Oliver Nocturne #4

The Demon Hunter

Rate this book
It’s scary to know the fate of the world lies in your hands—but even scarier to learn that it might be in your brother’s

It’s the last night of summer and Oliver is hoping to have some fun with his two best friends. Once school starts, he’ll be one step closer to receiving his demon . . . and fulfilling the prophecy to open the Nexia Gate.

Meanwhile, a series of gruesome animal attacks on humans has threatened to expose the vampire world. The evidence points to Oliver’s brother, Bane, who has recently acquired Occupying power—the ability to inhabit animals. Yet Oliver, Emalie, and Dean suspect something else is going on—a sinister plot that involves Oliver’s destiny, and possibly the mystery surrounding his human parents. Bane may hold the key to Oliver uncovering his past and changing his future—if the Half-Light Consortium doesn’t get to him first.

Oliver is dreading the start of the new school year. The last night before school is to start; he plans on meeting his friends Dean and Emalie at the zoo. While Oliver is waiting by the bat cages, police bust into the room, obviously searching for something. Oliver hides and then follows them outside. He runs into his friends, and the three hide in the bushes, watching the police action.

A boy around their age has been murdered. They overhear that they believe a jaguar has killed the boy. Oliver starts to have troubling thoughts. He ran into his brother Bane (aka Charles) on his way into the zoo. And Bane was occupying a jaguar. Oliver stumbles across a pendant with ancient markings on it. Figuring his brother had been wearing it, he pockets the necklace, and the threesome discreetly leaves the zoo.

As the days pass, other kids are murdered. And all signs point to the same jaguar. And to make matters worse, Bane hasn't returned home in days. Oliver's parents start to worry and go searching for Bane. When the Half Light come asking questions, Oliver keeps quiet, and then fills his parents in on what he knows. When his parents refuse to let Oliver help in the search, Oliver enlists the aid of his two friends.

Emalie is having problems of her own, controlling her Orani powers. And Dean's master, Lythia, has returned, calling Dean to serve her. Oliver now has to wonder who he can and can't trust. After obtaining information from the library, Oliver learns that Bane is being held inside the jaguar by a Nagual demon. After getting guidance from Dead Desiree, Oliver and Emalie seek out Bane.

The three friends come together to aide in releasing Bane from the jaguar. But along the way, Oliver must confront more of his history and his destiny. He believes Bane is trying to steal the prophecy from him, but Oliver may be further from the truth than he ever expected.

THE DEMON HUNTER kicks up the action and suspense a notch from the previous books. Oliver and his friends are developing their powers and stepping up their fight against those that are battling against them. The plot continues to build and now readers must wait for the continuation in THE ETERNAL TOMB, due out in April 2009.

I am just starting this one now, I haven`t read it before. It is the fourth one in the series.

11-24-10 Pages 67-86
I bet Bane is not behind the attacks becuase even though he is never around during the attacks he always seems to actully be doing something good. I think Lythia is doing it.

12-5-10 Pages 134-155
I wonder what will be in Bane's head? I am very curious. I don't think the necklace will work on Dean because he is dead, so it might have a different effect. Also, I think all the kids that were murdered by the Jaguar will be risen to zombies because on page 153 Oliver and Emalie see Dean with the first victim running an errand for their master.

It amazes me that such a good story can come out of only 209 pages. It took a twist that I didn't see. I wish that the library had the next book...what am I going to do now?

In continuing the journey of Oliver, a vampire teen who is meant to fulfill a prophecy, this book focuses on a string of murders supposedly commited by a possessed jaguar. When Oliver's older brother Bane is set up as the scape goat, Oliver and his friends have to figure out who is on their side and who isn on anybody's side. A nice continuation of the Oliver Nocturne series. A nice vampire style book for preteen and up readers.
