan for their slick ways. I guess the circumstances about how they came about was different but it still was wrong. Though it had a couple grammatical errors, I still thoroughly enjoyed this read. I love the plot and the development of the characters as time progressed.I more so gave it a 4.5 because the ending seemed very rushed. Other than that even though I didn't like the ending, I could appreciate why things happened the way it did.

I really enjoyed this book but Sylvia was pissing me off. Considering everything Dana had done when it came to her and Jonathan's relationship I wanted nothing more than her to let him be happy with someone else. Dana allowed her own selfishness to push her husband away. I did like the fact Sylvia was truly trying to be a friend in the beginning and give Dana some advice before it was too late. Sylvia definitely took being there for Jonathan to new heights. Jonathan plated his little game for a moment but it was refreshing once he actually made a decision. Sylvia needed some type of help because she was going off the deep end with her accusations. Without trust there's really no sense in trying to build and I just hate the fact Sylvia played on how the relationship came about to do crazy things. I think the ending decision was for the best because Sylvia didn't so damage behind her craziness.

Well, it took me some time to finish this book, but at least I finally did. I had several moments where I picked the book up to read only to read a couple of pages and then put it down. This made for a good read after I was able to sit down and read it. It was an eventful read, but doesn't pick up until after a good 100 pages in. The ending is what made this a four star read for me because there is a bit of a plot twist. I had to download the second one on my Nook since I won't be making my way to a bookstore for awhile and I'm eager to know what's going to happen.
Would I recommend: If you can get past a slow beginning, yes.

Slick was OK. Sylvia and Dana are friends. Sylvia works for Dana's husband Jonathan. Dana is cheating on Jonathan with a guy that works in the mail room (for the same company as her husband). Sylvia wears tight, revealing clothes to the office. Even though Dana is her "friend", she finds the cheating she does unacceptable. So, what else is there to do but strut around her husband showing off her goods? I guess the premise is good. Could have been done differently. But, the read was short and kept me interested.
