My Little Pony: Equestria Girls
Ted Anderson
Comic

Review: First off I have to say that if have not seen the movies that this comic is based on then you may not understand my opinion about this comic. If you have watched the movies then you may be a bit annoyed like I was at this comic. Even if you have never watched the movies this story can still be confusing.
I have to say that I loved the second half of the comic. It really shows the friendship between all of the girls, including their newest friend, Sunset Shimmer. If this comic had stuck with just the second party of the story I think it would not have bothered me as much, but it did not. Instead it had the first part which shows Sunset Shimmer in her role before she became friends with Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie. Then the second half jumps right in with them being friends. This makes it very awkward. Especially if you know what's going on, because they do not bridge the gap between the original Sunset Shimmer and the New Sunset Shimmer. If you don’t then maybe you would believe they were all already friends in that first part, which will really annoy you if you watch the movies afterwards. I guess there was one redeeming quality to the first part, and that is the fact that it gives us the backstory on how they became friends in the human world , which you don’t get in the movie.
I think the artwork was great and vibrant. It really drew the eye and made me want to see the rest of the art. Also I loved how detailed the artwork was. I made you focus on what was important to the dialogue.
This story is cute and an easier read. For true fans of My Little Pony you might be a little annoyed like I was how they jumped from one thing to the other, but the two stories are both well written and worth reading.

I received a free ecopy of this book from Netgalley for my honest opinion.

Annual 2013 carino, meglio l'holiday annual 2014. Le facce spesso sono disegnate in modo strano, ma ce le facciamo andare bene.

Review originally posted on The Book Adventures of Annelise Lestrange :)

I received this copy through NetGalley in exchange of an honest review. Let's go :D

The Story

The graphic novel has two stories based on previous movies from the franchise.

In the first one, Sunset interviews Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Applejack and Pink Pie to discover how they met and became friends. When remembering all that they went through together, the bond between the five girls gets stronger.

The second one is about the spirit of holidays. When Sunset tells Applejack that she never has a proper holiday time at home, the girls arrange their schedules for Sunset never to be alone during the date. However, as the girls open up with Sunset, their secrets start to pop up in their school. Now they have to decide whether they believe Sunset’s claims for innocence or not.

The Analysis

Just remembering that those were my experiences and opinion as a reader :)

I’ve been in love with My Little Pony for a long time now, but I confess that I never watched the cartoons – I only have this notebook from the picture and a toy, oops! Haha! So, when I saw the opportunity of reviewing this graphic novel at NetGalley, I jumped on it <3 Oh boy, I regret nothing! The draws were amazing and the stories were so cute! Definitely they are meant for teenies, but you are never old enough to like something, haha! I wish I had a physical copy of this, as it is awesome. A fun and fast read with lots of laughs: 5 stars!
The narrative wasn’t build on the mainstream style of graphic novels or comic books: on the first story, the girls share the narration with Sunset, that guides their story. On the second one, the narrator is almost completely absent, only marking passages of time. I liked that style, it worked very well for me <3

On plot matters, the first story is more interesting, as it is build on the girls’ memories, so you don’t know exactly what to expect until they become friends – or maybe you can if you watched all the cartoons, I don’t know, haha! I had a good experience with it and, as some parts were very predictable, others were very surprising. The second story had a more sophisticated plot, as there is a mystery to be solved. I had my theories, but I wasn’t sure until the end who had done it. Again, maybe I would know if I watched the cartoons, oops! :x

I like the girls a lot, they remind me of my personal group of friends (we also are five and the personalities have a big match, haha!). Rarity is my favorite and I think that’s who I would be if I was 10 and wanted to call deeds on a My Little Pony character (I guess I just did it with 21, but anyway). I think they all are fun and with the perfect touch of imperfectness, haha! Also, they show that the villains of the day can be people very close to you, so it is good to always keep an eye open.

Also, the illustrations were marvelous. Tony Fleecs and Andy Price rocked this as much as Ted Andersen and Katie Cook rocked the script /o/ A strong point of this graphic novel is that the illustrations were very colorful and alive, but the draws weren’t completely feminine, even that My Little Pony’s target is girls. The draw style is more relaxed and fluid, creating harmony with the vibrant colors. I just loved it!

Overall, I loved this and will love to get to know more about My Little Pony’s world!

That’s it, thanks for reading!

I would like to start this review by first stating that you cannot read this comic without first seeing the My Little Pony Equestria Girls Movie (s). The comic would otherwise make little sense, and as I read in another review, it will be annoying if you do watch the movies afterwards. With that out of the way...

I'm in love with My Little Pony, both tv series, movies, and comics, and this one was simply amazing into bringing to life even more stories of the Equestria Girls. In this edition we have two stories, one before the first Equestria Girls movie, and one after it. In the first story we have a backstory on how the girls met (minus Twilight Sparkle) and it gives a better understanding on how united they all were as friends. Plus I loved seeing the normal teen struggles we all face in High School while still trying to get to know ourselves and be true to that. And Pinkie Pie! I love her.

