Despite the comicwow.com quote on the back, I can actually find a lot not to like about this.
"The storyline is interesting, the artwork is fun, and it's a video game, too! What's not to like?" Actually, there is SO MUCH going on that it's hard to follow. A problem I had with the Skylanders in general was the whole point was to sell the toys-as-dongles, so there are SO MANY characters, and ALL OF THEM should get something approaching equal screen time so each player can maybe see their favourite doing something.
This collection also STARTS with three four-page shorts, and only the third ties into the "main" storyline (or, at least, the subsequent storyline, which is then followed by a completely different storyline). If I were at least a fan and familiar with the characters, then that might be a different story, but it's not terribly approachable for newcomers (even this one, who is vaguely familiar with the dongles-as-toys from having bought a couple that looked cool but didn't learn about them).
The artwork is kind of fun, I guess, but it's also VERY BUSY in a lot of places, because... CANDY. It's as though almost every single individual piece of candy was hand-drawn. Yikes!
And it is, in fact, a video game.
Well, I think Skylanders fans would like this, but newcomers have a slight bit of heavy-lifting to do to get into the story. Mostly, telling who's a "good" guy vs. a "bad" guy (they all look sort of samey).
