Wild Women of Maryland: Grit & Gumption in the Free State
The daring women of Maryland made their mark on history as spies, would-be queens and fiery suffragettes. Sarah Wilson escaped indentured servitude in Frederick by impersonating the queen's sister. In Cumberland, Sallie Pollock smuggled letters for top Confederate officials. Baltimore journalist Marguerite Harrison snuck into Russia to report conditions there after World War I. From famous figures like Harriet Tubman to unsung heroines like "Lady Law" Violet Hill Whyte, author Lauren R. Silberman introduces Maryland's most tenacious and adventurous women.

A short but interesting compendium of wild women hailing from Maryland. The author writes in a tone that is professional, but more lively than your typical history text. I appreciate how she arranged the chapter by theme, defined 'wild' broadly, and was able to discuss morally ambiguous women (whether from the perspective of their day, from our modern historical perspective, due to the lack of well-rounded details, etc.) as people who were still interesting and history-makers.

Recounts many of the women of note from Maryland history - noteworthy and notorious! From the early 1600's Margaret Brent arriving in the colonies and holding land to Wallis Simpson and Barbara Mikulski, Harriet Tubman, civil rights pioneers, and pub owners in the 1700's, this book gives insight to the roles women have played in the state's history!

A short read on the history of some truly incredible — and some villainous — women from Maryland! I knew a few of these like Harriett Tubman, Lillie Carroll Jackson, Mary Pickersgill, Wallis Simpson and Divine — but a lot I didn’t know!
The section on witch hunting in Maryland was particularly interesting to me!
