Child grew up in Wiltshire as the middle child of three sisters and the daughter of two teachers. She has always been interested in the many aspects of childhood, from gazing into toy shop windows to watching American children's shows from the 1960s. After attending two Art Schools, she travelled for six months, still unsure about which career to embark upon.
Before writing and illustrating children's books Child started her own company 'Chandeliers for the People' making lampshades. It was only when she came to write and illustrate the book Clarice Bean, That's Me that she decided to devote her time to writing and illustrating books for children, which combines her fascination for childhood and her talent for designing and creating. Child gets her inspiration from other people's conversations or from seeing something funny happen.
Her book I Will Not Ever Never Eat A Tomato won the 2000 Kate Greenaway Medal. For the 50th anniversary of the Medal (1955–2005), a panel named it one of the top ten winning works, which comprised the shortlist for a public vote for the nation's favourite. It finished third in the public vote from that shortlist.

This was freaking adorable! Winner of the Best Big Brother of the Year Award goes to--drumroll please--Charlie! I loved pretty much everything about this book. I loved the kids, their relationship, the story, the moral, the art, all of it. The kids were precious and their dialog sounded genuine, especially the way the little sister talked, and how the older brother explained things to her, even if he had a wisdom beyond his years. I loved how you could tell how much they cared for each other, and how gentle the brother was. The story itself was joyful, and I liked the message that the story teaches, about how sometimes too much of a good thing is indeed, not a good thing. Also the art was quirky and colorful and perfect for this book. I highly recommend this to kids of all ages, and adults too.

Snow is my favorite and my best, too! Well, not really but I keep telling myself that! I love everything about Charlie & Lola...especially the memories of reading this (in my best British accent) to my kids.

Sadly, imaginary friend Loren Sorenson doesn't show up in this one, but Charlie and Lola are kooky little kids all the same. Henry is fascinated by snow melting, by making a snow dog, by sledding, by being sad and then not, by the fact that Santa Claus doesn't have a phone, by the idea of liking something "best". Basically we can barely get through the text what with all of his questions and comments and poring over the pictures and skipping ahead. He would probably rate this one five stars.

Ever since Charlie and Lola was created, I have been obsessed . Easy reads, with great illustrations that play a huge part in telling the story. I love how Lola is always portrayed as the mischievous little sister and how each book aims to explore the antics that she her brother Charlie get up to.

Pretty fun book. It was especially fun reading the upside down words without turning the book upside down.

Admittedly, I’m not a fan of the TV show, but Noah enjoys it, so it says a lot that he lost interest a few pages in. Such a long convoluted story, with attempts at making it educational around 75% in. Nah.

The irresistible comic duo of Charlie and Lola are here once more ... and I really REALLY like them!
The weather forecast has said it will snow (whenever are they right? - particularly in this rain-ridden "summer" of 2017!) and Lola is excited for she declares that snow is her favourite and her best and she wants it to begin immediately, never mind waiting until the following day.
Charlie says she has to wait until it gets cold enough to snow but Lola is impatient and when they go to bed she continually asks Charlie as they try to get to sleep - at least as Charlie tries to get to sleep for Lola is afraid to go to sleep for as she says, 'I can't because it might come while I'm sleeping.' She gets up throughout the night to check if it has started and eventually in the early hours of the morning the snow begins to fall. She is really, really excited!
She wants to go out and play in it at once but Charlie tells her to wait till the morning and then they can sledge with their friend Marv and his dog Sizzles. And he adds, 'You can build a snowman if you want.' Lola is pacified and when the morning arrives she wakes the household with shouts of 'It's all gone extremely white.'
The pair venture out and spot Marv with friend Lotta, who, with Lola, makes snow angels as Lola decries 'Snow is my favourite and my best.' Lotta agrees it is her best, too! They all go on a sledge, build a snowman and a snow doggy for Sizzles before they go home for some hot chocolate. Over their drinks Lola says that the following day she might put snowdog and Sizzles on the sledge for a ride and Lotta says that she will build a snow kennel to which Lola adds, 'Yes. We can have lots of snow puppies!'
But Lola is devastated when she goes out the next morning for all the snow has gone. They go home with Lola complaining, 'Why can't we have snow every day?' Charlie tells her that it is because snow is special rather like birthdays but Lola can't accept that for she simply asks, 'What's wrong with having birthdays every day?' Charlie tries to tell her that she wouldn't like snow every day but her answer is, not surprisingly, 'I would. Snow is my favourite and my best.'
The pair of them then imagine the Arctic and polar bears, one of which is going for a swim to which Lola says 'I'd like to go swimming. Where's the beach?' Charlie tries to explain that there is no beach and that it is too cold for swimming. So they imagine they are in the Antarctic and there are penguins, which Lola thinks are going to a party because they are so smart in their black and white. And she then wishes that she was wearing her party dress to accompany them but Charlie once more explains that it is too cold for that and she would have to wear her coat all the time. 'Oh yes, I forgot,' says Lola.
They imagine sliding on the ice with the penguins but Lola then wants to go home. Charlie can't understand this and asks why because he understood that snow was her favourite and her best. Lola says, 'I do like it, Charlie. But I'm just a little chilly!' So home they go where Lola explains that although snow is her favourite and her best she understands that if it did snow all the time there would be things that they couldn't do and she did not want that.
She is just a little sad because the snow has gone but Charlie makes her feel better with something he pulls out of the freezer. Can you imagine what it was? ...
Well, okay, I will give it away, it was a teeny weeny snowman. But he began to melt so Charlie suggests putting him back in the freezer but Lola wants to do something else with him and that is watch him melt!
Whatever, there is no doubt that snow is Lola's favourite and her best and Lauren Child's stories of the couple are really, really well up in the list of favourite and bests of mine!

I think this is a lovely book for EYS or KS1 children. The perspective is very much written from a child's and I think that it would be accessible for many children. The book is about Lola and her fascination and love of snow. She would like it to snow everyday but her very loveable brother Charlie helps Lola realise that it would not be as exciting or special if it was snowing everyday. He gives her many different scenarios and places of where it snows everyday and she soon realises that it should only happen occasionally so she can look forward to it.

We LOVE sharing "Charlie & Lola" stories in our library story times. We have two performers -- one who takes Charlie's part and one who takes Lola's part.
I gotta say, the pre-school age children don't get the page where Charlie and Lola are pictured upside down while standing in Antarctica. The children kept prompting us to turn the book the other way.

I think this is my second favorite Charlie and Lola book. Charlie gets to be a fantastic big brother, at not too much cost to himself. But I'll read anything by Child, honestly.

This is a very good story which I liked a lot but its flaw is so significant I can not over look it. Lauren Child uses bad English in numerous lines of the book. Teaching children to speak correctly is so important for their future success, I find this totally unacceptable no matter how realistic it might be.

As a child I read the charlie and lola book set and it's fun and a good read for younger kids I highly reccommend it! It's all about lola's adventures and she has a brother called charlie. Its a good book for anyone that can read or listen to a story read to them :D

Characters are known by the students and they enjoyed the different graphics for the pictures, not being your typically hand drawn illustration. Good for getting them interested in reading for fun and answering questions about the story.

This book is about the night before snow and what to do in the snow. this is a good book to engage older children's story writing. This can encourage them to write about the weather an dhow it changes due to the seasons and how they feel about these changes.

This book was interesting because it had lots of lovely pictures including Charlie and Lola and their friends having a lot of fun in the snow. I like all the Charlie and Lola books.

This brother and sister relationship is really sweet. The way Charlie helps Lola realize why things feel special is nicely done. The mixed media illustrations are kind of wacky and fun.
