Frommy generation to yours; these are the stories of my experiences as a B-17Bomber Pilot and my crew from the start of war in Europein 1939 to the end of hostilities. Therecollections from this period of my life reflect peace-time draft, war-timedraft, basic training, life on base, the formation of my crew and the waritself. This is my gift to my children, my grandchildren, great grandchildren and generations yet unborn. History books will not present the details ofthe lives of the crewmen of the 351st Bomb Group and what they wentthrough during World War II. I feel itis an important aspect of history yet untold. Enjoy my memories . . .
I have been doing some research with my wife on her step-grandpa (Vernon Palmer), who served in 1944 as a tail gunner of a b-17 flying fortress. I found the website dedicated to the 351st bomb group and found the list of Vern's crew. I started to look up the whereabouts of the crew starting with the Captain, James J. Redmond Jr. Unfortunately, I found the website of his obituary and was sorry to read that he is no longer with us. To my amazement, I saw that he had written a memoir. I looked at my wife and said, "Oh honey, Vern's captain wrote a memoir!" We immediately bought a copy and I even found a copy that was signed by Captain Redmond. What an amazing story that he told and a life that he lived. Vern Palmer was talked about many times in the memoir and we shared it were her Grandmother (who is now 92 years young). She was delighted and even said that she recognized the nickname "Reddo" and that Vern had talked about him before. The last few weeks have been very exciting in our home and for our family. This memoir is a tribute to the bravery of a great American generation. To James "Reddo" Redmond Jr, your memoir will be in our bookshelf next to the books that special to us. Thank you to Reddo's Raiders for your service.
