«After all, weren't we... just friend?»
Romance is never easy. Missed signals, passive aggression, and ego all threaten to get in the way of any budding relationship, and it's no different for Ally and Lisa. Best friends. Roommates. BFSB practitioners.

Still, Ally and Lisa's romance is built on more fantasies than one—including the infamous lie of "friends with benefits". When a figure from Lisa's erotic tales finds real life representations in new friend Anne, are a few missed signals more stress than this fantasy romance can stand?

From critically acclaimed writer/artist Stjepan Šejić (Switch, Death Vigil), comes this fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling saga of love, bad jokes, and, of course, bondage.

This proves a comic can be a heart-wrenching drama. The art work is absolutely fantastic. So much emotion conveyed and so cleverly done. Bravo. Now where are the tissues?...no, not for that. Get your head out of the gutter. It's not like there's some erotic scene on the cover of this thing...oh, wait.

Though I enjoyed reading the first three volumes, I stopped reading this series until I saw it at the library yesterday in a large hardback format (both volumes 4 and 5) that highlights the real strength of the series, Sejic’s art, which is stunning. This is, bewarned or invited, a bdsm series, f/f, focusing on the friendship-moving-into-love? (though certainly sex), but the subject is very lightly explored, I think, with all thin, attractive people, with much more talk than actual sex depiction. It's a romance with a side of fetish. Modest, in many ways, as in: Oh, are you curious about this kink? Welcome! Don't be nervous, these are nice, nerdy people, no one gets hurt, and so on. Relax, scaredy cat!

Lisa and Ally proceed with their relationship, but invite another friend into the mix, Anne.

It's been more than 2 years since I last looked in on Sunstone. Since I read the previous volume. Reading my review for that volume, the third in the series, I remind myself that this volume here, the fourth, isn't the first volume I read for the first time in graphic novel form. But before I go down confusing lane, I'll just be blunter than norm: I read the first two volumes of this series as thy were created and posted on Devientart. Had access to more, but didn't read volume three until it popped up as a graphic novel. That one, volume 3, and volume 4 (this volume), were 'new reads' for me. Though I'd only read this one this morning - for the first time.

There's a personal reason why I stopped reading the series, and no it isn't the part where I originally thought the author was female only to be shocked to find that the author was a man (though that did happen - the having thought woman, finding out man); no it's the personal connection with my own life. Ironic, considering what happens in this volume and in volume 5 - the story that ends this volume and is picked up in volume 5 (which I'm reading even as I write this review here for volume 4. That personal connection is the part wherein, out of everything I've ever read, all those romances, and non-romances, the characters I most identified were the ones in this series here - for reasons. Specifically, I'll have to note otherwise this paragraph doesn't serve it's purpose, the two main people in the story-line - Ally and Lisa. They corresponded in weird ways to myself and someone else in my life. Who poofed on me. Which is the whole point of this paragraph - I'd seen this series with strings connecting it to my own life, but the connection was broken by that person 'poofing' on me, so . . . it was hard to get back to read more parts of this specific story here.

I rather assumed, based on the above and other stuff, that I'd probably end up rating this something nearish 4 (if that) stars. Because, hey, part of my enjoyment of the series was the part where it seemed oddly connected to my own life . . . and that was gone now, so..... But no, the humor wore down my walls, the plot and stuff broke the wall around my . . . um . . . something, emotions? And I rather enjoyed the story.

Bah, I'm not really saying anything about the book. Stuff happened, miscommunications occurred, flashbacks upon flashbacks occurred (the whole series is Lisa telling the reader the story from some point in the future - and occasionally things will/would appear out of chronological order, because the present for narrator Lisa isn't the present for story Lisa; plus there were many occasions when stuff was told that didn't actually happen, or, I should say, happened in stories, but the reader only learned that after the fact. I've lost this paragraph and this review.

