Cyprus: The Other Divided Island

Rate this book
At the time of writing, intensive talks continue on re-unification of Cyprus. While these are the most promising in a decade, there is no guarantee of their eventual success. This book among many other things details the various efforts over more than 60 years to 'solve' the Cyprus 'problem'. It emphasises that this problem is not the supposed inability of the majority Greek and minority Turkish communities to live together but rather the manipulation of these communities by foreign interests, especially the Turkish one by Turkey and colonial Britain. This, aided by NATO's priorities, led to the Turkish invasion and partitioning of the island in 1974. Central to the book is the role of Cypriot leader Archbishop Makarios in bravely attempting to protect Cypriot interests against overwhelming external and internal odds. An Irish viewpoint informs the writing throughout.