The second story is after the movie where we're able to see Sunset Shimmer trying to fit in as friends with the girls after her villainous attempts in the movie. While trying to show Sunset Shimmer the true meaning of friendship and l0ve, the girls plan a series of slumber parties in their respective houses, but things go from great to horribly bad when secrets and pictures from the parties are shared on a page similar to our Facebook. And everyone is blamming Sunset Shimmer for it. The comic presents many teachings on friendship, trust, family, and everyday struggles that stays true to what My Little Pony shows.

As for the art, each page was vibrant with colors and new settings that had me in awe with all I saw. Loved, loved, loved it <3

My Little Pony Equestria Girls features two stories at roughly 88 pages. The book ties in to the movie/TV series: Sunset Shimmer begins as an antagonist but by the middle is regretting sabotaging and manipulating the EQ girls. Of course, her mean past may not be so easy to forget by the other EQ girls.

The first story is told in the form of an interview: the Equestria Girls tell how they came to be together and the hard first days at Canterlot. From Apple Jack not fitting in, Rainbow Dash being overconfident, Fluttershy ignored, Rarity getting caught up in popularity, and Pinky Pie trying to figure out how best to make people happy. The second story centers around Sunset Shimmer - the EQ girls bring her into their fold for two slumber parties. But when their secrets get out on the "My Stable" webpage, everyone fears that Sunset Shimmer is up to her old tricks. It's up to Sunset to find out the real culprit behind the secret-leaks - with the help of her journal connecting to Twilight Sparkle.

The graphics are good, colorful, and true to the character. There are cute moments: Fluttershy going apocalyptic on a video game, Pinkie Pie jumping out of a tree and terrifying Apple Jack, mean girls giving Apple Jack crazy 'makeovers', and Apple Bloom revealing Apple Jack's nickname piggly wiggly.

Of course, kids who love the ponies or EQ will enjoy this graphic novel. It's easy to follow, continues the Friendship is Magic theme, and the EQ girls (and Twilight Pony) look like they do in the movie. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

This comic follows the alternate human version of the Ponies we're familiar with that were introduced in the Equestria Girls film. There isn't magic in this world, but they know of the ponies and Sunset Shimmer is still finding her place in this human world.

The first story in the trade paperback shows how the girls originally met in this alternate world. It was during the Freshman Fair. AppleJack, or AJ as she is known here, is new to the school and doesn't quite fit in. I liked the way these girls' personalities mirror those of their pony counterparts. The art of them as humans instead of ponies is awkward at times, but overall I like the concept.

The second half shows the girls during the holidays, on a slumber party binge. We are introduced to MyStable, the social media of this world. I love the references like this to pop culture that make their way into these comic books.

This is another good entry in the MLPFIM comic book series. Like the ones before it, it's a great introduction to comics for young fans of the tv series. I give this graphic novel a 3/5. It's a great story of friends and family.

Thanks to my daughter I've seen all three OAVs of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Equestria Girls at LOT. I don't mind, I'm a cartoon geek and I'll watch anything, no matter the target audience. Like Star Wars, I think the second one is the best. It has catchy music and pretty witty writing. This trade appears to be half prequel to the first OAV and half sequel to the first OAV. It's not bad, but I think it suffers from not having the witty writing of the second OAV. I think the amazing voice actors also really bring something to the cartoons that are missing in this book. Also, I think the art style works better when animated than with static characters.

Still, I go by the mouse-over text when I choose my ratings on Goodreads. Two stars is marked at "it's OK". That's what I thought. It didn't suck, but it didn't have the same enjoyable quality that made me not mind when my daughter was watching the related cartoons. (Something I can't always say of cartoons specifically directed at kids) So I'd probably pass on this one unless you just can't get enough of MLP:FIM:EG

When I was a kid, I just loved My Little Pony. I think it might have been my first obsession. So, I was pleased when they brought them back to live with Friendship is Magic, and although it didn't reach the levels of fun for me I had when I was younger it was always a trip down memory lane and very enjoyable.

I was very surprised, if not shocked, to find out that in this comic, apparently based on a movie, they are no longer ponies but girls going to high school. I was completely unprepared for this change and therefore it took a large portion of the comic for me to get used to the idea.

The story and the message are not unlike those seen in Friendship is Magic, but still I didn't enjoy this comic as much as the others. I think I like them best when they are just ponies.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I loved the artwork! However, I was a tad confused between story arcs. I've never seen or read about the Equestria girls before so perhaps that is needed first, but the first story seemed like Sunset was slightly evil and then in the next story she's best friends with the ponies and Twilight is still a pony in Ponyville. But other than that confusion, it was a fun read and absolutely gorgeous artwork to admire. Maybe the next in the series will add even more to the story and I'll get a better understanding of it.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

While I love the MLP:FiM cartoons... I just can't deal with seeing them as girls and not ponies. It just feels wrong.

I thought I could, but I can't. :(

The artwork was a little up and down, and it wasn't a good value ($17 for about 100 pages vs. $22 for 300 pages of MLP Omnibus). The first story was 3 stars, about how the gang became friends at the start of freshman class. The second story was much better, about a slumber party. Although it's from Holiday Special 2014, it has so little to do about the holidays that it can be read at any time of year.
