Lot of exciting memories about the Dark Knight!

This is the second book, in a series of three, each focusing on Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman respectively

HOLY GREAT BOOK, BATMAN!

This “Little Book of” isn’t as little as you may think. Certainly it’s small (in the sense that it’s 5” x 7”) BUT it’s 192 pages long! Where you can appreciate the impact of Batman, inside and outside the comic books, through a visual-and-text journey.

This an European-licensed product which begins with a prose introduction “Why we love Batman?” presented in three languages: Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

After that, you start an unstoppable tour, divides per ages (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Dark and Modern) about many of the main highlights in comic books but also its media appearances in TV and Films, both live-action and animated, but even some of his use in an unauthorized Philippine Batman movie.

Also, you don’t get only Batman, but also fair coverage of his “family” like Robin, Batgirl (different versions of her) , Commisioner Gordon, Alfred, Bat-Mite (yep, him too!), along with his colorful Rogue Gallery.

Between his comic books moments like The Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Hush, A Death in the Family, The Killing Joke, etc…, you watch many of his other media appearances like the old Movie Serials, the Batman Animated, Adam West’s Batman, Michael Keaton’s saga, Christian Bale’s Dark Knight trilogy, etc…

Obviously, with characters like Batman, even in 192 pages, you can’t cover everything, like his other product positioning in radio and comic strips, but honestly due its cheap price, you can’t ask of something as good as what you get here.

More of a little book of curiosities than a pocket-sized encyclopedia. It's divided in chapters that represent different eras of the character in comics and in popular culture. Inside those chapters the chronology however is mixed which seems a bit odd. On one page you might have a cover of an issue and a couple of pages further another that is actually many years older. The whole lay-out makes it almost feel like 'oh this is cool, let's put it here, and that one over there because it looks nicer'. This partly nonsensical structure is however somewhat explained with the book being based on material from different era-by-era volumes. It's also pretty obviously more of a gift item than anything else. On the bright side it does feature a lot of goofy trivia that might be new to even a life-time Batman aficionado.

These little books are superb value, they manage to pack a huge amount of information into a very limited page count.
There’s no fat here at all, every space on every page has either informational text, quotes, or covers and interior art.
The eras of Batman are broken down into sections, and everything chosen is perfect.
As with all Taschen books, the design and layout is excellent too.

This was a fun little art book that deals with the subject of the Caped Crusader with just enough irony and nostalgia.

This is a lovely little flip book, but not much more. It had less text and information than I would have liked, no more than the occasion snippet of information that I'm not even sure could be called "trivia" in its randomness and oftentimes unrelated character to each other. The items that were chosen to be displayed don't seem to have much of a consistency or any particular over-arching narrative. It is a beautiful book and a nice gift to anyone who loves Batman, but it is definitely NOT a "definitive guide" to the caped crusader nor does it "look[s] at the complicated personality and the dynamic relationships that defined" him.

As noted in the end of the book, this one "is based on the material" from its coffee table parent "75 years of DC comics" which would definitely be the one to go to for a discerning and well established fan of DC Comics in general; being a minor one, I am quite happy with this fleeting yet informative insight into the history of Batman, which still manages to bring up a lot of useful trivia and serve as a trove of colourful snapshots from collectors' archives us mortals will never be able to see in real.
