Cooper Lang has all he needs in life—his ranch, his motorcycle shop and female companionship whenever he wants it. So when Kendra Mattingly reappears one hot summer day and knees him in the groin for kissing her, he knows he should stay clear but being one of the Bad Boys of Dry River also means accepting dangerous challenges and this obstinate beauty is definitely too much to resist.

Kendra has been in love with Cooper since her teens but after he rejected her, she settled for a loveless marriage, which she eventually escaped. Now her chance with Cooper has finally arrived yet she can’t help but feel he doesn’t desire the same things in life.

Upfront about his feelings regarding marriage and kids, Kendra ends things because she’s always wanted marriage and a family. When her past threatens her safety, Cooper wonders if he’s made a huge mistake.

Cooper might be my new favorite cowboy of Susan's. I can't ever put any of her books down and read this one in a few hours over the weekend. They pull you in and don't let you go until the story is finished. I liked Kendra and Cooper and thought they were perfect for each other.

I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the rest of this series. Cooper is the quintessential cowboy and Kendra is a delectably feisty heroine. Sparks certainly fly between these two and I loved the dynamics of their relationship. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read that will have you cheering, gasping and shock and falling in love along with the characters.

I'd rate this 3.5 stars but rounded it up to 4 because it kept my attention and I liked it even though some parts could have been done better. This was an easy, albeit predictable, read. Cooper and his friends were known as hell-raisers in their youth, causing chaos across their small town. We don't get too many details about this, but are told that Cooper still hasn't settled down, preferring to play the field and keep his options open. His mother treated him terribly as a child, resulting in his father throwing her out and raising him as a single father. Consequently, he has trust issues and no desire to settle down and start anything permanent. He owns and runs a ranch as well as a motorbike shop and is pretty happy with his life. In comes Kendra, shaking up his life as he knows it. She's been out of town for a few years, getting married to a controlling man who she eventually runs away from after getting rescued from him by her Dad. She had a massive crush on Cooper as a teenager and he wasn't interested in her, causing Kendra to be ornery towards him. They can't deny their attraction, however, and start a relationship.

The overarching theme of this book is Kendra's former husband and Cooper's unwillingness to commit to anything more serious. Kendra's mother sent her a box of her things from when she was younger. In them was her diary and other mementos in which she had jotted down her infatuation and love with Cooper. Her husband of the time saw them and after becoming extremely jealous, resorted to keeping her a prisoner in her own home as he couldn't handle his wife caring for someone else. When she gets away from him, he sends his right hand man to watch her while he waits for an opportunity to bring her back to him. This part of the plot probably caused the biggest problem for me. I get the jealousy, but for her ex to be so hung up on a bunch of high school memories and react so extremely (not to mention illegally) and out of the blue was a little hard to swallow. While it created the necessary drama throughout the book, the fact that it was so over the top took some of the shine off it. Why didn't she go to the police? Where did this behaviour come from? He had had secret affairs, but the ex's main issue was that Kendra had been in love with someone else as a youth?

The fact that Kendra had been in love with someone else, namely Cooper, since childhood was brought up a lot, making some of the story a bit repetitive. When I read that Kendra hadn't really loved her husband and had only married him because she thought she would never get to be with Cooper had me thinking a bit poorly towards her as well. Sorry, but this makes you a bit of a terrible person and while the ex was over the top, this type of behaviour doesn't endear you to me either as it's a pretty rotten thing to do to someone else.

The fact that Cooper had broken Kendra's heart was brought up quite a lot, too. It was built up a lot and I found it to be a bit of a non-event. What teenager hasn't had a crush on an older guy that wasn't interested in her? To still be in love with him years later is a bit of stretch. There were also a few other issues with the story that had me scratching my head. Kendra's ex sent his right hand man to watch her but she didn't know him and therefore didn't recognise him. If this guy was so entrenched in the husband's life, surely she would have seen him before. Kendra also became a bit whiny and started asking Cooper the hard questions after they'd only just started seeing each other. I'm talking marriage, kids and where their relationship was headed. Honestly, this would send most people, both men and women, running for the hills so for her to carry on about this was annoying. If he doesn't want what you want, grow up and move on instead of carrying on.

I also had a bit of a problem with the ending. Without spoiling anything, it was over the top and really rushed. The FBI was involved and able to rush in and save the day on short notice after a phone call. This would happen never and was completely ridiculous. Everything is then tied up neatly in a bow and I would have liked a bit more. There was also a fair amount of cheese at the end but for those that like things over the top, this won't worry you. Just as a side note as well, the author has crazy use of commas. They were all over the place and in the wrong spot at times, affecting the reading experience.

We're given a few teasers for another potential relationship in the series. I'd rather the author focus on the couple in question rather than lay the ground work for future books, but that's just a personal preference. It was an entertaining read with very few surprises. It was repetitive at times and over the top in key plot points but I still enjoyed it. I loved that the cowboy aspect was laid on thick without being too much. The author did a great job in adding some country charm to Cooper's character that had me swooning a bit. I was lucky enough to grab this book when it was free. If I'd paid the $2.99 it's now advertised as, I probably would have given it three stars. I'd read other books in the series for the right price.

Great books

I love the story lines. I would like to read them without the graphic sex. I wish there was copies without all the sex. My imagination can figure out that. 😂

I love the bad boys of Dry River, they keep getting better and better in every book. Cooper is a sexy as sin reformed bad boy who doesn't want to settle down but he can't stop thinking about Kendra who he hurt when they were younger. I love when Cooper realizes how grown up and beautiful Kendra is and how screwed he is when he wants more than a few nights together. I love his character from the start, he's hard working, fun and sexy but also a badass and loving all in one. Kendra is sweet and caring and totally still in love with Cooper no matter how hurt she was when they were kids and he turned her down, I love how much she wants it to work with him but also knows she wants more out of life then sex.

These two characters are great together, they are fun and sexy as hell. I love how all the bad boys make a appearance and can't wait for their stories. Susan kicks ass in writing sexy as hell scenes and creating these badass guys who are big softies at heart. Another amazing story by Susan, I can't wait for more. Loved this one! 5 stars

If you like stories about cowboys and feisty women, this book is for you.

Kendra has been in love with Cooper since she was a teenager, he knew this and shut her down. Now as adults, she is still angry at him and can't seem to let it go. He realizes he likes her sharp wit and begins to pursue her. She doesn't make it easy for him. I love second chance stories where once the individuals get involved there isn't any more miscommunication, they say what they mean. I especially love when Cooper tries to embarrass her with his naughty talk!

Maximum romance

I loved this book so much. I loved the playfulness between cooper and kendra. I love how Susan included just enough suspense to make the love between these two stronger. The live scenes were so romantic and sometimes so hot that I just couldn't put the book down. I can not wait to start the next book in the series, Lincoln. I am sure it will be equally exciting!!!
