How was he to know that the secret she guarded so carefully would one day be his fate as well?

What a little wren of a woman she was—huddled in that great cloak in the broiling hot sun! Was she daft? Or dimwitted? Or simply snobbish? Why didn't she help with the preparations for the long journey? Surely her sister-in-law had need of extra hands—what with the packin', and the movin', and the children.

Well, he'd find out Mercy Wheeler's secret on this trek to Indiana—or his name wasn't Ben Tasker!

This is a story of how scars define us. Some scars are visible, some are hidden, but each of us has scars that require we find a way to live while dealing with the devastation they cause. I love that these two people can find ways to deal with the scars that life hands them.

Mercy Wheeler is a 28 y-o woman who has spent half her life trying to hide the left side of her face from non-family members. Her physical scars are a cause of emotional distress around others. She lives with her brother, Daniel Wheeler and his family who are preparing to move from the Shenandoah valley to homestead in Indiana.
Daniel has arranged for a guide, Ben Tasker, to escort them on the way. Mercy finds herself attracted to Ben who has issues of his own. He is smitten by Mercy but cannot allow himself to act on his feelings.
The two are in love with each other but they won't do anything about it. Even a great tragedy does not bring them together. However, as they say, love conquers all.