This is the fourth volume in a five part story arc about the same couple, Lisa and Ally :) and at this point there is no new way for me to tell you what this series is all about and at the same time not spoiling you some stuff… so excuse the repeat ;) we continue the story of my favourite couple of sexual nerds, when they navigate the situation they put themselves into… as in, what to do when you agree to be friends with benefits but start to develop feelings for the other person… it does end on a particularly painful cliffhanger, but fortunately I already had the next installment on my shelf, so it didn’t hit me all that hard ;) I am absolutely in love with this whole series, the art style is phenomenal, the story is amazing, the characters are complex and interesting… honestly, I could go on and on and on with all the best adjectives and I feel it still wouldn’t have been enough… just… if you have any doubts about picking up this series, put them aside and give it a try ;) when I got that recommendation from some of my friends I was hesitant at first as well, because I wasn’t sure what to expect about a BDSM themed FF romance… and yes, it is sexy as fuck, but it’s also cute and adorable and hilarious and I just love it with all my heart :) go read it :)

XOXO

WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS GRAPHIC SEXUAL DISCUSSION AND STRONG LANGUAGE. IF THAT MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE DON’T READ THIS BOOK OR MY REVIEW FOR IT!

Fuck...
I just... holy fuck!

What’s it about?
Uh... people who have read the previous volumes know and I don’t wanna spoil this for anyone, SKIP!

Why it gets 5 stars:
The story is wonderful! I didn’t think I’d be THIS into a comic about 2 women who are into BDSM and their friendship... well not for the plot anyway but damn, I 100% am!
The art is absolutely fucking beautiful! Sejic’s art is stunning and makes every page a masterpiece!
The characters are really interesting and very well written. Ally and Lisa are my favorite comic book (hell, maybe even all literature) couple of all time now. Yes, I know there’s several iconic superhero couples, this couple dominates over all of them (fitting, ain’t it?)
The pacing is perfect for the story. It’s super intense when it’s time for the sexy stuff it’s intense as hell but when it’s plot-focused it doesn’t feel like “okay, move on, more lesbian bondage please” which is try to emphasize: THIS SERIES IS NOT PORN. Yes, it is erotic and has more graphic sexual content than pretty much any other big 3 comic I’ve read (yes, even Saga and Sex Criminals) but it’s not just that.
This book has some humorous parts and it just makes everything so much sweeter.
This book celebrates nerdy stuff and makes a few references but in a nice way. It’s not one of those books where the whole goddamn plot is “THEY LIKE NERD SHIT, HERE’S A REFERENCE, THIS IS SOOO QUIRKY”, it’s actually fun and doesn’t fuck with the book’s quality, I love that.
The romance is so good. Both sweet and sexy! It’s also interesting and different from what readers already have seen in most romance books.
So I already went over this a bit but while it’s not porn... it is still sexy as fuck! Seriously this is the sexiest comic I’ve ever read. My favorite sexy scene was definitely
description
So this may also be the most emotional comic I’ve ever read. I don’t think I’ve ever cried over a scene in a comic book... until now.
This book is fairly unpredictable.
There’s a few (non-sexual, don’t worry) scenes with a cute little cat (it’s name is Bonkers)! I love it so much.
The ending is so damn good. Like yeah it made me cry but it’s so beautiful and has a spark of hope that makes it so good.

Overall:
Okay... how in the actual fuck does a comic about a fetish manage to be the most emotional comic I’ve read?
This comic is so good. Who would have thought that a comic about BDSM would be a beautiful piece of storytelling with amazing art in every page, good pacing, outstanding characters and fun humor.
Sex is meant to be emotional and Sejic doesn’t forget that. Yes it is full of graphic sex and nudity that most comics, even mature rated ones wouldn’t include, and yes much of it is quite hot... but above all it is emotional as is this masterpiece comic that is becoming one of my favorites of all time.
Highly recommended!

The best volume so far! I'm happy to report it was much more coherent, the plot made sense, the structure was good. It was also the sexiest yet, and luckily, the guys, when deployed, didn't disturb me this time.

I have a problem with the "period means a whole week of no sex" equation, because the characters are not shown to be in particular pain or discomfort, just... it seems more or less assumed that they are grossed out by "running the red light" as it's described. And for the whole seven days. Sadly, that, to me, reads as catering to presumed male / period-phobic readership.

