One of the most inspiring “biographies” in the Bible. Nehemiah is a strong, courageous, Godly man, and he has so much spiritual and practical wisdom to share!

For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

“Nevertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God.” Nehemiah‬ ‭9:31‬ ‭KJV‬‬. ~The entire 9th chapter has so many reminders of God’s character. He is just, but he also shows great mercy toward his children.

“So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.” Nehemiah‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬. ~ I love this picture of teamwork and cooperation. Everyone having a mind to work the task at hand.

The words of Nehemiah, son of Hachaliah. He was a cupbearer (poison taster) to Artaxerxes the king of Babylon. After hearing that Jerusalem was broken down he petitions the king to send him to Jerusalem to rebuild the city.

Sounds very similar to parts of Ezra doesn’t it? That’s because it’s the same event from different people working toward God’s goal of restoring Jerusalem and His people to Israel.

It this book, Nehemiah goes to Jerusalem with materials and gold that the king sent with him. There he finds that the builders are under attack and sets up a way for them to both build and defend themselves. I love how he has certain families/ groups assigned to each section of wall.

Later when the wall is finished it is blessed, officers are appointed to guard the gates and a count is taken of the people. Then Ezra read the law to the people after which they have a great feast, followed by the people confessing their sins and resealing God’s covenant with Israel.

Now here’s something I don’t quite understand. The cast lots as to who will live in Jerusalem and who will live outside. I’m not sure from the context as to which was considered the best. I guess it depended on how each person felt.

After that all the priests and Levites are organized unto their service and some abuse of the law was corrected.

Fave parts: the listing of who’s repairing what going all around the city and half the workers working & half holding weapons.

Nehemiah recorded the reconstruction of the wall of Jerusalem. He directed the political and religious restoration of the Jews in their homeland after the Babylonian captivity. Nehemiah was a great leader, he overcame opposition from outsiders as well as internal turmoil. He exercised his administrative skills in his strategy to use half the people for building while the other half kept watch for the Samaritans who, under Sanballat, threatened attack. As governor, Nehemiah negotiated peace among the Jews who were unhappy with Persian taxes. He exhibited a steadfast determination to complete his goals. Accomplishing those goals resulted in a people encouraged, renewed, and excited about their future.

Nehemiah knew how to pray and he asked God to remember all the thing that he had done for His people and to bless him for them.

Bless the name of Jesus!

What a great book Nehemiah is - a primer on prayer [there is one in every chapter], a log on leadership, a feature on faith and of course, a part of the inerrant, inspired Word of God!
