Jesus spoke words of life and truth. How well are you listening?
True listening isn’t simply hearing the words of Jesus; it involves belief that results in active commitment. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus interacted with people from all walks of life. In every case, those individuals could choose to believe His words and reap the rewards of faith—or resist the truth and miss out on everything that truly matters.
This same choice is yours today. In this second book in a three-part study of the gospel of Mark, you can read for yourself the words of Jesus in Mark 7–13. If you then align yourself with the One who is truth, you’ll experience for yourself the freedom that comes from truly listening for and following the voice of the Savior.
Kay Lee Arthur was an American Christian author, Bible teacher, and co-founder of Precept Ministries International. Renowned for her accessible and inductive approach to Bible study, she helped millions engage deeply with Scripture. Arthur began her ministry informally, teaching teenagers in her living room alongside her second husband, Jack Arthur. Their work soon grew into a global outreach, headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, under the name Precept Ministries International. She hosted the daily Bible teaching program Precepts for Life and became a respected voice in evangelical circles. Arthur authored numerous books and was a four-time winner of the ECPA Christian Book Award for titles such as A Marriage Without Regrets and The New Inductive Study Bible. Her ministry was rooted in a personal reawakening to faith in the early 1960s, following a divorce and a return to religious life. She and Jack also served briefly as missionaries in Mexico before founding their ministry. Arthur remained active in public faith-based initiatives into her later years and was known for her firm stances on social issues. She passed away on 2025 leaving behind a lasting legacy in Christian education and publishing.
Kay Arthur and David Arthur have created a six-week no-homework small group Bible study that walks the group through Mark 7-13.
Even though there is no homework, the study introduces the principles of Inductive Bible Study. This Bible Study could spark a small group member’s interest in a more in-depth study, like a Precept Upon Precept Bible Study.
Small group members observe Scripture, mark specific words and phrases, and discuss their observations. Key insights into the background of the topic or the culture help participants understand the Scripture more fully. For example, week one introduces us to the scribes and Pharisees, their devotion to the Law and the traditions of the religious life. (P. 4)
Throughout the study, we are encouraged to question our understanding and learn from the Scriptures.
What we learn from how Jesus responded to questions. What we learn about Jesus from His words and actions. What we learn about ourselves as we meditate on His words and apply them to our lives. “The life and ministry of Jesus pointed to the great reversal of power, displacing the world’s preconceived notions about societal ranks and what was truly important.” (p. 63).
Each week examines a topic that prompts us to listen deeply to Jesus:
Are You Giving Priority to Jesus or to Tradition? Who Is Jesus and What Will It Cost to Follow Him? “I Do Believe; Help My Unbelief” What Do You Want More Than the Kingdom of God? How Much Love Does Jesus Want from You? Listen Carefully: The Son of Man is Coming.
True to Scripture, Jesus: Listening for His Voice, is a great small group Bible study or a solo Bible study for busy participants.
Kay and David Arthur have provided a valuable tool for Bible study that asks for more than study … it asks for an assessment of our understanding of Jesus and His words and of what we value.
I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review. I have been a Precept Upon Precept Bible Study leader

Each day’s lessons are the perfect length for those just beginning to learn to study the bible. This short study has no homework, a small group can work alone and then discuss or meet for each lesson and work together as a group. Highly recommended for new learners of the inductive method. Those wanting more in-depth studies will probably want to skip this study and use Kay Arthur’s Precepts Study, Experience the Miracles of Jesus: Mark.