On the other hand, the process of falling in love and the misconceptions and crossed signals was depicted convincingly and kindly. I really liked the characters this time, quite a lot, and I'm actually looking forward to the next volume for the first time.

The fourth volume in the Sunstone series is pretty much entirely about building up the drama in the relationship between Lisa and Ally in preparation for a 5th volume that will (presumably) resolve all the tension. As with the previous books, I absolutely adored the artwork and the way the author portrayed the characters. I especially enjoyed the changes in the thought / speech bubbles based on the emotions that were being expressed. There even were some scenes that I actually laughed out loud to. Stjepan just has this spectacular way of drawing you in and making you feel like you can truly relate to the characters and their emotions.

Unfortunately, despite the above points, I largely felt bummed throughout this book. I know many people are into the angst and the fights but that's just not me. I was more hoping for what I imagine the 5th volume will be like - a resolution where Lisa and Ally finally admit their feelings for each other and talk about their problems. Instead, I got a book that just kept getting more and more depressing.

Aside from that, I also was irked by the fact that the story bounced between "reality" and "fiction" in confusing ways. There were entire scenes that I was like, "woah I can't believe this is happening" - but they didn't *actually* happen. They were just depictions of a story or a thought and I felt like they brought down the underlying narrative. Maybe I'm just missing some key transition or dialogue or something, though.

With all that being said, though, I still liked this volume. While it was definitely not my favorite, it did have some truly good parts to it. If you liked the previous books in this series and are ok with the drama - you will more than likely love this one. Even if you aren't into the angst like me, I'd still recommend it due to the gorgeous artwork and the beautiful way the author can make you feel connected to the characters.

PS: I'm sad that the end of this volume doesn't have any notes from the author or any of his random doodles. I always looked forward to that part because it made me feel much more connected to both the author and the story that was being told. As it stands, I felt like I got jolted out of the "bdsm space" without having any of the good cuddles at the end. :(

The next volume and the girls are living together… but a lot of things could have gone better if they had FUCKING talked.

This one took me a long time to read. I kept going to Twitter, drinking my beer, reading some more Twitter, going to Animal Crossing on my Switch, checking out Pokemon Go. I just couldn’t focus on this one. Too much dialogue/text. Too much frustrations that these two adult women wouldn’t fucking talk.

OH GOOD LORD Girls, the we are just friends stuff got on my nerves. TALK ABOUT YOUR FUCKING FEELINGS. A lot of these things that was being discussed, all the worries, if they just had fucking talked from the start. Seen where they are at. What they both wanted. Did they want a relationship? Did they not? How much is their level of love for each other? Did they think it was possible to be together? Etc. Come on girls, you are both adults, FUCKING TALK. Stop being jealous and actually talk.

Sorry girl, I understand you want to please your best buddy Anne, but I was seriously not happy that you wrote the story so she and Ally would be doing the sex and calling her Sarah and all that. I could only imagine how it was for Ally (and later we do find out). Lisa, come on, even you are not so stupid. Just write a prequel or a spinoff featuring Anne. Without Ally in it. Done. It just made me feel very uncomfortable and I just wanted to hug Ally.

Also so much talking. While I was definitely happy with some of the dialogue/text (like where we learn more about Allison, or saw the girls’ thoughts and knew that both were in love territory), often it was just too much. I wanted some more sexy BDSM times.

Plus, it got really confusing for me with the Anne x Ally parts in between. I had to keep myself focused and tell myself that Ally wasn’t cheating (not that I would ever see her do that but it was just so confusing to see those parts pop up).

I did love the sexy times between our girls, I loved that they started to live together, I loved getting more on Allison’s past and how she got to be where she is now and how she got to discovering all the awesome BDSM stuff, I loved seeing Allison get in her Dom mode, I loved Allison and gaming (she looks hot and is so awesome), I loved seeing Lisa find her passion in her writing, I loved that Lisa went for a tattoo and got nipple piercings (though ouch and never for me), I loved the art, I loved seeing other friends of Lisa/Allison, I laughed when Anne, Lisa, Allison got drunk and kept bothering their friend who just having sex with her husband. 😛 I had a laugh and a shiver (as ducttape ouch) as they covered Lisa nips with bottle caps and ducttape. There was a lot of good yes, but sadly… the other things just made me unhappy. The ending just pissed me off. This could all just have been fucking prevented. TALK TALK TALK.

