One Holy Fire: Let the Spirit Ignite Your Soul

Rate this book
One Holy Fire is the dramatic true story of the work of God’s Spirit in one person’ s life–and how that same Spirit can revolutionize readers’ lives as well.

Nicky Cruz shares lively, never-before-published stories from his ministry that will quicken readers’ hearts and spark their souls. Stories of physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Of masses coming to salvation in Jesus Christ. Of hand-to-hand spiritual warfare. Of the supernatural provision and presence of God’s Spirit in every area of his life and ministry.

Cruz also explores the promises in Scripture regarding the Spirit’s work on earth, addressing such questions as What does it mean to “walk in the Spirit”? How does a supernatural God do business in a natural world? Why has the body of Christ been so slow to come to grips with the Spirit’s power and presence?

In One Holy Fire , the renowned author of the phenomenal Christian classic Run Baby Run introduces readers to the Holy Spirit. He challenges them to live according to the Spirit’s moment-by-moment guidance. And he inspires them to open their heart and let the Spirit ignite their soul.

Nicky was only 3½ years old when his heart turned to stone. As one of 18 children born to witchcraft-practicing parents from Puerto Rico, bloodshed and mayhem were common occurrences in his life. He suffered severe physical and mental abuse at their hands, at one time being declared the "Son of Satan" by his mother while she was in a spiritual trance.

When he was 15, Nicky's father sent him to visit an older brother in New York. Nicky didn't stay with his brother long. Instead, full of anger and rage, he chose to make it on his own.

Tough, but lonely, by age 16 he became a member of the notorious Brooklyn street gang known as the Mau Maus (named after a bloodthirsty African tribe). Within six months he became their president. Cruz fearlessly ruled the streets as warlord of one of the gangs most dreaded by rivals and police. Lost in the cycle of drugs, alcohol, and brutal violence, his life took a tragic turn for the worse after a friend and fellow gang member was horribly stabbed and beaten and died in Nicky's arms.

As Cruz' reputation grew, so did his haunting nightmares. Arrested countless times, a court-ordered psychiatrist pronounced Nicky's fate as "headed to prison, the electric chair, and hell."

No authority figure could reach Cruz - until he met a skinny street-preacher named David Wilkerson. He disarmed Nicky - showing him something he'd never known before: Relentless love. His interest in the young thug was persistent. Nicky beat him up, spit on him and, on one occasion, seriously threatened his life, yet the love of God remained - stronger than any adversary Nicky had ever encountered.

Finally, Wilkerson's presentation of the gospel message and the love of Jesus melted the thick walls of his heart. Nicky received the forgiveness, love and new life that can only come through Jesus. Since then, he has dedicated that life to helping others find the same freedom.

He reaches today's youth because they relate to his background, trust his peer authority, and respond to the message of hope he delivers with both passion and conviction.

Run Baby Run is Nicky's story in book form.

I love this book. Love it. Love it. Nicky Cruz's heart beats like mine does. Just his is a thousand times louder. Well probably much more than that. But after reading this very inspiring book, it's helped me to re-focus on reaching out to those who don't know Jesus.

All Christian know or should know that we don't get saved, find Jesus, just so we can make it to Heaven. We're on assignment. People need Jesus. We're to be involved in the process.

The book contains so many over-the-top amazing stories (worthy reading just for those) about what God does when the faithful give their lives to fulfilling the call to step out and engage, with love, those who have not found the Savior. Even a person who doesn't know Jesus would enjoy the stories.

One holy fire-yep got some by reading this book. Need some fire? Here's some fuel.

Having read Nicky Cruz's book back in the 1970s, this book caught my eye. He started with a street ministry to gangs in New York City, and he became a worldwide evangelist. He has felt the Lord leading him back to the ghettos, and has developed a successful street ministry in a very different environment, using tools available to him today. Bringing together teams from all denominations, his organization is taking the message of Christ to young people in ghettos across the United States. Nicky calls Christians to develop a new fervor for sharing our faith and making a difference in our communities. I found the book inspiring.

My mom gave me this book and I finally got around to reading it. The book is somewhat of a follow-up to Cruz's earlier personal work, Run Baby Run. In One Holy Fire, Cruz writes about his current ministry involvement and tells stories about miraculous works that have happened in peoples' lives as a result of their willingness to submit to God. It's an inspiring book and truly amazing to read about the transformations which have occurred in the lives of many people, particularly those in the inner cities.

The first and second part can be a little confusing, but the third part makes everything worthy!

If you're reading this it wouldn't harm to take it for a spin, it't definitely a quick read. Maybe there are some gems for you inside.

"Satan loves to taunt and ridicule helpless people, but when Jesus shows up, the devil quickly turns into the weak and pathetic loser he really is." ~ Nicky Cruz, One Holy Fire, Page 56

Initially, I thought this book was going to be about the Holy Spirit and His work; however, it became about Nicky Cruz's experiences in ministry and experiences he has had with working with the Holy Spirit.

There are many times in this book that I could sense the presence of the Holy Spirit and began to weep. Nicky Cruz's ministry is to the drug dealers, prostitutes, poor... He shares some lessons in ministry that we can learn from. For example, he tells of getting off focus for a while and how the Lord lead him back to what he was called to do...which was to minister to those in the inner city using tools like rap music...plays...and of course sharing his testimony on how God brought him from a life of drugs and the occult to serve him and how his life was changed.

I particularly liked the details he shared when he worked at a Teen Challenge House where men and women would come who were addicted to drugs and other substances and how they would cry in pain as they dried out. Nicky Cruz would lay his hand on them and ask God to take away the pain and comfort the individual. There are many testimonies of people coming out of the gang life and becoming witnesses for God through the ministry of Nicky Cruz.

I was looking on google for a picture of Nicky Cruz, as I have never met him in person and I found one that was quite touching. See the the following link for this picture of him weeping as he is ministering: https://www.flickr.com/photos/6980576...

I once heard Billy Graham say, "They will remember your tears, more than what you said".

Be ignited in your spirit by reading this book!

An interesting follow up in the story of Cruz. I didn't get as much out of this one as his original biography though it was good to see how he felt he has lived his life out since in light of it all and the ups and downs of family life in ministry. Still an inspiring read

Nicky Cruz has a great testimony of how God saved him. His ministry has been to inner-city, and even when he was taken advantage of (bookkeeper stole money, publishers have lied to keep money, etc.), he has not lost focus. I have enjoyed this book.
