'We live in a world that is hopelessly confused, torn, sinful. That's precisely when we can expect God to step in with a fresh outpouring of grace and love.'
In this book Brother Andrew draws from his own daring exploits around the world to help us catch the vision of God's purpose for his people today. Using the exciting account of Nehemiah as his inspiration, he brings his message with authority and hope for a troubled world.
This book is a challenge to proclaim the gospel without compromise. God has not given up on this world - and he is calling all his people to share in the advancing of his kingdom. Brother Andrew stresses that there are needs to be met everywhere, not just in Russia or China. 'You too can build in a broken world,' he says, 'right in your own back yard.'
Andrew van der Bijl (born 11 May 1928 in Sint Pancras, Netherlands), known in English-speaking countries as Brother Andrew, is a Christian missionary famous for his exploits smuggling Bibles to communist countries in the height of the Cold War, a feat that has earned him the nickname "God's smuggler". Brother Andrew studied at the WEC Missionary Training College in Glasgow, Scotland. Brother Andrew was born in Sint Pancras, the Netherlands, and was the fourth of seven children to a poor, near deaf blacksmith.
This book combines the book of Nehemiah with Brother Andrew's words to get into action. Brother Andrew encourages us to be active Christians, to be aware of The Calling He has given us, of the need around us instead of focussing on ourselves. This book teaches us (from a Biblical view) how we ought to respond to waiting, how He uses us as servants and prepares us for something greater.
This book is a loose commentary on the biblical book of Nehemiah. The author "Brother Andrew", is best known for smuggling Bibles into Commmunist countries. I starting reading this book to prepare for a Sunday School class I was teaching on Nehemiah. It was a useful supplement to my regular commentary (Kidner's commentary on Ezra and Nehemiah.)