This is a one masterpiece. Being a comic reader i think that this is probably by far, the best, deepest, sexiest and most relatable comic i have ever read. It's seldom that i was ever taught many things by a book. But this is just beautiful. The art work done by Stjepan is quite impressive. I can't wait for chapter 5. I am absolutely addicted.

My favourite volume of ‘Sunstone’ yet. The art is still out of this world gorgeous, the pin-up style so perfect and sexy, and the characters believable, adorable, lovable dorks. I loved the way in which Ally and Lisa’s relationship developed over the course of this book, and the ways in which it becomes complicated by BDSM.

I just love this series so much, it’s so heartwarming and well done.

Another good read

The artistry in this series is up there as some of the best I've seen. This volume was more angst filled than I'd hope for but I'm optimistic it's leading to some awesomesauce in the next volume.

Šejići tleskám ti ve stoje, tohle bylo top. Příběhový vývoj je dechberoucí na to kolik to má stránek i textu, řekl bych že jde snad o nejsvižnější volume.

This is such a good series and with every Volume I find myself addicted more and more and rooting for Lisa and Allie even more. I really feel like this volume switches thing up a bit becuase although the writing and art are as quality as can be, the storyline introduces a new character, Anne, who becomes part of the group dynamic, causing friction.
This is honestly the first volume where I was a little worried about my favourite couple, and I though maybe things would start to turn sour... plus we're left on a pretty big moment of 'WHAT COMES NEXT?' and I am so sad we're going to have to wait for a while to see (as this just came out) but equally happy that it will no doubt be just as wonderful.

This follows Ally and Lisa as they discover the world of BDSM carefully and lovingly together. It's cute, funny and filled with sexy-time, but it's all done tastefully and even the most explicit poses require the story build-up, which Stjepan Sejic does really well.

What I most enjoy about this series is that it has a lot of writing within the storyline and I think it needs it to make it feel genuine. We feel so connected to our main characters by this point of the story becuase of how much we've seen of them and the way that they feel and develop together. I have to say it's not a relationship that I would think is for everyone, but if you have any interest in learning the 'reality' of BDSM rather than a porn portrayal, then you need to try this out.

On the whole another wonderful addition to the series and I will no doubt be eagerly awaiting the next volume! 5*s :)

"Ally told me one of the last things she thought before entering was: maybe this night could be saved! Maybe it could have, I often wonder what would have changed. But... as sad as writing about this makes me... I have no regrets. Because as I said, without the tears and the pain of that night, without the feeling of loss, there would be no smiles later on, this was our low point".

Magnifico, maestoso, emozionante.

Three instead of four just because of the down note on the cliffhangery ending of this volume. Just as good as the rest of the volumes up to this point, but the strain of being FWBs begins to weigh on Ally and Lisa, and cracks form. The art is still gorgeous and the story engaging - it's hard to watch their bubble pop(mostly in the person of Anne, who is a great character) and equally hard to watch them fail. Read this one so you can get to volume 5.

More wholesomeness. Less porn.

Well this picked up really great! As the relationship moves along the problems move along as well. Specially with this 'we're just friends' thing they keep trying to pull off. It's great seeing the tension building up, and this is also one of the longest books so there was time to develop the peak of the story.

I first saw Stjepan's work on Facebook and since then I just can't get enough of his art. It has all the elements I love in a comic: breathtaking aesthetics, interesting storyline, gradual character development, humorous personality, and page-turner content. I love how he can make every expressions with a smirk.

I forgot I got the FREE copy from one of his sites. (Thanks, dude)

I don't really read romance comics but it would be hard to imagine there is a better one out there than Sunstone. While the content is explicit the on page sexual content consistently seems earned and the art continues to be staggeringly good.

You're gonna make me cry here...

I've been enjoying the flirty fun of Lisa & Ally, but this one was a knife in the gut, especially the loneliness of that last page pulling back. But the promise of a happy future is still there, so I'm gonna see this through to the end.
