Sometimes it takes awhile to see what's right in front of you... The year is 1999 and Elly Palmer and Kent Lytle are embarking on their senior year of high school. Their lives change forever when a stranger comes into town riding in her candy apple red Audi Cabriolet. Jen Derby wants one thing: Kent. And no one is going to stand in her way, not even his best friend "Elly-phant." When winning Kent's complete attention isn't as easy as she thought it would be, Jen fights back with a vengeance. The poison-laced smiles Jen threw her way made one thing clear to Elly: Jen isn't the one for Kent. How long would it be before Kent saw Jen for who she really was? And when he did would he turn his attentions in Elly's hopeful direction? Read the beginning of their story in this high school novel.

I wasn't much of a fan of this. The characters felt younger than high school seniors. I know that it is hard to know if the person you are crushing on is also crushing on you. I know it can be even harder to figure those feelings out when said crush is also your best friend. With that being said, at some point you have to just make the feelings known instead of driving yourself crazy trying to analyze every move the person makes. That is what both characters do in this. They constantly in this tug of war of emotions within themselves. Each thinking they know how the other thinks about them. I don't know it just left me feeling like...meh.
This is a wonderful story. The entire thing will absolutely break your heart and then glue the pieces back together with each word! Must read all three!
So "Ellyphant" for those that might not know is also known as "HS Old Friends," a book you can get free for signing up for Marie's newsletter or with an audible trial, Marie also told me that it comes with the purchase of the box set of the series. It's not necessary to read this before starting the "#JustFriends" series though it certainly doesn't hurt.
This book takes us back to high school and the start of senior year for Kent and Elly, and when Jen moves to town. Kent and Elly have been best friends since early childhood. Now that they are teenagers they are still the best of friends and know they can always rely on each other. So what's the problem? First off they both like each other but like most shy teenagers neither is willing to tell the other their true feelings for fear of rejection and losing the person that means the most to them. Second, Jen the new beautiful blond who just moved to town and has immediately set her sights on the "nerdy boy" Kent. She can see, even if Kent is to blind it, that Elly has more than just friendly feelings for Kent and that makes her jealous. Not that she should be Kent is completely blinded by the fact that the "new hot girl" has the hots for him.
Now I personally hate it when a review contains spoilers so I will try my best not to give any. Though if you have already started the "Just Friends" series anything that happens in this book isn't really that much of a spoiler.
If you are looking for an HEA your not going to find it in this prequel. Though I guess that would be obvious because otherwise where would the story be. Instead it is the story of two "outcasts" who just wanting to survive their last year of high school without to much humiliation, and that the person they love just might finally notice them.
I personally find Kent's inability to stand up for himself with Jen very frustrating. He allows her to run his life and his friendship all for fear of losing her. Though it is also not unlike some teenage boys, even some grown men for that fact, to do so. Though it is just as frustrating to see Elly doubt herself and cast her own feelings aside, but again as women, teen or adult, we can tend to do this.
Kent is your "average" nerdy boy, he likes video games, horror movies and then there is the large boob porn. Elly likes to sing but doesn't really share her talent with others. Jen is your "typical" popular spoiled rich girl that is use to getting her way and what she wants no matter the cost. If explicate and detailed sex scenes are a problem for you then you are forewarned that they exist. There are a few strong curse words also. Otherwise if you can look past those things pick up the box set, join Marie's newsletter mariecolebooks.com or grab the audio version and give this prequel to the "#JustFriends" series a try, of course you'll need to move on to the series itself afterwards which at the time of writing of this review the first book Just Friends is free on Amazon. I will be leaving a review of that book also.
I've not read others in the series, but it's clear that Ellyphant is 'second chance love - the high school years.' In other words, without the first chance there wouldn't be a second chance.
The narrative was at its strongest when Whether that choice was a good idea or not isn't for me to say (I'd like to think I'm smarter than a teenager). What is clear though is that for the character the decision was valid - and made sense in terms of the narrative. And that, for me, was the moment when the narrative went from being simply another high schooly teen-angsty 3 part drama, to something more than that. It was also the time when the narrative choice (of alternating 1st person POV) started working. Because it let us see
It was cute but sad and truthful story about high school kids. I enjoyed reading it, it made me smile, cry, laugh, upset with the way Elly was treated by not only other students, but by her so called "best friend". Neither wanted to lose the other, but weren't mature enough to tell the other how they felt. So in the end they lost each other anyway! :-( I'm NOT a fan of cliffhangers, but you left it off with a "hopeful" ending, in which it could continue or not.
This high school novella is funny and heartbreaking at the same time. Since I've read Unrequited and Epiphany I know that this situation will continue for a while but, If you stick to the series, there is a guaranteed HEA.
