The media announced Winehouse dead the day I finished the book. I wasn't shocked (how could anyone be?) but I was disappointed because I thoroughly enjoyed her music. Her story is of course a tragic one and all too familiar. Although I was interested in her career and wanted the best for her as a person, it was the music and her raw talent that mattered to me. She was too young but I had an intuition that she wouldn't make it through the madness of her life. The book was ok, but had many typos and what appeared to me as inconsistencies. However, the impact of her short and controversial career was not lost on this music lover. Hers was a true sad story with no hope of redemption and spoke volumes about the volatile combination of personal issues and the reality of celebrity.

I love Amy Winehouse, but this book was not a well written account of her life. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

An unauthorised account of Amy Winehouse’s life written before her death. It’s quite a good collective of quotes from papers, reviews, meanings of song lyrics but as a story of her life it is very impersonal. You can tell he has no insider knowledge but has just spent the time carefully compiling the information. A reference book rather than a book written with any feeling.

A really insightful read which is very well researched and reveals Amy's demons from her first breakup which led to her writing songs for her first album Frank through to her meteoric rise to fame and all the dramas that went with it to her untimely death at only 27.

If you are interested in the music business this is a good read. Talks a lot about the details of her career and recording sessions and artistic creation that went into the music. All this peppered with interesting biographic info of Amy.

Great picutes, lame text. Might be too soon for books like this. Give Amy a change to die or recover first.

A book about the life and career of one of music's most captivating figures and one of my favourite artists, Amy Winehouse.

Johnstone, not only covers her musical journey with so much details (some details I felt were unnecessary), but also covers the darker aspects of Amy's life and her struggles with addiction, relationships, and the pressures of fame.

Everything about her screamed "help me!". I can only imagine the emotional and mental pain she was going through at such a young age, and numbing the pain with wrong choices.

The book leaves readers with a deeper appreciation of Amy Winehouse's musical legacy.

3.5 ⭐️

The book was better than I was expecting it to be, especially considering the fact it was written while Amy was alive; I thought perhaps the author would be harsher and ruthless, as journalists were until that attitude sort of gave place to shame and guilt when she unfortunately passed.
Definitely lots of research and insight, but essentially focused on her music. I wish he had written more about her life.

In perspective, a tasteful but short biographic book. Probably not the best written essay about Amy´s life, but I don´t regret at all reading it.
