This is a course for those who have not learnt Norwegian before or those who want to build on existing skills. It assumes no previous knowledge of other languages and the emphasis is placed on communication skills. The course is based on the Council of Europe's Threshhold guidelines on language learning, and its graded structure includes exercise material. A cassette, recorded by native speakers to accompany the book, is available separately or together with the book as part of a pack.
Read, at least one time, but by 2 or 3 I'll get it (håper jeg)
Love the Teach Yourself series and have yet to find a better way to get up to speed with a new language. Restaurants, holidays, letters, e-mails and bittersweet romances between couples with children from previous ex-marriages. Gripping and educational!
This is an excellent resource towards giving you a good foundation with the Norwegian language, and a very good supplement for those who already have something of a working knowledge with Norwegian.
I'm in a bit of a unique position with my language-learning, but even so, I think this is an excellent guide to learning Norwegian. I first looked at this book over two years ago, the summer before I moved to Norway. I didn't get very far at the time - I didn't devote very much time with it and I got a bit bogged down by the pronunciation section at the beginning. However, I just bought the book with the CDs and now I'm already to the 5th unit after barely a week! I'm probably moving at a faster pace because I am familiar with the language after living here for two years and I am now devoting quite a bit of time to it. It's already made a difference in my confidence with the language, which is great. I'll update my review when I'm finished with all of the lessons. Of course, like all language learning books, it could use more practice, but it's a common fault. Overall, I think this is one of the better books for learning Norwegian on your own.
16 sections that cover almost every kind of situation make it a really good reference book to keep on hand. Also, given that it is an instructional language book, there is a surprising amount of plot twists and drama between the two main characters. No complaints as i think the drama actually helps you remember more of the vocabulary and phrases.
