A really good read aloud for kindergarten to begin my "Life Cycle of an Eagle" tie in to kindergarten's bald eagle as an American Symbol standard. There are great vocabulary word (we pay particular attention to "talons" and "perch") and while I'm not focusing on text feature I do call several by name (maps, bold print words, sidebars). It also has pictures of all the stages of an eagle life even though I use a few more divisions than they do. I read it on getepic.com, and show both the eagle song on get epic and then go to webcams of eagles to show each stage of the life cycle.

The content includes easily read material, each page not having more than 20 words, and bolded vocabulary words for easy reference in the glossary. The book is also easily navigated thanks to a first page table of contents as well as a glossary and index in the back. The back matter also includes references for further information, including both hard copy books and a website that hosts links to many additional sites. In the body, Bowman provides information about their habitats and lifestyle, their anatomy, their courting and breeding habits, and their eating habits. The photography is fairly high quality: mostly close-up, straightforward shots of single birds, but some of them in groups, including one of a female and male locking talons as part of their courtship. In addition to the photos, some clearly drawn charts and a map are also included to give a good visual perspective on the facts about the animals.
