This book may not be the kind of thing you can discuss in polite company. How do we deal with it? What if a faithful approach to politics wasn't simply about who was going to win the next election? How might our political hope change when we encounter a God who offers us a different kind of kingdom?God isn't asking the church to be politically uniformed, apathetic, or even bi-partisan. On the contrary. God is asking us to be faithful citizens of the kingdom-a kingdom of surprising hope where the majority of God's work to save the world will be done.In Kings and Presidents, authors Tim Gaines and Shawna Songer Gaines helps us recast our political hope by challenging the claim that history is written exclusively by the powerful. Through a careful study of 2 Kings, we will find that trusting in God's faithfulness is plenty political, and it has real implications for our communities, the world, and the kind of political hope we can find in it all.Read this interview with the authors Tim Gaines and Shawna Songer Gaines Read Now
This is the first book that I have completed in 2021. I got this book 4 and a half years ago at Palcon. I have started and quit this book several time over those years. But, something changed last Monday before riots and talks of invoking the 25th amendment. Over the last week and a half I have been challenged by this book everyday and the scripture reading as well. I would recommend reading this book especially if you hate discussing politics.
Such a timely topic as our nation is rocked by political strife. Our pastor started a book club before the election this year and we have delves through 2 Kings during a church pandemic. This is rightly so a book more about holy living than politics but lends itself to lively debate about politics. Very interesting read!
Essential reading in divisive political times. The prophets have so much to say to us, even in an American context. Timothy and Shawna do an amazing service to the prophets they write about, and bring about timely messages for our context.
