Will love weather the storms in this high-country romance?
In the shadow of Black Peak, Carr Fergusson's grand old homestead is in need of a housekeeper. When shy, city-bred Cally Jones arrives at Glencairn Station to take the reins, she discovers not only a new way of life, but a house packed to the rafters with romantic intrigue.
Carr's son, Ash, has finally seen fit to return to the family farm, and it's not just Cally's head he's turning. But what has really brought Ash home? And what ghosts lurk in his past? Is Cally the girl to heal his heart, or will her own heart be broken?
Just up the hall, beautiful, independent Ella Harrington is playing with fire as she tries to juggle the demands of her new career with her love for her gorgeous bad-boy boyfriend. Where will the sparks fall? And who will get burnt?
Meanwhile, intent on everyone else's problems, will Ella's mother, Lizzie, be too slow to see the clouds looming over her own horizon? Can Lizzie's relationship with the newfound love of her life weather the coming storms, or will the differences between them tear them apart?
Love and loyalty are strained to breaking point in this new high-country adventure from the author of Blackpeak Station.
Holly Ford was raised in southern sheep country, spending her childhood and early adult years among hill properties of varying sizes. Like most New Zealanders, she has always loved the South Island's high country, and admired the women and men who work it.
This was the first of the Blackpeak books I read, and it drew me in so far, I was grateful there were more trials and tribulations of this community to discover. Now for the next one!
This whole series is a great read, with more than one couple working through their romances, getting things wrong and sorting them out in the end. There's plenty to get involved with. As someone who is familiar with the area these stories are set in, it annoys the heck out of me that I can't actually pin down where exactly we're supposed to be, but the high country lifestyle feels very authentic. I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with the Blackpeak neighbourhood. The romance was sweet and satisfying too.
To be honest, my own personal bias is upping the stars here. The writing had some fairly serious issues on occasion (the constantly going back in time to pick up another character's perspective was particularly grating) and I feel the story would have been better if at least one of the three couples had been cut in favour of fleshing out the others a bit more.
BUT as an expat New Zealander who misses the highcountry like crazy, this definitely satisfied my need to have a slice of the stations and NZ farm culture back in my life. From the very first page (where a character was described as having the build of a loose-forward), to scenes of rescuing sheep via helicopter, it felt like being back home. And I'll probably get around to the rest of the series just for that reason.
Loved this one! This ties up all the loose ends of the previous two books nicely, but leaves the way open for a potential fourth book.
Holly Ford remains one of my favourite Kiwi authors, and undoubtedly my favourite rural romance author. Her ability to tell a tale and her obvious familiarity with NZ's high country makes the Blackpeak books fantastic reads. The romance is sweet, the heroes ruggedly handsome, and the plot moves along quickly.
This book unfortunately was so predictable and boring but i had nothing else to read at the time. I knew every page what was going to happen, dribble and aren't there enough books like this out there. How on earth this book is taken seriously in dont know NZ .. it is so far fetched , everyone is beautiful everyone is perfect ...get real and start writing ...
