Roxanne was expecting a standard babysitting gig, no matter what crazy homeless Edgar tried to tell her. But this is Narrowdale, and nothing’s ever quite normal. When two of the kids she is looking after disappear, things quickly spiral out of control. Now Roxanne's crawling around in old maintenance tunnels, catching glimpses of creepy happenings in the building's many apartments. In one of them lives a man with a dark, terrible secret, and Roxanne's path is on a collision course with his. And all around the man, there is a strange sound of buzzing…
My name is Michael Omer, and I’m a writer, journalist and game designer. I wrote and published my first novel when I was sixteen, and figured I’d keep at it. Since then, I have published two more novels, and wrote… who can even count how many? I’m happily married to a woman who keeps pushing me to write more, and have three kids who insist I should stop writing and come play with them. I also have two dogs.
Very creepy and thrilling, hopefully Roxanne is a big character in the future Narrowdale books too. I want these to somehow intertwine into the main Narrowdale story
This was an interesting story, though a strange one. I personally don't like this type of story but if someone likes this kind of story they would be very satisfied with this story, by the way ,what happened to the China doll?
As short as this is, it is absolutely the most riveting and terrifying of Omer's stories. I've now read everything he's published and I think he might have missed his true calling after this one. Luckily it's a quick read because I couldn't stop until I was totally done with it. Very unsettling as Omer does a great job of detailing out the environments and experiences so you can see and feel it for yourself. Not something you should probably read before bed.
Although set in the same place as the first two books in this series, this short story is more of a scary camp fire story in written form. Two of the original characters make an appearance though.
I've read the two paranormal novels of the Narrowdale Mystery series. This novella contains some different characters who are plagued with the mysteries in this small town. Roxanne is an experienced babysitter, very trustworthy. But on this job of watching some young children in an upper floor apartment, the children disappear and she concludes that they were playing hide and seek in an open maintenance area as she finds the access duck in the floor. Rather than calling the parents or police, she enters the dark paths under the apartments. It gets very creepy. Will she become lost as well as the children? This is definitely a very chilling story. It reminds me of some Edgar Allan Poe stories which scared me when I was a young reader. If you think you'd like to read this to your kids or at a camp out, be sure they can handle this entertaining story. Turn the coffee pot on. You may have to stay awake all night in fear of cockroaches!
